  1. yea I'm wondering about this part.... "30 + tracks never before on CD ".... The thing I find so cool about this.. is that I suspect this is the last time this stuff is going to be reissued... As much as I love OP he's not Miles/Trane/Brubeck in that the record companies will release the same stuff 7 -8 times...
  2. I'm thrilled.... I was really hoping this stuff would come out... Between this and the Mosaic set... No better tribute to the man's passing...
  3. That's exactly what I was hoping... Different time period--the Mosaic is the early-50s trio with Barney Kessel on guitar and no drummer. The box you're getting is the late '50s trio with Ed Thigpen on drums and no guitarist.
  4. I could kiss you Ron... (figuratively....) :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: I'm assuming this is the best case scenario... with none of this duplicating the Mosaic... ? Here's what you're getting (I googled "Oscar Peterson," "The Songbooks," Verve, and the UPC code from the Tower page): http://www.grigorian.com/webstore/view.php?iid=353291 5 discs--a Canadian release by Verve. Looks like a great deal!
  5. okay... I'm sure I'm going to get slammed by someone... but I ordered my set blind... Tower had a ridiculous price... and I figure if it is useless... I'll just send it back.... Whatever it is ... it will be out Tuesday... I've got my fingers crossed.... :excited:
  6. I trust your call on that one... My prob is that the clips on the Mosaic set are REALLY bad... like I can barely hear the music with my sound levels turned all the way up... I don't have that experience with any other set except the Chu....
  7. My concern about the Chu is sound quality...The clips on the Mosaic set IMHO are not very good.... This is one of the strongest sets I have. The whole set is dynamite; tight, swinging, solid. I love it. I agree with others who've said it's among the most essential sessions in all of jazz. Definitely not to be missed. Even if I had the Bluebirds (I don't) I'd still get the Mosaic to be sure I had good transfers on CD as well as LP. And I highly, highly recommend the Chu. I knew the Hamp set was going to be blazing...but the quality of the Chu was like a sucker-punch to the jaw. In a good way.
  8. name doesn't bother me....
  9. I've got the first 3 and you are right... They are excellent... :excited: As much as I like Cdbaby and will continue purchasing there... In general their prices are high (the previous Pepper releases were fine).... I wonder what the cost of this set will be??? My guess is $40-50... In any case... I'm there the day it comes out...
  10. Oh yeah.. I kinda forgot about that one too.... Hmmmm......
  11. nope... sorry Artie Shaw? Any idea what the proposed set would cover?
  12. Artie Shaw boxed set out later this year.... that's all I know...
  13. That is a GREAT photo!!! If I had to pick a few.... I'd probably recommend the Live at the Blue Note boxed set available on Telarc... It's 4 cd's you can probably get for under $30....
  14. so assuming you're right... Are we still in mystery land as to what exactly this set is????
  15. I'm actually beginning to think that is the one.... Well it sure as heck isn't this one then...
  16. Digging Tal Farlow Discs 3 and 4 while trying to get some work done inside...
  17. If I had 2 cents.. I'd suggest considering.... the Tal Farlow since it's heading OOP and if you didn't want to spend that much cash... (Although most of us will tell you it's worth it... I'd vote for the Bobby Hutcherson Select.. My favorite Select... Welcome aboard...
  18. Now that I'm finished with the Hampton... I've got this one going in the car... Disc 1 Yaye! Me too! (Although I've also been listening to the Peggy Lee parts.)
  19. I assume the Bluebird is long gone and OOP????
  20. okay.. I just finished listening to the Lionel Hampton set and here's is what I think... I really liked it.. far more than I expected to....I was very pleasantly surprised by Hamp's vocals.. I'm not a big fan of Pre WWIII jazz but this set worked for me... Almost every tune swung... Only one (I think) version of Flying Home... (I was afraid there would be 5 different takes and 3 alternates... <_< ). What's also interesting about this set.... is who is on it...It's got Johnny Hodges, Cootie Williams, Chu Berry, Ben Webster, Charlie Christian among others.... Another thing that pleasantly surprised me was that most of the sessions are small group sessions not big band... (I prefer small group settings.) Disc 5 was the weakest of the bunch with more poppish tunes and background vocals... The background vocals are IMHO what doomed the Dinah Washington Roulette set... but in this case... they seem to be only on the fifth disc... Overall I was very impressed... This is causing me to reconsider the Chu Berry... Highly recommended if you like this genre... (Or as in my case.. want to get a better taste of it..) The thing I find confusing... is that there seems to be NO discussion of this set on this board... Given the interest in the Chu Berry, Goodman, etc... What's up with the lack of love for Hamp???
  21. Art Pepper Select Discs 1 and 2
  22. Just got it today... and I'm almost finished and it's excellent!!!! I could do without the 1970s disco cover - though....
  23. I'm on Disc 4 in the car.... What's up with the silence about this one??? I'm really enjoying this set... More than I thought I would... I'm digging Hamp's vocals...
  24. Whoops... :blush2:  I misread the title... I thought it was a Top 5 list... (Well the following list is to my Top 3.. of those I own... )
