  3. Today
  4. It's a great volume in that series.
  5. I was there. It was a heartwarming and involving performance, about an hour of them (I believe that's Matana's preferred pronoun) riffing on heritage, history, politics and their new pet dog. They played some very nice soprano interludes although it was all pretty seamless and of a piece. I've seen them play enough times to not be bothered by this chat based performance. I do wonder whether mention of a head cold may have influenced what was performed. They opened for Lonnie Holly whose set was absolutely mind-blowing, my first experience of his music live (I enjoy his visual art a lot). There's a very deep well being visited to great effect there.
  6. Count Basie & His Orchestra – Kurhaus Concert 1954 ... 2015
  7. One of my favourite "Das Lied von der Erde" performances ....
  8. Interesting .... thnx for the hint 👌 ....
  9. I’ve listened to the streams of this on Amazon in advance of the CD ( sorry still occasionally buy off Amazon) . Sound quality is in line with previous versions as far as I can tell. The Frankfurt session is nicely balanced but sounds as if it was transferred from a trashed LP with some degradation of the sound. Aix-en-Provence is really good but was new to me. Despite being a lover of LPs I’m not sure the extra cost of the LP set can be justified given the sonic limitations of the source tapes.
  10. The sound is so good on the LP edition ( presumably CD too) because they used the tapes from the Vanguard rather than dubs created by Ruby immediately after the recording. Apparently the original 7.5ips tapes haven’t been used since then. The difference is startling to my ears
  11. Received the tone poet edition of the Rollins Vanguard material. The sound is noticeably better than previous versions with a real immediacy.
  12. Good one .... btw great Cover Art too ....
  13. Thanks. Just ordered it. (I also don't have these versions of Taxi War Dance and Tickle-Toe (which apparently is really Willow Weep for Me).
  14. Some great Buster Williams playing on offer ....
  15. 🎂🥳🎂🥳🎂 ....
  16. Then you want this one, which also has the great sessions with Nat King Cole and Una Mae Carlisle. https://www.discogs.com/release/14876055-Lester-Young-Volume-2-1939-1942-The-Complementary-Works
  17. Well that´s some of the hottest players around ! Wow!
  18. NFL to allow players to wear protective soft-shell helmet covers during games (msn.com)
  19. This arrived in the mail today, and I like it a lot. No weak tracks. Good for relaxing before getting ready for bed.
  20. Well, you're welcome to disagree, but I'm quite certain that I have seen the Coltrane recordings referred to as a "power trio."
  21. April 28 Blossom Dearie - 1924 Ann-Margret - 1941 Willie Colon - 1950 Chuck Leavell - 1952 ***** April 29 Duke Ellington - 1899 Russ Morgan - 1904 Donald Mills (of The Mills Brothers) - 1915 Toots Thielemans - 1922 I remember that Dizzy Gillespie once said, "Toots Thielemans would be the greatest jazz musician in the world if he just threw away that harmonica." Danny Davis - 1925 Big Jay McNeely - 1925 Carl Gardner (The Coasters) - 1928 April Stevens - 1928 I learned to my surprise not long ago that she had a big hit on her own about 1952. Ray Baretto - 1929 Joe Porcaro - 1930 He might be on a Lalo Schifrin album of Ms. TTK's. Lonnie Donegan - 1931 Rod McKuen - 1933 Willie Nelson - 1933 Zubin Mehta - 1936 Klaus Voorman - 1938 (Manfred Mann Chapter Two!, Revolver album cover, post-Beatles Lennon and Harrison, Nilsson) George Adams - 1940 Duane Allen (Oak Ridge Boys) - 1943 Hugh Hopper - 1945 Tammi Terrell - 1945 Tommy James - 1947 That's quite a selection!
  22. Bought a long time ago (I think in 2006, when it came out). I didn't think it was a bootleg as it was in proper paper packaging and I bought it from a regular CD shop. I think it's called so-called half official or gray market stuff. There are English liner notes and (presumably) Russian translations. It says 'Manufactured in EU / Under license from Universal Music Plc., Russia', so at least they had a contract in Russia, I guess. Musically, the atmosphere is a bit different as Leroy Vinegar plays bass instead of Smith's feet. I quite like it.
