  1. It's December, but the Cherry festival continues.
  2. I ordered a pink ukulele for my toddler for Christmas. When looking at our Amazon orders, my wife saw that it had been delivered on Tuesday. We didn't have it. The longest it could have been on our porch was an hour and it was gone. After poking around in the snow to see if it may have fallen off of the porch and gotten covered by snow, I walked the dog. I saw a box sitting on the tree lawn of the house two doors down. It had been there for days. I got closer and saw it was an Amazon box. It got closer and saw it was open. I then saw my name and the name of the ukulele company. I then saw that the ukulele was still inside! The thieves ripped opened the outer and inner boxes, saw it was a pink ukulele and ditched it! Although I was relieved that I recovered it and thought that it was kind of hilarious that not even thieves wanted a ukulele, I'm still angry about the theft. The box sat there for 3 days. Have porch pirates ever struck in your area?
  3. The shipping charge is $6 for a second CD. If you think of it as $16 per disc with a flat shipping rate of $4, it feels better. It is one of my favorite tribute albums. The song selection focuses on less obvious Shorter tunes matched with strong Fielder originals. Fielder also has a good band with him (featuring Jane Getz on piano).
  4. Yeah, but ~$20 for a CD including shipping is what you'll often pay on Bandcamp, even if the breakdown would usually be something like $15 plus shipping. I recommend his Wayne Shorter tribute and The Hipster.
  5. Lots of great playing here by well-known and lesser-known players alike. I never regretted a Mosaic Single purchase.
  6. Finished this: Bow playing this: Disc 7
  7. Don Cherry's Art Deco led me here. This has to be some essential Cedar Walton (with longtime colleagues David Williams and Billy Higgins) joining him. I'm glad that Art Deco brought Clay some attention in his final years.

    Ted Brown

I hope that he had a happy birthday. His daughter posted an update yesterday saying that he is still struggling financially in addition to having failing eyesight. Here is a link to the fundraiser: https://www.gofundme.com/f/r85ysv-assistance-for-jazz-tenor-sax-nonagenarian.
  9. I saw no reason to not listen to more Don Cherry today.
  10. I have it lucky. My mailman is a super nice guy and my toddler likes to shadow him as he makes his way to our house. In a year of isolation, a friendly face goes a long way.
  11. After finally getting around to Art Deco a few days ago after it had sat for 2 or 3 years in a pile waiting to be heard, I'm on a Cherry run today. I've listened to Art Deco, Symphony for Improvisers, Brown Rice and now this. I also spun Ornette's To Whom Who Keeps a Record and Charlie Haden's The Montreal Tapes, Vol. 2. Complete Communion and Jim Pepper's Comin' and Goin' have also seen play. While having a large collection means that albums can be neglected, it also makes binges possible.
  12. I recommend this one, which has some of my favorite trading by a drummer:
  13. He studied clarinet in his early years, which is partially why I asked (although I didn't think about the fingering system). IIRC, the soprano can be hard to play in tune, so I can see where he may have been too busy with his other horns to focus on it. Is intonation a problem with the clarinet, too? I'll check that out! Stitt and Patterson were quite the pair.
  14. There is a live recording on Wolfgang's Vault where Stitt sings. I can picture him grabbing any available reed on a gig, so maybe something is circulating.
  15. Did Stitt ever record on soprano or clarinet?
  16. This arrived today. I bought a copy signed by Gerry Wiggins, Andy Simpkins and Paul Humphrey.
  17. I'm listening to an Art Blakey concert from 1973 from Wolfgang's Vault. The band: Carter Jefferson, Eddie Henderson, Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton, Mickey Bass and Ray Mantilla. The kicker? Sonny Stitt guesting on every song and Roy Haynes joining in on 'Night in Tunisia'. Wolfgang's Vault added a $10 credit to members' accounts for Black Friday. I downloaded this and a Giants of Jazz Newport gig. There are so many great concerts up.
