  1. I bought the lp at the time it was released. I was "in love" with Diz at the time - I thought he and Rollins and Ellington were gods, but I never could connect with the date and I still can't. I have to think early Clare and Diz and Duke were a mis-match.
  2. Choices better than Wal-Mart today. I mean, just imagine New Orleans R&B for sale in that place at that time!
  3. or contact Amazon.
  4. I have a couple of those - the Newton and Freeman discs. Dandy way to hear music - it makes you concentrate.
  5. I bought my first 12" lp (Fats Domino on Imperial) from a grocery store in 1957. It was sealed in a plastic bag. The store was Mac's Super Value in Story City, IA, a farming community with a population of around 1200 souls.
  6. Von Freeman was wonderful last night at the Green Mill. Chicago members should note he'll be there again tonight.
  7. Headed to the Green Mill tonight to hear Von Freeman.
  8. Good, I'm off the hook.
  9. Nothing wrong with being a specialist.
  10. Why would we want anyone writing in an old style - appreciate the previous work, mourn the loss and move on. Writing in the earlier style is like playing in the old style and leads to stuff like the HIP movement in classical music, Wynton and Eric Alexander. There are a few extraordinary artists like Ruby Braff to counter theis but... Picking over the bones of a dead music is an interesting hobby for specialists, but is usually just that.
  11. Send the parents the bill, seal the box and mail it somewhere.
  12. I had all this material on lp and bought the box mainly to get the Jack Sheldon session on cd. At the Newbury price, I consider the rest bonus tracks.
  13. Got mine but too busy to play - sorry. I'll try to get it on tonight. I expect a bunch 'cause I enjoy the band and Sam's peices.
  14. Too much to digest. Open a store.
  15. OJ DR J Jay and the Americans
  16. or not. The recorded music marketplace is brutal.
  17. Geez! Wish I was closer 2 you guys.
  18. I'm still trying to build up the courage to ask Ann if it's ok to buy this.
  19. For anyone waiting to see reactions to the box, buy the About Times and decide on the Mosaic as a result. The ATs and more are wonderful.
  20. As I said before, he came to my small town, Iowa school (maybe 300 students, k-12) around 1957. I was in the band and was transfixed by his playing.
  21. One out of three ain't bad. Inspired by Mr Loaf.
  22. I saw him do the dance at the Plugged Nickel in 1967 or '68. I was sitting about 4 feet away and he stopped, facing me, and pulled up his zipper.
  23. If you read the thread, post 122 mentions this.
  24. My first thought was early Moondog.
