  1. Those of us on a tighter budget care! I do have the original CD. I think I paid about $14 for my copy about 5 years ago - from a German site now out of business. Now out of business because they were selling JRVG's for only $14.
  2. Today, I placed my first order from them: 2 DIW titles from Harold Mabern--"Mabern's Grooveyard" and "Maya With Love." The price for these 2 brand-new Japanese imports--which I believe are currently OOP--was terrific ($14.99 each). When I went back to the site this evening, those 2 titles were no longer listed. I just hope that's because I snagged 'em, and not because the deal really was too good to be true. EDIT: Within minutes of posting this, I received an email from them saying that my order had been processed and would be shipped in full tomorrow. I received this tonight--on a Sunday evening. On the same Sunday I placed the order. Service like that is impossible to resist. Damn Bastards.
  3. In any Houston Oilers nostalgia shop--there must be dozens of those in the UK.
  4. Yes, the rather obscure "Complete O.A. 'Bum' Phillips" set: It was an extremely limited edition and only sold well in southeast Texas.* *directed to fans of American football.
  5. What felser said. Terrific show, and it was great to meet felser and Mrs. f, and spend time with them and Alan. If you get a chance to see Alexander and/or Mabern play, do it! Alexander (and presumably Mabern et al) will be back in Philly for a couple of nights at Chris' Jazz Cafe in February, and Alexander told me after the show that he'll also be appearing at Chris' in March with Pat Martino--that should be a wonderful show, and one I intend not to miss. Incidentally, for those who will be in New York, Alexander and company (including Mabern on piano and Webber on bass again) will be appearing at Dizzy's Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center on November 22-27 with special guest . . . (drum roll) . . . VON FREEMAN. Having seen Freeman and Alexander/Mabern separately over the past few weeks, I know that's a combination not to be missed.
  6. I assume you know about the statue in Austin: No, I didn't but that is COOL!!!! His shadow on the pedestal is part of the statue. Do a Google image search of "Stevie Ray Vaughan" and you'll see several different views of it (to which you can apply your critical photographer's eye ). It says a lot about Austin that it would have a statue of him in such a prominent location. It shows who--and what--is valued in Austin.
  7. I assume you know about the statue in Austin:
  8. That's weird--Mabern shows up on the attachment to the Jazzmatazz Philly Jazz Concerts email I received this morning, but not on the web site. I'm hoping this means that he's a last minute addition--or that Alan just found out about him --and the site hasn't been updated.
  9. Too bad! I hadn't realized until I looked at Alan's site just now that Harold Mabern will be playing with Eric tonight. Hopefully we'll see you at the next Phillyissimo event.
  10. Only if you've written your own individual number inside the booklet.
  11. So now that this is almost upon us, who's going besides felser? Alan? Chalupa? Anybody else? I'm pretty sure I'll be there for at least one of the shows, and maybe both. Felser, let's trade cell numbers by PM so we can hook up after you parachute in.
  12. Allen and I both highly recommend her: She's no Rudy Van Gelder or Malcolm Addey, but she really knows how to handle a recording.
  13. What are you talking about, Allen??? You know that those are all just burns that others have made for you (that's how he resells the same titles over and over).* *Just kidding. And it was raising a million dollars that would have been easy, not burning CD's. In fact, burning tapes proved to be very difficult--except for 18 minutes worth.
  14. Jazzmoose,Jazzmoose. I've seen that hairstyle somewhere... Maybe in a medieval monastery?
  15. Just keep in mind that with box sets, what's important is not how they sound when they're played, but how they look when they're sitting on the shelf! ← Not to mention the part where I sit and stroke them every night as the evening light melts into darkness. Do you think the head print which results from putting them under my pillow reduce their eventual ebay value? I'd answer that, but I'd feel compelled to include a rather off-color comment about the stroking part, and then we'd have to rate this thread XXX.
  16. Thanks! Bookmarked . . . or "Favorited" . . . or whatever.

  18. Yep, they shipped today, despite Sony's announcing that it's recalling all of the CP discs from retailers, and will have a free trade-in program for any that have already been sold.
  19. Allen, you sure it's not Lou Costello to whom you're related?
  20. Speaking of haircuts, this is my preferred style: Although for special events, I'll get it cut a little shorter:
  21. If the photo in that coupon is of your stylist, I'll be flying to Albuquerque for my haircuts from now on.
  22. Female stylist for me. Here's a photo of Jim the last time he went too long without a haircut: And it wasn't even a full moon.
  23. Tokuma is a Japanese CD label. They're probably the owners or license holders of the Venus material. Speaking of which, what's the relationship between Venus/Tokuma and Sunny Side? I've noticed that several Eddie Higgins dates have also been released on Sunny Side, often with different CD titles. Are the Venus releases different masterings?
  24. Where are the bubbles?
