I've never gotten into Andrew Hill, period. But then, I haven't listened to much beyond Point Of Departure. Still, I'm glad to have seen him solo live shortly before his death.

Mark E Smith of the Fall was touting the Monks back in the 80s, and covered two of their songs on "Extricate" (1989) but they remained largely unheard until a mid-90s CD reissue on Henry Rollins' short-lived Infinite Zero label--that's when I was finally able to hear them. Infinite Zero was rad--they also issued on CD for the first time very early Trouble Funk recordings, the middle two Gang of Four albums, and Devo.

An Die Musik in Baltimore doesn't have this on their online schedule...

I have an update. I took things into my own hands and called the 888 toll-free number, and the man who answered the phone (Mark Fisher?) told me that a May/June issue was coming by the end of May, and that they would get back on schedule after that. I was more surprised that someone answered the phone--I was certain the magazine was defunct. We'll wait and see what happens. I'm not optimistic in this economy.

Peter Evans was the name that grabbed me. I like his solo "More and More" and the Trio record on Firehouse 12.

It's one of the first jazz records I ever heard. That was my reaction too. One of the records that changed my life.

I have good dreams about finding Mosaics (that don't exist in the real world) second-hand for a good price in a grubby record shop, like a "Complete mid-70s Evan Parker" collection.

Apropos of Byard, how's the Parisian Solos album on Marge? I've seen it, but never pulled the trigger, cause I have a lot of Byard already.
