  1. Past hour
  2. As is their CD version. I'll stick with that.
  3. All five albums jammed into three glorious CD's, surprisingly good sound quality. Great fun.
  4. A lot of crime ficition has been moved to the second row in the bookcase by now, but, besides Chandler and Hammett, Ross Thomas is still displayed with all his 25 novels in the front row... somewhere between thriller and crime I'd say... I also love Lawrence Block, especially but not only, the Bernie Rhodenbarr series and Charles Willeford... incidentally, Ethan Iverson has written loads of great posts about people like Thomas, Block and Willeford... (I discovered Thomas via Jörg Fauser and then the other two via Iverson) for example, this is the Thomas post https://ethaniverson.com/newgate-callendar/ah-treachery-ross-thomas/
  5. I would assume Detroit was the historical connection between Joe Henderson and Danny Spencer. Of course, Joe's brother Leon was in Cox's Contemporary Jazz Quintet.
  6. Today
  7. The one time I saw Dexter was at the Jazz Showcase, but Kirk Lightsey, David Eibankd, and Eddie Gladden. That would be fine too! But as long as Eddie Gladden is there, all should be well.
  8. Schubert Piano Sonata D.537 & D.568 Ingrid Haebler
  9. Raymond Chandler is an absolute great, though I've wondered if he would have been even better without the restrictions of the "whodunit" format. I have to say, I haven't heard of several of these writers. I'm guessing most of them are living and active.
  10. Been a fan of both Ralph and Oregon for just under 50 years. Favorites are Yet To Be from Oregon In Concert, any version of Icarus or The Silence of a Candle, all of Diary and Solstice and on and on. Glad I saw him solo at Big Ears, sad I never caught Oregon.
  11. George Pelecanos, Charlie Huston.
  12. Me too. Resonance isn’t particularly known for putting out high quality vinyl editions. If it appears to be Dexter Gordon with George Cables on piano that would be fine as well 😅
  13. Jerry Garcia “Electric on the Eel” box set disc 4
  14. #338 arrived yesterday, quite a handsome set.
  15. Definitely get all those Rivers! They are all great and volume one is my favorite.
  16. I love Jim Thompson! I re-read a Raymond Chandler recently (Lady in the Lake). I'm crazy about his writing. I've grown to really like the Quarry series by Max Alan Collins, and the Parker series by Richard Stark (Donald E. Westlake). Anti-hero stuff for sure. And I LOVE the B.Cool and Lam series by A.A. Fair (Erle Stanley Gardner).
  17. Back from a mediocre breakfast (food wise, good company–Lucy’s sister and her husband, we meet weekly). Playing Paul Desmond “Glad to be Unhappy” RCA/Legacy cd Sounds excellent today.
  18. OK, here's the most epic one of Kansas City that I know of... Jimmy Witherspoon With Jay McShann And His Band – Goin' To Kansas City Blues And after a LOT of digging around on DIscogs (simply searching on 'Pittsburgh' - and scrolling through pages and pages of results), this might be the only(?) jazz album I can find with an actual pic of downtown PGH on the cover... Frank Cunimondo – Frank Cunimondo Plays George Benson Live In Concert – Vinyl (LP, Album, Stereo), 1978 [r9325057] | Discogs Seems to have been a local guy, best I can tell. It's been on CD too -- but the cover looks way too 'CD modern' for my taste -- but I'm looking for LP covers anyway (if I'm gonna hang any). Every release on that same label is by Cunimondo -- so it's essentially a private label then... Mondo Records Inc. | Discogs Here's the cover of the CD reissue...
  19. I'm a big fan of Savage Night by James Thompson.
  20. Although I have read my share of mysteries over the years, my preference really is for crime fiction that does not feature the overworked "who done it" formula. In my younger days I liked the James Bond novels, early Forsyth, early Ludlum, etc. That was more espionage stuff, but I think these days I would prefer more "noirish" works--James M. Cain and work in that vein. I also like Elmore Leonard, though I have not read much of his work. I am looking for atmosphere and suspense--not so much mystery.
  21. Mal and Sonny Stitt in 1979. Definitely could be interesting though I prefer to hear Mal with more ‘out’ musicians. I’d buy it anyway to keep that Waldron collection complete….
  22. It’s very good. Clear and well balanced. Tyler in the left and Cross in the right. Nice bass. Definitely sounds like it comes from the tapes by o believe that was already confirmed
