The Police reunite on the Grammys last night
Chuck Nessa replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
The Beatles? "The Beatles" is just kind of a lame pun. But "The Police" is the polar opposite of what rock is supposedly all about. I mean, if they'd called themselves "The Hall Monitors," or "The Crossing Guards," then that would have been kind of funny. But "The Police"? So......it's the obvious name for a band looking for "teen" support. Marketing 101. Examine the target, examine yourself. -
I wish someone would issue the '30/'40 material without the Holiday material - I already have that stuff about 4 ways. English and Canadian CBS issued a fine 2 lp set (copied but adapted by US Columbia) of some of the rest called Teddy Wilson & His All-Stars. Great stuff. I had the lps and now have a cd of the first record (found in a Canadian "used" store). Why do the Spanish thieves concentrate on the '50s?

Ornette Coleman's Science Fiction Sessions
Chuck Nessa replied to donald byrd 4 EVA's topic in Discography
Nice story. Thanks Don. -
I've probably said this before - In 1994 I helped Lazaro Vega and the late Gordon Darrah with a listener's guide to jazz recordings for WBLV. In the last part of the booklet the contributors were asked to list 10 recordings not fitting the "historical" perspective of the main text. In that section I mentioned "Face to Face" with this message: My choice for best organ/tenor record of all time. A serious jam party. This is why God allowed Mr. Hammond to desecrate the organ.

Chuck Nessa replied to donald byrd 4 EVA's topic in Discography
I was irritated by the way the documentation for the Columbia 2fer was presented so I made the following listing: Ornette Coleman Columbia Sessions Sorting out The Complete Science Fiction Sessions original issue Mr. Coleman appears on all tracks. Midwest Snow storm
Chuck Nessa replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My dad lives in St. Joseph, MI, and was supposed to meet me in Chicago this evening for an event at the CSO. The sheriff of the county where he lives sent out a warning to everyone to stay off of 90 because there had been dozens of accidents and conditions were hazardous. Luckily, the majority of the snow is just south of Chicago. We've only gotten about 3 or 4 inches over the past few days. The cold and wind are nasty, though. Why's you dad in touch with the sheriff? -

The wind blows forward, the wind blows back but Lester BLOWS. -
Same here. Glad to see it back in print.

I've been trying to find an "opening" to make the trek to Chicago for some studio work. Just cancelled for the rest of the week based on predictions. It's a bitch getting around Lake Michigan this time of year. -
Billy Strayhorn
Chuck Nessa replied to skeith's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
If you are saying that if Duke hadn't hired him, he wouldn't have accomplished much and might have died alone in PA, well, that's impossible to dispute. Obviously no one would know him if Duke hadn't hired him. The bigger question is, what would the Ellington-Strayhorn songs sound like if Duke hadn't hired him? Obviously we would still celebrate Duke - but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't celebrate Strayhorn as well. Strayhorn is fine and I celebrate him. Ellington's reputation was established earlier. But its not as if Ellington's reputation iis based solely on that pre-collaboration period. It was for me. -
Shivers up and down my spine. Looks like a mistake.

Hey that is cheap, compared with a MINT Blue Note from Italy. And, hey they might actually deliver your chair. Not interested in those either. Had 'em, sold 'em, -

Lee Konitz's "Tranquility" ... what a gem

Good to hope Lee eventualy gets money. Not a bad thing. -

Anyone spending $750+ for a friggin' chair has too much money. Time for reform. -
"Artist" with no real "artistic vision" and a producer with lots of ideas about what is salable.

Upcoming Andrew Hill live album for BN
Chuck Nessa replied to Guy Berger's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Hello everyone - let's get together and send Pampers to Rooster. -
Hate to fight with Late. Clubhouse was left in the can for a reason. BN stretched the envelope enough with Gettin' Around. These are the two weakest Dexter/BN dates in my estimation.

Ornette @ grammys
Chuck Nessa replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I guess so. But why didn't he do a trial run with that hand held camera stuffed all up in his grill? That was the stupidest fucking thing I ever saw. That's all I needed was a nasty-assed close up of some dweebs face while he struts around singing about how fine he is and how his baby did him wrong. No thanks, give me an unprofessional street performer banging on tin cans any day. Looks like you watched the show more closely than I did. -
Billy Strayhorn
Chuck Nessa replied to skeith's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
did you actually watch it yourself? i thought it was pretty fair-minded and balanced about that "thesis". there was a lot of speculation as to whether billy would have been able to accomplish much without duke during that time. that because of billy's personality, sexuality and society's prejudices at that time that he needed to "hide behind" someone like duke to allow his genius to flow. I burned a disc and watched it - twice. Billy was NOT ABLE to "accomplish much without duke" and that is my point. He might have died alone in PA. The Stravinsky and Mahler comparisons were stupid. Jazz "fans" diminish the art by comparing it to another form. -
Louis Armstrong, Hot Fives and Hot Sevens box
Chuck Nessa replied to Guy Berger's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The JRT Davies transfers for JSP were done a couple of decades ago. If he'd done them later they would sound different. You can still find the Sony set online for reasonable prices if you search. Not that the Sony set is perfect, but it's pretty damn good. -

Timbercrap turned in a decent performance on the show. He was "professional"" at least. Others were not. -
I got a half dozen titles off jazzmusicdepot. No problems. All were sealed and thus very nice. I've bought some too. No problems. MG Tom is a good guy (I have sold him stuff for years) and he gets the records direct from Schlitten. Have no fear.
