  1. Well, I've written myself up a couple of times. Gotta be careful from now on. My wife (Ann) gave her employer 2 months notice that she was retiring. Requirements for her replacement include a BA and seven years experience as a buyer. They have had seven applicants and they were all unemployed.
  2. Heard on the news this morning our county (Muskegon) has beat Detroit's unemployment figures - Muskegon 22%, Detroit 21.
  3. Please explain! Why is Jazz Record Mart a shadow of its former self? I have not been there in several years--what happened? They kept getting squeezed on the rent. Now they are in a walkdown location with maybe half the space of the old location. I just find it claustrophobic. The used CD area is generally a big mess. The staff are far less approachable than before (maybe because they sense more hard times for the store -- hard to know). It's probably still the best dedicated jazz store in Chicago, but I find it so much less pleasant that I don't want to go in anymore. How long ago did they move to this new location? I didn't notice an address change in recent years on my copies of Rhythm and News. Don't remember - 3 or 4 years ago. We discussed it a bit on the board at the time. They still have a ton of stuff (though mostly new material - few great finds in the used CDs), but I just don't like the vibe there anymore, so I don't go. I have the same feeling when I go in - plus, their prices can be, well, pricey. At least they are near Star of Siam, so I can get some good curry after a browse (which again, I don't do as much anymore). I went to grad school in St. Louis and have to echo the thoughts about Vintage Vinyl. I was hesitant to move to that town, but VV sold me on the belief that I could survive for three years (this was pre-internet). I remember several Euclid locations too and they were always happy to take my money. Don't think the inventory has been reduced to meet the space. Ask for stuff. It is really just rearranged from my experience.
  4. I'm really tired of having Goodwin shoved down my throat by a local npr station. His name is in the intro (with Ellington, Kenton, etc) and I tune out after my listening experiences.
  5. All the best with your belated venture. It ain't easy.
  6. Maybe Chas has since he had pics early in the thread.
  7. The Braith double is available at Melle prices too. Another preference for the Riverside Wilkerson too. Reminds me of My Name is Albert Ayler.
  8. Judging by the label, not an original. I believe the first had a circular Delmark logo. That is what I have. Chuck has been over this before, though, and I forgot his answer... Yeah, not surprised. One hell of a record though of course!! Glad to have it on clean vinyl. Not a first pressing. Give praise to your god for this. The early pressings were crap.
  9. Too hard to choose but I would include the Ammons/Lewis set.
  10. My father died December 6, 2006. This thread reminded me too.
  11. Just called the furnace service guy yesterday for a cleaning/tuneup. He will be here Tuesday.
  12. I will trade our winters for your summers any day.
  13. Look for a Bradford/Stevens double in Feb/March. Working on the package right now. Tapes were transferred a couple months ago.
  14. Bradford recordings are pretty scarce so THIS is good news. Edit to add (from an Entropy email): Entropy Stereo is pleased to announce the release of Midnight Pacific Airwaves by the Bobby Bradford Extet. This release is the first time this late night radio broadcast has been available to the public at large. Many of you know of Bobby Bradford’s work as the trumpet player for Ornette Coleman prior to his recording debut. Bradford also appeared on the seminal Science Fiction album by Coleman. Bradford’s work as a leader also includes several issues under his own name. No stranger to the outer realms of music, Bradford appeared on albums with the Spontaneous Music Ensemble which were released as several sessions on Freedom, Nessa and Emanem. Of no small consequence were Bradford’s releases on the Flying Dutchman label with longtime partner John Carter. On Midnight Pacific Airwave, Bradford is joined by the incomparable James Newton on flute, Richard Rehwald on bass and John Goldsmith on drums. It was not uncommon for Bobby to perform over the air with an ensemble. This is perhaps one of the most special documents of his live performances. Included as a bonus track is a duet with Vinny Golia recorded more recently. There is an element of timelessness to Bradford’s music as evidenced by historical and more recent recordings included herein. Midnight Pacific Airwaves stands to fill a gap in Bradford’s recording career. Lovingly mastered from the original tapes, this release is a document of a true master whose music is under represented.
  15. Anton's in my top ten favorites.
  16. Our lapsed friend Couw was the master.
  17. Don't really care. If friends are nominated I hope they win.
  18. Indeed. Should have been about 20 years earlier
  19. I thought this might be a thread about Bernie Brightman.
  20. At least most of the blues nominees were black guys! Gotta count for something.
  21. I am sure Handy is a fine professional musician. Just not sure he's worth the Mosaic treatment. For "rarity" reasons, I'd choose Roulette any day.
  22. Got to reluctantly agree with you there, for the most part... Cut date might be a bit late.
