V-Disc Big Band Set Is Coming!!!
Stompin at the Savoy replied to JSngry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Well, my copy arrived today and I got it all ripped to lossless files and listened to the Basie stuff, which is about an hour and 22 minutes, and the Lionel Hampton section, which is 30 minutes. I have nothing to compare besides public domain sources on the internet but the sound does seem quite excellent here. The content is, as you know, splendid. -
It's in Esperanto.
-
I have a copy of the massive History of European Jazz book on the way and am eager to look for further discussion of the artists featured on SJ 18 (which has superb annotations in and of itself). Thinking about brewing up a Night Lights episode devoted to this release. Current listening--this early-1960s end-of-a-love-affair concept album, the last of Nat King Cole's four collaborations with arranger Gordon Jenkins:

That is a superlative entry in the series!

Too bad it can't be recorded...

So glad that set made it into existence. Right now—such a great entry in a great series:

The Box Set Hobby
Stompin at the Savoy replied to Stompin at the Savoy's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I grew up with bound 78 albums around the house but I haven't been counting those as box sets. -
I'm having a talk with Jesus.
-
What were the earliest jazz box sets? Should we count albums of 78s? (I don't think we had any jazz ones but lots of others in my house growing up.)
-
This again: Norman Simmons Quartet - Ramira the Dancer (Spotlite, 1977) with Lisle Atkinson (b), Al Harewood (d), and Ralph Dorsey (perc)

Awesome, and a great idea. I'm a little bit out of the loop as far as jazz journalism these days and a lot depends on what I figure out for my next book projects (I have some ideas at least). There is one project already semi-in-the-works but details are a bit embargoed. Anyway, the next interview I do I'll be sure to inform people of in this space.

I know that there are other jazz journalists and broadcasters here. I talked to to bassist Harvie S last week for publication in the April issue of The New York City Jazz Record. This afternoon I talked to the founder of the Turtle Island Quartet, violinist/composer David Balakrishnan. This interview will be edited for broadcast on my Timeless Jazz show, likely to air on February 15th, prior to the band's February 24th concert here. Both Zoom chats were lots of fun!

What rock music are you listening to? Non-Jazz, Non-Classical.

Re. 12, Guy Klucevsek comes to mind as an accordion player with some classical overlap, but I've no idea whether he's included. I'm enjoying listening to this BFT so far, but expect not to have any IDs or even decent guesses.

Now playing The Bill Evans Trio “Haunted Heart: The Legendary Riverside Studio Recordings” Craft Recordings 3 cd set, disc 1 I love this set and think that the sonics are top-notch.
