  1. One night when I was there the next table was occupied by Sue and Charles Mingus. They were eating dinner. On another night I was with Michael Cuscuna, Maxine Gregg, Shirley Seltser (sp?) and Dexter Gordon. I'm sure all the conversations messed with the music.
  2. Pressing 1000 cds to start is an industry standard. If you stay at the same pressing plant, you can get more at a rate of 500 at a time. Printing booklets is a different matter. They probably printed 2500 books.
  3. Mamie Van Doren Mamie Eisenhower Ike Quebec
  4. Just came across your comments and would beg to differ. From someone who worked with Junior for years as a sideman, I can tell you he was very conciencious about how the music was presented to his audience: His repertoire was a wide-ranging mix of under-played standards to many negleted gems of Monk, Tadd Dameron and others. The structure of his sets were always well balanced. He made sure every tune had introductions, codas and solo backgrounds. He announced the names of every piece and maintained the momentum – as he used to say, "No lulls!" You could say that Junior was not one who seeked the limelight and he may not have been a great business man when it came to promoting himself. But when it came to playing and performing, he was all business. I think we are saying the same things from different perspectives.
  5. Nah, if I'd been there I'd be right up front. Don't you know I'm a pushy guy?
  6. You might underestimate the power of musicians playing material the listener can identify.
  7. Yeah, it was a piano/bass bar when I frequented the place in the '70s. Heard Al Haig, Duke Jordan, Randy Weston, Jaki Byard, George Cables, Jimmy Rowles etc. Generally stopped by Happy Tunes beforehand to chat with Fred Norsworthy and buy some records.
  8. Bought it when issued. Sold it in my vinyl purge about 15 years ago. Two tracks, totaling about 10 minutes, were contained in a Savoy double lp set called "New Music: Second Wave".
  9. Frances Faye Marty Faye Marty Ingels
  10. Screw the sale. If you want something relatively obscure get it now. Check some of your favorites on Amazon and you will see they are only available from "sellers". Bunches of stuff has gone away. For example, check out Lennie Niehaus.
  11. I'll take a pass. Been there, done that.
  12. Probably 2000 recordings you need first.
  13. Think I caught "Bjork" while camping in the Northwoods. I hope these meds cure me.
  14. Damn Straight!!! Unfortunately, that bastard CT also stole my bike when I was twelve, and then killed my grandma with her own cane! Never knew she was impaired.
  15. Just finished a glass of milk with my dinner.
  16. I expected a shot of him pissing on a calendar.
  17. Losing him and Vonnegut in a short span is a real blow to me and maybe to an entire generation of readers.
  18. Curious if they serve Maxwell House or Folgers.
  19. Every time I hear about the Andorrans I think of this guy... Do you have proof this is the guy? I have gunmen looking for him!
  20. Waiting on both Braxton "Standards" boxes. Got both for a total under $100.
  21. Boy are you going to be disappointed.
  22. It could also mean it "timed out". I find it difficult to believe they sold all of 'em.
  23. I can't remember exactly, but I think RVG worked out a weekly routine by which Prestige, Savoy and Blue Note used different days to record at his studio. If someone has the patience it shouldn't be too difficult to work out a RVG discography for, say, the mid-to-late 50s and see what his weeks were like. A hard job but someone had to do it, I guess F I've been in touch with someone writing a book about RVG's studios. It will include a complete listing by date of sessions. I understand Rudy let him copy the studio log books. Edit for stupid typo.
  24. Now that we have him "cornered"........................................
