My first exposure to Bird was through Phil Schaap and then I purchased the Yardbird Suite that I mentioned awhile ago. I then followed that with The Complete Dial Sessions on Jazz Classics (which was a very useful set), then a large Savoy and Dial set from one of the Spanish companies, which I sold when Savoy issued the Complete Savoy and Dial. Like you I have a lot of live stuff, plus the Mosaic and the 10cd Verve set and anything else that comes out that may be interesting. Stash put out some interesting CDs that I have.

Stumbled across this series of live recordings from Finnish Radio (the series is called Jazz-Liisa). It looks like there are 15 in the series, and the entire series is up on Bandcamp: https://jazzliisa.bandcamp.com/music All except #1 (Unisono Quartet) and #13 (Eero Koivistoinen) appear to be available on Apple Music (at least in Canada). Interestingly, I have one CD by Eero Koivistoinen (Wahoo), though I haven't pulled it out in a very long time. I'll try to track it down soon.

Yes, that’s a Select. The Keystones are sufficiently distinct from his earlier BNs that it doesn’t make sense to join them together in a regular Mosaic and if you take out the Keystones there’s not enough there.

Ha, yeah you might get the rest! Great call. Another album now on my radar.

12 is Clifford Thornton (the real one) from The Gardens of Harlem, tenor player is Roland Alexander. The cut is called "O Desayo." Bassist is Andy González. Guess I need to listen to the rest of it!

Good news, and glad to have you back. I owe you a call, just been swamped/under various rocks...

Gary Windo on track 12? I mistakenly named Shepp above when I meant Ayler, and I don't think it's him. But Windo plays a lot like Ayler.

Not particularly cheap but I’ve been using these for over a year and am happy with them. https://www.bose.com/c/earbuds/open?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Sitelink&utm_id=20465668972&utm_term=NA&utm_content=155356550311&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20465668972&gbraid=0AAAAAD3l1X1uK-LqzLYPXlIRLPr-5XCm6&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIuYXM4ZW3kwMVsXBHAR2rBACHEAAYASACEgIYBfD_BwE Not noise canceling so you are aware of your surroundings.

I just got a call from a white alto player, who leads one of the big bands play in, and occasionally write and arrange for. We've got a gig coming up, and he asks me to write an alto feature for him. He doesn't mention money, so I gave him the alto part to an old Strozier chart I wrote, and told him to practice it, cause it's too hard to sight read, as he proved when he tried to play it, and gave up after a number of bars. He owns an entire block in NYC, so I know he needs time to work on it... Of course, he forgot that he tried to play it already. So he calls me and tells me that it sounds too classical to him (?) I said Classical? What the hell sounds classical about it? Now, I had given it to another band, and because Strozier sounds bluesy, I wrote the word bluesy at the beginning. The white alto player, who is a great Phil Woods-type player, took the word too literally, and started growling and moaning at the end, marring what WAS a perfect performance. Unfortunately, the trumpet section added to my misery by ignoring the word "MUTE" and played OPEN, drowning out the poor alto player's stellar performance. I even yelled at them to put on their effing mutes, but they ignored me. After it was over. I asked them why they didn't use mutes. They said I didn't write MUTE, so I point to the word "MUTE" on the most annoying guy's part. He said, " you wrote it in the wrong place." I said, "that's where they put it in MuseScore" The guy says, "that's not the way it's supposed to be". I gave up. I took the trumpet parts home and wrote MUTE on each one. Then I took the 1st alto part out and wrote the name "Phil Woods' on it, because I know this guy never heard of FS. So the leader said to me on the phone, that's why I said it was a classical piece, because Phil used to play the Ibert and Glazunov pieces, and it sounds like that. I said "But this is jazz; it's with a big band not an orchestra. So he said, "bring it down. We'll check it out.' I pretty much live to hear my shit played, so I said, okay. BTW, to name a white alto player, I was thinking of naming Sheila Cooper, who I mentioned in the "Artists" section, but then found out she had passed, so I did an RIP on her. ,

😎 Great record. One of Grant's best solos, IMO, is on Idle Moments.

A roommate in 1976 had an lp set of the complete Savoy masters. That was my first serious exposure to Bird. Somewhat later I bought cassette tape versions of some of the older lps. These were like sacred texts to me and I had backup copies of the cassettes! Later I got most of the Denon cds and eventually complete sets in several reissues including Japanese and finally the big Savoy and Dial complete set. Plus the live stuff and the Mosaic. Etc, etc. I would say if you don't have anything get the complete master takes. But if you are really into it eventually you get them all because he would spin off interesting and different ideas in every take. It's hard to listen to every take one after the other but in small doses it's worth it.

Ruby Braff “You Brought a New Kind of Love” Arbors cd Almost every time I play Braff I say to myself “I need to play more Braff.” There is so much to listen to, but anytime I listen to Braff I hear so much of the jazz history and flavor I love.

That's already out as a Select, isn't it? Also available as a download. Much as I love Dexter Gordon, I don't think Dexter's Blue Notes are a good candidate for a Mosaic set now. The recordings are pretty much all available as single cd's or the complete blue note set. I have the individual cds or in one or two cases hi res downloads. You can listen to the set here: https://archive.org/details/BBDex Qobuz has the complete blue note set in cd quality download. The set is also pretty cheap at the usual used sources.

Yes! I have three of the NoBusiness discs, and I need to listen to them more closely.

Spring is here, and it's time to start a Jug-A-Thon once again. I think I'll start with this one:

I still say get the Complete Savoy and Dial from 2000. There are a couple on Discogs for $70 and $58. A steal in my opinion. If you don’t like alternates or false starts, just skip over them.
