  1. In honor of Sweet Poppa Lou's 94th. I'm listening to the Japanese reissue with the bonus blues track.
  2. I hadn't listened to this one in probably 10 years somehow.
  3. Clifford Jordan's Dr. Chicago, with Red Rodney, Jaki Byard, Ed Howard and Vernel Fournier.
  4. I added this to my collection this week to join the second volume. Although the piano/recording quality is pretty wonky on the first session, it is a hoot and well worth acquiring. 'Night in Tunisia' is wild!
  5. I wish all of those Sandy's dates would've been reissued on CD. The bulk of the Cobb albums were on one disc. What bums me out is that some other tracks made a compilation that largely overlapped with the Cobb release when other tracks could have been reissued. Mosaic could have done a nice set (Select?) of those albums. At any rate, what I've heard via the two CDs is delightful stuff. Besides the all-star saxophonists, the rhythm section of Ray Bryant, George Duvivier and Alan Dawson can't be stopped for a jam session like that.
  6. Many of the people I know in my hometown have not been taking the virus seriously. As ill-advised gatherings move indoors, it'll be a rough fall and winter. My wife and I are going to ruffle feathers when we do take it seriously, so it is going to be a rough holiday season. In the end, my obligation to be safe and responsible trumps my desire to make people happy. It is still stressful, though.
  7. Such a great cover to match a great album.
  8. I have two of the Rivers releases and like them. I can't listen to the one much because I normally have my daughter with me and Sam appears to yell, 'Watch out, MFer.'
  9. 94! Happy Birthday, Mr. Donaldson!
  10. His name was totally unfamiliar to me. I wanted to check him out and saw this whole album available for streaming on Amazon Prime. I almost never use Prime for streaming, due to the albums often being incomplete and having ample options in my own collection.
  11. He is a new name to me, but I am intrigued. Rest in peace.
  12. I guess I am on a Clifford Jordan spree: In honor of the great Roy Haynes, I attempted a tap dance during a Reece solo. Roy was the only one doing a proper dance during it, though. I've seen Roy tap dance in his 90s, so I still have time to learn.
  13. Finished this: Now in the middle of:
  14. The clubs closed because no one went to them. They were too crowded.
  15. For the third time since receiving it yesterday.
  16. 'Forgive Me' is one of the great ballad performances of the new millennium.
  17. I'll have to listen to his work with Mingus and Andrew Hill again soon. Thank you for the music, Mr. Qamar, and rest in peace.
  18. A really strong jazz-funk date. Ray studied at Rutgers with Kenny Barron, Ted Dunbar and Ralph Bowen and was based in New York when he recorded this debut. He was living in Las Vegas when he was hit and killed by a train during a photo shoot for his planned second album.
  19. I bought it maybe 10 years ago and only listened to it a time or two a year until recently when it just hit me. It has that vibe that works for closing out a night or opening up a day. It's a bite-sized album at around 40 minutes, which lends itself to repeated listening. It's understated and subtle. I may have to start a recommendation thread about it and go into some detail.
