No idea, I'm not an expert, but he uses CEDAR for noise reduction. The 5 JSP Fats Waller sets I have sound rather "dead" to my ears, though not as bad as the RCA sets that were issued in the 1990s. Cedar is a suite of tools and each can be used to different degrees. Much too broad a stroke to complain about the system. He might deaden the sound before using Cedar. You never know unless you know what he's using and how. It is like blaming Studer for a lousy recording. Since you edited to talk about the RCA sets, they were done over an 8 year span with different tranfer and mastering engineers. Some of the later sets sound wonderful. Once again, too broad a stroke.

Curious which part(s)/aspects of Cedar you think he uses too much.

'cept he undervalues the pre-bop recordings. From the early recordings in 1939 there was something special happening. Alfred Lion's work from Ammons, Lewis and Hines thru Monk, Silver, Nichols, Hill and Taylor is an exemplar for all who follow.

That's one on my wish list! And a tricky one to get a good copy of. Lots of copies with breakfast fry-up hiss ! The very first editions with the large DG have no hiss. The later, with narrow DG have sometimes. The last with no DG at all, has the hiss. Correct, in my experience with New Jazz pressing, this is pretty common. Usually large DG's sound much better then later pressings. All the noise you hear is the degradation of the metalwork. Thanks for the explanation!
