  1. I'm listening to an Art Blakey concert from 1973 from Wolfgang's Vault. The band: Carter Jefferson, Eddie Henderson, Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton, Mickey Bass and Ray Mantilla. The kicker? Sonny Stitt guesting on every song and Roy Haynes joining in on 'Night in Tunisia'. Wolfgang's Vault added a $10 credit to members' accounts for Black Friday. I downloaded this and a Giants of Jazz Newport gig. There are so many great concerts up.
  2. This is a crowd pleaser. My wife gets Christmas music, which I generally dislike, my daughter loves Pass (as do I) and I get a musically satisfying album.
  3. Whoa, Strozier with a big band! Sign me up. Now playing: For Hawes-led sessions, I only have this, For Real! and a short session from a Savoy compilation. I need to pick up more because he was a brilliant pianist. Given my love for Roy Haynes and Cecil McBee, the Jazz Showcase album would be a logical choice.
  4. My in-laws are attending various gatherings with people from various states today. Here's hoping their stupidity doesn't kill anyone. The three of us in our household will be doing the responsible thing and having a low-key holiday of our own. My wife has a much-needed vacation planned. Although we obviously didn't have any plans, she needs and deserves some time to recharge. Unfortunately, she is in healthcare and expects to cancel her vacation once the Thanksgiving aftermath hits.
  5. Finishing this from last night: Next up: Disc 6
  6. I'm listening to a Jimmy Smith jam session on Wolfgang's Vault. The lineup: Clark Terry, Joe Newman, Illinois Jacquet, Zoot Sims, Kenny Burrell, B.B. King (on one track) and Roy Haynes. Holy moly.
  7. The 6th Sonny Fortune album of the day. I'll probably listen to the bite-sized (at ~32 minutes) Trip on the Strip for the third time today to conclude today's Fortune spree. I have 4 more Fortune-led dates that will see some action in the coming days.
  8. Oh, yeah! I really like Points of View, the only album Holland made with Steve Wilson in the band (with Billy Kilson rounding out the lineup).
  9. I'll conclude the Blue Note trilogy today. It's interesting that Sonny acquired the rights to reissue the three albums on his own. It's pretty uncommon. I already owned the three albums as a download and this album as a physical release. However, a few months ago, I found a signed copy of the reissue box on eBay for a silly price (about 9 bucks).
  10. I was just thinking about this last week after getting Marty Paich's Jazz City Workshop, with Larry Bunker on vibes and the mellifluous Herbie Harper on trombone. It led me to listen to the Nocturne box (the two discs I own), which has a Harry Babasin date with Bunker on vibes and Bob Enevoldsen on valve trombone.
  11. The second Fortune/Lightsey Monk collection of the day.
  12. It's Thanksgiving week, so I'm reflecting on my good Fortune.
  13. I'm listening to the audio from the live DVD. It brings me back to when I caught this Jamal group in Detroit and Pittsburgh after this release.
  14. Two days later and it is up to $11.53.
  15. It has now jumped back up to $6.70, which is still a bargain. In my final Paich update, the album from earlier in the week is now $12.98.
  16. I received a signed copy of this from Jamal's website today.
  17. Sonny Fortune's debut album is on Amazon for $3.33 with free Prime shipping. I paid a whopping 6 cents more last night. I'm excited to hear it.
  18. Hmm, we probably should experiment with different destinations. Feel free to send me a Mosaic.
  19. The Paich album led me to finally rip this fine octet session that I hadn't heard in years. Fagerquist had tone! I think the Terry Pollard album with Fagerquist is next:
  20. Session O. This pandemic would be much more miserable without Mosaics like this.
  21. Well, after going down to $2.86, it is now up to $4.51 with 5 copies left (from the 12 that they had when I noticed the deal). Amazon's fluctuating prices are interesting to watch.
