Do You Collect Anything ?
Chuck Nessa replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I collect classical recordings as well. Couple of years ago I started an "idiotic post" collection but my wife wants me to burn 'em in the fire pit - probably since so many are mine and she doesn't want the kids to know. -
Shaw thinks Tesch was crap too.

For BN you seem to have been born between Grant's Visions (5/21/71) and Hutcherson's Head On (7/1/71).

Good move. I was about to go ballistic! edit to add the second "l". -
Gee, looks like I ignored "what's his name" with the metal rimmed glasses and the curly locks. Dang.

DeFranco is ok, just never struck me emotionally. Too cold, but a good techie. Pepwhatski is below my radar - choice, not ignorance. Davern irritates the shit out of me. Peter F's statement is insulting. I've heard him for years and we can take a poll about being out of touch. KV, yeah, right. Bill Smith (Brubeck guy, right?) too "scholarly". I another thread someone recommended the Grawe/Braxton Okka recording. Tony plays the shit out of his clarinet on this disc. With a nod to DeFranco and Frank Chace (should he decide to record), most of my favorite living players came out of the AACM and play the instrument as a 2nd or 3rd choice. A special nod to those playing "Albert system" instruments. Those babies just sound better to me. Kalaparusha was at one time (not sure about the last few years) a master of the "Albert" horn.

The early OJC cd is stereo with two exceptions (Off Minor - take 4 and Crepuscule - take 6). The K2 reissue is mono excepting Crepuscule -takes 4 & 5 (a composite).

Is Jim smart or what? Reality suggests we may not know.

I have sweaters, boots, books, records and children older than you.

Guess I'll go on "vacation" for a generation if these recommendations are "the best". -

This tune gives me the heebie jeebies, creepy crawlies, etc. My favorites are recordings missing this tune. -
I see someone 'fessed up and joined CA in the "wise" category.

I was in graduate school there, and met Chuck when I went by the record store and was amazed by the Art Ensemble window display, lps by Roscoe, Lester, et al. Asking who did it, I met Chuck. (Didn't know who it was I met until telling this story online, and Chuck said it was him). Caught the AEC performing in Spring '72 at the Newman (Roman Catholic) Center just off campus. Chuck used to run a record-store operation here in Bloomington, too. There's a guy here who hosts and performs in a weekly jazz gig here who still talks of his awe as a teenager at going in to buy AEC records, and how Chuck brought them to B-town for a concert. Actually Michael Bourne was in charge of the concert. "Babycakes" as Mike would say. My occupational travels moved us in an Iowa City, Chicago, Bloomington, Madison, Boston, Chicago, Whitehall adventure.

Yup. I remember Pete as a record salesman in Chicago before his entry into the LA show biz scene. He was the "master of the broom". A couple of guys on this group remember the distinct "culture" of record salesmen of the '50s - '70s. -
What Next? How 'bout Fruit Having Sex!
Chuck Nessa replied to RDK's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Don't fruits have sex all the time, with no guilt? -
It is all "just artwork", Reid Miles' sense of humor. The 2 session aspect of the date was less of an issue in the lp format with the sessions segregated. This record also spans the Hackensack to Englewood Cliffs move. 2 wonderful dates combined.

In my haste I misread you post. I apologize.

LF: Elmo Hope "Trio and Quintet"
Chuck Nessa replied to Bluesnik's topic in Offering and Looking For...
It is all MARKETING! BN offered retailers repressings of discontinued titles. The deal was no returns. BN would take the orders, fill 'em and the stores 'owned' the product. The friggin' stickers were to alert BN that no returns were acceptable. Nothing "special" about this stuff. -
As the guy who discovered the 2 versions, and big having opinions about the 2, I need to go back and listen again.
-
I don't think so. Is this a "whites are just as good as blacks" thread?
-
I have listened to Hank/Hamid for almost 30 years. I feel he has an unfortunate habit of "following". I want more from a drummer. But on the other side of things he's one of the best still operating.

As a major "pisser" on Rat's "intellectual" thread I should say something, I guess. If it came up again I'd respond the same way. The reason is his choice of a JMc piece. I have known JMc since 1966 and think he's an idiot and a real jerk. I foolishly had this identical fight with John back then and it is really old news to see the same crap again. If I'd encountered the piece in the magazine I'd have ignored it, but read the letters to follow. I think Rat made an unfortunate choice and paid the price. I should also say I am suspicious of "intellectual discussions" which tend to have more words than ideas and a 40 year old fight fits that bill for me. edit to correct the year I met JMc.
