  1. Just returned from an amazing set at the Velvet - Fred Anderson, Kidd Jordan, Harrison Bankhead, Henry Grimes and Muhal Richard Abrams. They played an hour set and took a break. We had to leave then but ran into Oliver Lake on the street heading in with his alto. The place was jammed.

    Don Byas

Checking mine, I see you are correct. The lp was issued over 10 years after the session. This was recorded as a Bud Powell date - a companion to the Portrait of Thelonious disc. Don was a sideman.
  8. We all understand the "vague" part of your recollection.
  9. Remember to thank me for the Harold Land Folk Music date.

    Don Byas

When the LP was first released, it was billed as Don Byas / Bud Powell, and Byas's portrait was on the cover. As Marty pointed out, that is the back. Bud is on the lp cover.
  11. Actually, we was in the control room. Ann and I came late after a night of Tim's band in Muskegon. I think we got there for the 3rd tune. Wonderful to find this fine music in our backyard.
  12. I hope John didn't steer you wrong. :-)
  13. Not many sessions but I put forth Garvin Bushell. He recorded with Jelly Roll Morton and John Coltrane (at the Vanguard). Pretty damn amazing.
  14. Leaving on the road early in the morning. I just can't pull the trigger on Sangrey's recommendation of a McGriddle.
  15. Nothing tonight but we leave in the morning for the Chicago Jazz Festival.

  17. The Americas were issued first but BYG claimed the tapes were taken from them.
