  1. I heard that band in a small club and the overpowering sound of the band will last a lifetime. His sound was larger in person than I'd suspected from the records. He always seemed to be comfortable in his skin. Not many can say that.
  2. I'd be happy for you to check your closet but I DO have the Cherry AND Lacy dates mentioned. In the mid '70s Nesuhi had offered to sell them to me and copies were sent. This was through Cuscuna (Atlantic employee at the time). The masters died in the fire but I still have my copies and Michael certainly kept a set for himself. I took a cassette dub of both dates to Texas when I visited Jim Sangrey a few years ago. He and Brenda hosted a party and it was played for the folks there.
  3. It was simply a project never completed. There is no "other half".
  4. Off form is more like it. Another detraction is Charles Davis.
  5. Got one of these in Buffalo?
  6. I used to have one of these.
  7. Might be 'cause there are damn few titles to add.
  8. The two of you will enjoy the show. Go.
  9. IIRC, Billy was sort of on the BN "payroll" and got an extra $50 per session.
  10. Maybe now.
  11. For those interested in alternates (not issued in the Classics series), I hope you are aware of the Neatwork label which is issuing the "missed" takes. I have a bunch of 'em.
  12. An collector acquaintance of mine provided a number of "source 78s" for them.
  13. Discussed earlier this week HERE
  14. OTOH, tell me where you have the complete master takes of Henderson, Cab Calloway, Mills Blue Rhythm, Johnny Dodds, Edgar Hayes, Red Allen, Joe Sullivan, Don Byas, Cootie Williams, Putney Dandridge, Hot Lips Page, Bud Freeman, Andy Kirk, Cozy Cole, Stuff Smith, Richard M Jones and dozens of others. You can bitch about details, but this is a heck of an undertaking.
  15. Though new releases continue, the bulk of the catalog is currently out of print. They have not reprinted. If you are interested in any of the series, jump in and keep up. Member "Jaffa" writes the notes and has an "in". I suggest contacting him for repressings you think would be worthwhile.
  16. Sad indeed, but his most lasting impact should be as a photographer. Films were frosting on the cake.
  17. Sounds like you got some really, really good shit. Wanna share?
  18. They lost many/most first generation masters of the era. Many Atlantic cds originate with the lp "production masters" and master copies sent to foreign licensees.
  19. Yes. Dizzy and Rollins each made recordings there.
  20. Yes, this calls for something really special!
