It’s a warm morning. Our new housemate American Bully Memphis has settled into the daily routines well after two weeks now. He’s napping on the bed with a full belly, giving me space on my listening chair. Starting off with a repeat listen to Monday Michiru “4 Seasons” Polydor Japan 2 cd, disc 1 This recording has always sounded so good and it sounds magnificent this morning!

The great British acoustic bass player has passed at 86. He played with many of my fave folk/jazz artists like Pentangle (that was his great solo arco introduction to "Reflection"), and Nick Drake (that was him playing bass on "River Man" (even though he had trouble reading 5/4 with the orchestra, he said, "Bollocks, I'll make up my own part!") . He also played with artists as diverse as Tubby Hayes, Kate Bush, John Martyn and Richard Thompson and many others.

Thanks to everybody who replied and sorry for the late reply. I timed the track Kenny W played. It does run 4:48. I had looked at Losin's listing of Bird's recordings of "I Can't Get Started" before I posted, but when I saw that the only one he listed at Birdland runs only 1:09 I assumed he had missed the one that Kenny played. Seeing Phil Schaap's view is very helpful in understanding that there's a lot of uncertainty about this track.

I learned recently that sometime in the late 1950s or possibly very early 1960s, Nelson Riddle wrote some arrangements for Count Basie. These were apparently played live by the Basie band, but not recorded.
