  1. A rare one I'd guess - oops, I just saw the Fresh Sound name disclosing the fakery.
  2. Probably only Chicagoans will feel the loss, but he was important in that city for at least 5 decades. This was posted by Lauren Deutsch on FB - So sad to find out that saxman Jimmy Ellis passed this morning. Jimmy was among the last of an era that included Von Freeman, Gene Ammons, Johnny Griffin and so many more that carved out what came to be known as The Chicago Sound. An alum of DuSable High School under the tutelage of Cap't Walter Dyett, Jimmy went on to teach and mentor the generations who came behind him. His legacy will live on in each and every one of them.
  3. He's been interested in expanding his music to larger ensembles in the last decade and I have aided him in this effort. Go Mr Mitchell! In ten days he will be an amazing 81. Thank god he is in a position to do many things.
  4. Delving into this - beginning appropriately with disc 1
  5. Disc 3 - Borodin, Prokofiev & Rachmaninoff
  6. An oldie but goody. I think I bought the lp from the RCA Record Club in high school.
  7. The two Storyvilles total over 83 minutes and there is the "Live at Koncertsal" lp with 3 more pieces.
  8. How many discs?
  9. Haven't listened to it in years. Thanks for the prod.
  10. When I moved back to Chicago in 1975 Don DeMichael invited me to join the board of the newly revived Jazz Institute of Chicago and Helen was also on the board. She left the city after a couple of years and I never really got to know her.
  11. Many thanks for posting this.
  12. I am listening and having a great time. Thanks for the notice.
  13. Decided to dip into this today -
  14. Bobby's birthday today. In a recent email he said "Will be 87 in July…UGH!"
  15. Any followers here? Reactions? https://sunra.substack.com/
  16. Are the UK issues different than the US ones?
  17. Just recently became aware of this Storyville box (3 cds, 1 dvd). I had the 2 quartet discs but not the one with Lockjaw. The dvd has 45+ minutes of Griff at the Vanguard and 16 minutes of Jaws in Copenhagen. I got the box for $14 on Amazon last week and see it is up to $19 today. The dvd listing misses a 17 minute version of What is this Thing Called Love by Griffin.
  18. My friend guitarist Scott Fields has marked himself safe in Cologne via Facebook.
  19. Listening to the sonatas from this box.
