  1. My favorite Shostakovich piece (I currently have 49+ cds and a few lps) is Symphony 4. Amazing piece and my favorite (by far) performance is the Naxos disc by Ladislav Slovak. This series has had a bunch of critics complaining, but the 4th is an amazing performance.
  2. Can't imagine Chewy doesn't know about Jewel Grant and William Woodman, to say the least. Jewel is all over the '40s and '50s west coast stuff and WW is the tenor playing brother of Britt Woodman - that's why he's known as Brother Woodman.
  3. You don't look like it. Wishes unfulfilled.
  4. I will never buy a pork/pineapple cone again.
  5. All the best in the coming years young man.
  6. More correctly, I think he claimed the piano vamp.
  7. And Chris might remember I was sent on a wild goose chase a few years ago searching for the Lil/Tadd tape. This included going through the remnants of Red Saunders' estate and a cabin in Michigan. Sadly, no results.
  8. Bud light for everyone.
  9. I just remember the label as a cheap reissue label (of the type to delete one tune). Did Howe do any original recordings for them?
  10. I have learned to control this with 2 graham crackers with a thin layer of butter. You will live longer.
  11. My dead father is still waiting for the big bands to come back. Oh! Big bang. Yeah, that too.
  12. FWIW, I loved Dixon's music from the beginning. The quartet record with Shepp was acquired while I was still in school. I think the RCA lp was a minor masterpiece. But, like Chris, I had lousy dealings with him (mine in the early '70s) and from what I hear from friends involved in his Chicago appearances, he is still that guy. Blame the system or blame Bill Dixon - he's still a first class jerk in my book. I still buy and listen to his music.
  13. More likely some sitting in.
  14. I thought WCF was the goat. Interesting picture.
  15. Good one Chris. Hey, this is the way of the world. I'm fascinated by antiquity. I cannot even begin to fully imagine all the marvels lost forever. . . . It's been said many times before, but this is what you get when you live in a throwaway society/culture. True, look at the old Yankee Stadium, I mean if a guy like me would visit NYC, a hot dog during a match would have been a highlight. Yup. Only time I saw it was from a train platform when I realized I'd missed my transfer to get to Rudy's studio. When I saw the stadium, I knew I'd messed up.
  16. Jeez! You and Kudlow! Now I understand. Did you miss the point where Joe and company laughed at Kudlow's comments? edit to say I just realized you didn't see the broadcast in question.
  17. Amen. No, it's not BS. The government definitely did. I just don't think that it played a significant role in what was ultimately, for a while, an extremely profitable industry. Guy Why not BS? I'd really like to know.
  18. I just don't understand the "easy music is good" mindset. From the beginning I viewed music as a "growth area" and have not changed my mind. This went from Elvis to Little Richard and from Armstrong to whatever. I guess I don't trust "easy music". Much of it is good but much is the worst aspect of "comfort food". If we stop growing and expanding our horizons, we are marking time 'til death. YMMV. I hate the fact I'm writing this about music over 30 years old. Guess this speaks to the giant cultural detour coinciding with the Reagan election. America can be deadly to brains.
  19. Why not click on "Used & new from XXXX" link? Much better prices for new copies.
  20. I have all but one of the lps and will get one.
  21. Have not bought a Tyner date since the '70s. Not a 'dis', just the trurh. Liked the big band at the Chicago fest a couple of years ago - sounded like a real band.
  22. G'bye. Another one bites the dust.
  23. I sure enjoy interrupting this AL thread once in a while.
