I bought the lp when issued. If you care about the "travels" of AA, buy the disc. If not, go elsewhere. Do not buy the disc if you don't know the Ayler "milestones".

I like this date a bunch. My current copy is a Toshiba vinyl pressing. I've told this story before - about a month after it was first issued in the US I was in the Jazz Record Mart and encountered Kenny Washington. After "how ya' doin'"s, I mentioned how much I liked this date. Kenny "jumped down my throat" with "Damn, all the cats are into The Rajah". This Morgan date was released at the same time and seemed to be the "in" release. When questioned about the Mobley record, Kenny came back with negatives about Donald Byrd. I still enjoy both dates.

During that time, Max was "out of it" concerning what was going on in clubs, in private, on the street, etc. With his recordings, he seemed to be trying to do his best to be "hip" but other records by his "sidemen" were much closer to the mark. Max "thought" too much for his own good. Maybe you had to be there, but I think you should be able to follow the threads now.........

I always saw this record as an unfortunate "behind the curve" document. I got it when it was first issued.

Unlike you, I think the early Prestige sides show an affinity with Herbie Nichols and other "Brooklyn brothers" (Hope nd Weston) "off kilter" concerning harmony. I was really bummed by his career course.

Hey, I love Muddy's music. No disrespect meant on that account. That pic always had "other meanings" for me. I was "around" Muddy a bunch circa 1965-1982. For all Waters fans, get the MCA set called "Rollin' Stone / the golden anniversary collestion" (Aristocrat/Chess recordings 1947-52) and "Hoochie Coochie Man" (Chess recordings 1952-58) issued in a limited edition by Hip-O Select. This is the shit!

Not a clue about the manufacturers but I only buy Maxell and Memorex and have had no problems. You can always find good prices on one or the other.
