  1. Past hour
  2. You can definitely hear the Jimmy Scott influence here, splendidly so.
  3. Today
  4. πŸ‘Œ Agreed on all accounts. (I've listened to the McIntyre but don't own it.) It's a great sub-series.
  5. Red's debut, which many members here likely have. Wynton Kelly's playing is especially beautiful on this record. The liner notes state that Red's full name is: Junior Sylvester Kyner.
  6. Cal Tjader β€œCatch the Groove: Live at the Penthouse 1962-1967” Jazz Detective 2 cd set, disc 2
  7. Mine was due yesterday, looks as if it coming tomorrow instead.
  8. 15 records that yield a total of 30 to 60 tunes (i.e. 2 to 4 per disc), that makes sense indeed. So 40 to 60 tunes would make "about 2.5 on average" to 4 per disc. A possible total too.
  9. Here is the quote in question. I think it is likely Janak meant the 15 records or 30 sides all together had 40-60 tunes.
  10. Wasn't 16" the typical diameter of transcription discs for radio use?
  11. Which ones were 16" then? I mistakenly thought all V-Discs were that size.
  12. SIXTY tunes on ONE disc? That cannot have been the actual discs. I am no expert on these at all but AFAIK most often the V-Discs had 4 tunes per record (sometimes only 2, sometimes 3). That's what the discographies say, and that's what is on the handful of original V-Discs that I have. They all play at 78 rpm.
  13. A few more CDs on my shelves with Sonny Red. Still more CDs on my shelves with Sonny Red.
  14. πŸ’— Yes a great LP - love it!πŸ‘ πŸ’— Yep! its this one (also here as 12"Japan)
  15. I believe he had some type of malignancy that went into remission with treatment. Ironic that he then succumbs to a cardiac problem at his relatively young age.
  16. I may have been at one of the concerts these were selected from:
  17. Looking forward to the Oliver Lake volume finally hitting these shores, and can't wait to see what else they pull out of the vaults. All of the first 3 releases are phenomenal, maybe the Blythe most of all.
  18. Got mine yesterday via USPS. Started reading the booklet which has a long quote from Tony Janak in which he explains that the recordings were sent out on 12 inch discs with as many as 60 tunes on a double sided disc. Does anyone know what the playback speed was?
  19. Back perhaps a couple of years ago Ken was diagnosed with an illness, and had to cancel some appearances. After a period of time he returned and seemed to be doing well. I have seen Ken play in person more than a dozen times over the past (roughly) 20 years. He was not only a fine clarinet and saxophone player, but was also a very funny guy who usually made humorous comments at his gigs. He will be missed. R.I.P.
  20. Oh no! That's too young I was listening to his excellent work on that Charlie Byrd record just last night.
  21. Still more Stanley Cowell. This time as a sideman. Charles Tolliver - Mosaic Select 20 Disc 1 - originally released as Live at Slugs', Vols. 1 & 2 on Strata-East
