  1. Love this disc. Steel pan jazz, well I never!
  2. "The Dark Tree" is just amazing. Compelling like a steamroller, and the version(s) on this album are by far the best. Good on yer, John Carter.
  3. Is that what "Teasing the Korean" means?
  4. Oh man, there should be a thread, he's done some great jazz photography and writing. I see there's but one article on the web that mentions his death. Died the same year Coda did.
  5. Man all of these "funny stories" are rather...depressing. Thank god for Han Bennink.
  6. He sounded amazing, period. I went to Blues Alley last night, and Minsarah announced he will be in the hospital for observation for several days. Nothing but good thoughts for Lee. Minsarah were okay, I just wish Blues Alley announced at the beginning, or put up a sign at the front door that Lee was not playing.
  7. Is this the "Fellowship Foundation" Family, or the creepy Spanish childfuckers?
  8. Yeah, beat the bootleggers at their own game. One problem, those who would most likely be interested in the Ronnie Scott shows really aren't into MP3s. I hate that those Harkits were not legit. I love them! I figured if it was from the UK it couldn't be a bootleg label, 'cause they have stronger copyright laws right? I guessed wrong.
  9. Any decent discographies? I too am entranced by MLW and would like to complete my collection. I've got a lot (most?) of what's currently available on CD but not the Chronological Classics.
  10. PP sent today. I'm ashamed I didn't notice this appeal sooner. Thanks for an amazing message board, guys.
  11. Whenever I see that name I get all excited that it's about Her Serene Highness and not the teenage Phil Woods fan
  12. Firstly, many thanks for the info received Unfortunately I don't have any workshop number details - record sleeve info is minimal apart from performing musicians All I can give you are LP details 1. NDR Die Jazz-Werkstatt '65 - 629.851 See relyes' post above for the discographical details for that one.
  13. Some internet searching seems to indicate that the mono mix is on the out-of-print Phil Spector retrospective "Back to Mono".
  14. I can't wait for this. That Devilin' Tune had so many revelations for me, especially the first volume.
  15. That was the original mono mix of River Deep, Mountain High that was released as a 45. My hip father bought a copy of that 45 when it first came out and it blew my mind. The mix on the later LP, a primitive early stereo experiment that put Tiny much lower in the mix, always sucked compared to the 45. Unfortunately, most CD reissues have used the LP version. a-HA! I'ver only once heard the Philles 45 version, and it is as you say - and then some! And I've told everybody since that unless you've heard the 45, you haven't hear "River Deep, Mountain High". This video would of course be an edited version, right, due to the length? I gotta start hunting eBay for a Philles 45.... Am I crapping on this thread by saying I find Tina's vocals and mannerisms way too histrionic? It's all release and no tension.
  16. Yeah, but do you get all those porno covers in high quality?
  17. I was at that show, and it was indeed gripping.
  18. These may be worth a thread of their own in the Discography forum. Just a suggestion.
  19. I have the two-disc one, forget what it's called at the moment, but it's great!
  20. I've never gotten into Andrew Hill, period. But then, I haven't listened to much beyond Point Of Departure. Still, I'm glad to have seen him solo live shortly before his death.
  21. Mark E Smith of the Fall was touting the Monks back in the 80s, and covered two of their songs on "Extricate" (1989) but they remained largely unheard until a mid-90s CD reissue on Henry Rollins' short-lived Infinite Zero label--that's when I was finally able to hear them. Infinite Zero was rad--they also issued on CD for the first time very early Trouble Funk recordings, the middle two Gang of Four albums, and Devo.
  22. An Die Musik in Baltimore doesn't have this on their online schedule...
  23. I have an update. I took things into my own hands and called the 888 toll-free number, and the man who answered the phone (Mark Fisher?) told me that a May/June issue was coming by the end of May, and that they would get back on schedule after that. I was more surprised that someone answered the phone--I was certain the magazine was defunct. We'll wait and see what happens. I'm not optimistic in this economy.
  24. And available in the US too! Yeehaw! And I see the phantom two-starrer has gotten to them, as well.
