To me the Plugged Nickel sessions operate on a number of levels. On the one hand this is a band playing mostly some standards. You can just enjoy the performances as such. From another point of view there is a sort of meta message: a commentary on the playing of standards. This way of playing a standard is different from before. Previously the time might change once, into double time or something like that, and back again. Here tempo and time change suddenly at will. Instead of theme, solos, restatement of theme in five minutes, the pieces wander around and stretch boundaries for 15 or 20 minutes. This is already exploding the way that standards were mostly played at the time. Now some inexperienced listeners will take the whole thing as it comes to them and enjoy the performance without any awareness of how this is a development in the genre and I have no quibble with that. Others are aware of groundbreaking aspects of the performances in the context of the development of jazz. Just as a young person might read something that satirizes another piece of literature and only see the surface story, others who are familiar with what is being satirized might see deeper meanings and humor.

Amanda Brecker became a singer herself, although I've never heard any of her music.

I couldn't, although I know what is. I think of much jazz in the same way, rather often. You need a special attitude in your listening, depends on your mood as well as listening experience.

Thanks for the reminder. Very good for a Sunday morning. Always nice to hear Heath and Kay with somebdy else.

A cold morning. Quiet as a tomb. Memphis is not feeling up to the day yet. I got enough sleep and can’t shut my brain off so I’m up. Pulled this up from the shelves, bought long ago and neglexted. Michael Brecker and Eliane Elias “Amanda” Denon cd

To this day, I have no real idea about this record and if the band gells, nothing (and no, I won't cheat and listen to it on Youtube).

I first heard the Japanese LP selections from this date relatively early in my jazz journey, but still after I was kind of familiar with Miles in general and this band in particular. I don't hear structure particularly well and it would never occur to me to make an effort to check their work to see if they had abandoned the form of Stella or not. Sure, I can hear that in some sense they are pushing things further than on My Funny Valentine or Four. I hear the energy and interaction and inventiveness and soul. To me this is raw and real in a way not even come close to again til the Lost Quintet. When I first heard it, I hadn't heard nearly as much by the Quintet's members as I have now, but I don't think that's changed my perception here much. I know the tunes a little better than I did then, but my enjoyment isn't much affected by how well I know any of them, which varies a good deal. I think assumptions about the accessibility of jazz performances based on 1950s pop paradigms are just weird. There are many ways to approach this music.

For decades, I played for a wedding band that was always "The Mister X Orchestra". Sometimes it was a five-piece orchestra, sometimes a sixteen-piece orchestra, anything in between, but it was always "orchestra". But there were never strings! Unless you count a fiddle player for honky-tonk numbers...

I burned what would have been Duke Ellington Masters of Jazz vol. 13 for myself. After playing vol. 1 to 12 I finish with vol. 13. Vol 14 and further are on the 2 Mosaic boxes and the big RCA box. For me no need to burn more CD's.
