  1. okay I'm about halfway through disc 3... and I have to admit I did glance at some of the earlier posts... At first listen.... very UNEVEN!!!!!!!!! some tracks exquisitely composed/melodic and some ALL OVER THE PLACE.... I try not to be too pre-disposed to so called "free jazz" but I find the moments of "free jazz" in this set - very poor.... I must say I'm a bit disappointed... Kinda makes me understand why they initially released "the best material".... Very, very uneven.... Now I have to back and read you people's arguments....
  2. I'm almost through Disc 1 and am thoroughly enjoying it... I will say that I think Ron Carter's bass playing is the key to the 1st set.... Holding it all together... I'm trying not to read too much on this thread to pre-dispose me...
  3. okay I bought the Norman Granz Studio Jam Sessions set that came out a few months ago... And I LOVED it...!!!! Can't afford to the do the mega-Verve box yet.... So I was looking around and I find a good price on 2 3CD sets... JATP - The Greatest Jazz Concert in the World... amg link below http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:eguf6j2771l0 or.... JATP Jazz at Santa Monica Civic '72 http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:21jeeaz14xh7 For those of you who have either or both... which would you recommend? Or is there another JATP set you would recommend??? thanks!!!
  4. Well, I think Mosaic is still responsible for producing it, even though it's marketed by Universal/Verve. Mosaic's name is all over the CDs and booklet. It's not like Mosaic licensed the master tapes to Universal, who then remastered and did who knows what to them. In fact, it's the opposite--Universal licensed the tapes to Mosaic, who then remastered them and produced the sets, including the ones Universal then distributes. So even though Mosaic didn't retail the "European" sets, it did produce them and may have answers for these types of questions about those sets. But you still don't have the huevos. I can just see the phone call to Mosaic going well. me: "My Farlow set is messed up" them: "Let us send you a replacement disc" me: "Um... well I bought a European set from Caiman for $50" them: "I guess you should contact Caiman, you cheap @#$%@$%@" I'm not going to do it, you do it... LOL... I hope someone on this board has the .... to call...
  5. thanks jack.... I appreciate the tips.... I'll look for those Koch releases... At least I can take ONE Mosaic set off my list.... phew....
  6. I was thinking about getting the Duke Pearson select set but noticed that Disc 3 is basically all Xmas tunes. It's from an album called Merry Ole Soul. I have no interest in Xmas music... Does anyone have this set? And how good/bad/annoying/positively surprising is Disc 3?? thanks
  7. as someone who is the original poster.. and has over 20 Mosaic sets... I don't have anything to feel "jealous" about.... It's kinda stunning that people don't get my point... Which is I don't have to LIKE that people make profit off of Mosaic sets.... I understand market economics (and the long and obnoxious thread that got started the last time I mentioned this).... It's one thing if you don't agree with my view... (which is fine).... but enough already... geez... that's the last time I bring the E-*** issue....
  8. not really sure I understand your point... Are you saying that there aren't ANY people who buy Mosaics exclusively to make a profit off of them on E-bay???? If you are, I modestly disagree... I do agree with you that 90+% of us who buy Mosaics are jazz collectors/fans... but overall I'm not sure I get your point???
  9. I have less issue with people who "buy" Mosaics from e-bay than people who sell them... I know there must be people out there who buy the Mosaics ONLY to turn a profit on e-bay... thus expoiting Mosaic, the artist and those of us who really want the music... does that help?
  10. I'm having a hard time figuring out which one makes me more ballastic.... Someone I think making $300 million while you are in the joint and leaving prison on a private jet... kinda makes me hate the capitalist system even more... Knowing my luck.. she was probably the person who sold that fool on AAJ the Nat King Cole set for $900...
  11. I'm NOT a fan of the E-Bay thing... I suspect I'm gonna get slammed for this... and I know you didn't ask my opinion... but why not DONATE them to a Public Library or a Community Arts non-profit... Write it off your taxes and some (likely) low-income follks (particularly kids) will have free access to the music??? I don't expect I will EVER sell any of my mosaics but that's what I'd do... Hope I didn't offend....
  12. Cough it up!!!!!!!!!!!! Before you know it... "Last Chance..." Gotta put that tax refund to use somehow, right????
  13. thanks DrJ.... good review... it kinda fits where I'm at... Didn't know much of her stuff, listened to the online samples and managed to fine a couple of mp3's of the Oscar Peterson stuff and BAM!!! I'm totally interested... I foolishly took the plunge... but I suspect I'll be very glad I did especially 5/10 years from now... there are very few Mosaics that I end up regret buying... I'm pretty confident that this will not be one of them.. great summary and thanks
  14. You're a RED SOX Fan in NYC?????????????? Brave Soul!!!!!!!!!!!!
  15. did anyone buy this?? thoughts??? I don't remember seeing a thread about this set...
  16. Fair enough Ron... I'm definitely affected by the "Last Chance/Running Low" (a.k.a the Sky is Falling - My life will be incomplete if I don't grab this - What can of jazz fan am I to NOT have so and so in my collection>>> ;( )... Or the strategic/hopeful prayer of if I wait 5 years, they'll reissue most of this stuff on individual CD's theory.... fyi.. I'm still fighting with Camian for my return Farlow...
  17. okay so we're all doing our taxes.... and some of us will get refunds from the FEDS... so you've got a little extra cash flow... and you decide you want to get a set or two from Mosaic... Which of the following criteria take preference in your decision on what sets to get??? A. Love the artist and have been dying to get the set for a while/will buy anything by this artist/during this period. B. Don't know much about the artist (or the period), but developed a curiousity (e.g., heard a CD, read the review on the board...etc.) and want to check out the set. C. The infamous "Last Chance/Running Low" threat... D. You had the original LP's/CDs' and wanted the complete set with better sound. E. I'll buy 2 and sell one on E-Bay.... F. Something else (please specify!) In my case - I would definitely say in order - A, B and C.... I definitely bought Lee Morgan, Art Blakey, Jackie McLean, Elvin Jones, & Stanley Turrentine boxes for reason A...
  18. I completely do NOT remember this release... Amazon has it coming out in 1999.. 8 Cd's... with Disc 8 composed of mostly interviews... Did anyone pick this up??? Got a review???
  19. I understand what you're saying and to clarify.... I said when I listen to someone in the hard bop vein.... I have a hard time not comparing them to Lee Morgan... I don't consider Clifford Brown a hard bop trumpeter...BeBop yes, hard bop no.... and I don't consider Lee Morgan "better" than Brownie... He's different... I do consider Lee Morgan and Donald Byrd (and a few of others you named... Tommy Turrentine, etc.) in the hard bop vein.... There are other trumpeters that I consider different (and in some ways better) than Lee Morgan... Miles, Dizzy, Brownie.... etc... but for what Lee played... I consider him the best.... Hope that helps clarify things... and no offense taken
  20. With all due respect, I find statements like Lee is the only one for me quite hard to fathom since Donald has such a sweet sound. But beyond that have you listened to Brownie, Blue Mitchell, Tommy Turrentine, Kenny Dorham, Woody Shaw, Carmell Jones or even Freddie Hubbard of the late 50s to early 60s. While I love Lee, there are many, many other brilliant trumpeters. If you made a statement like that you obviously haven't listened to them and I strongly suggest that you do before you make a statement like that again. I also strongly disagree with your views about Pepper. While I have no objection to Gerry Mulligan and enjoy listening to him, for the hard driving hard bop sound of that ear, Pepper is THE MAN! actually I have listened to ALL of those trumpeters... I have plenty of Clifford Brown and the Carmell Jones Select .... I enjoy both of them but IMHO, in the hard bop vein (hate to use that label)... I do place Lee Morgan in a seperate class... (both as a trumpeter and a composer)... Just because I disagree with you doesn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about.... I'm glad you like Pepper... but I still stand by my comments... that if I wanted more baritone I'd still go with the Mulligan set...
  21. I originally had no intention of checking out the Bryd/Pepper Adams set... but after the strong and positive posts... I went ahead and listened to the Mosaic set samples and the one Bryd CD I have (Mustang).... I'm just not there.. for a couple of reasons... 1. When it comes to trumpeters of that vein and time... It's hard for me to listen to anyone who's not Lee Morgan... 2. As for baritone sax... I kinda of enjoy it but if I was going to explore that more I probably would go for the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band set... and I haven't quite got there yet..... 3. And this is one is the most intangilble..... It just doesn't grab me... although the playing by Sonny Red (on Mustang which I'm listening to as I type this... ) is quite interesting....
  22. yea I've got the JJ, Parlan and some of the Chambers (which came out as individual CDs years ago...) Can't quite get into the Pepper Adams/Bryd stuff...
  23. okay since I NEED to stop buying Mosaics... :( and I've got a little cash flow left... I figure this is it for the rest of the year (short of gift cards for my birthday... ) So what should I get...??? It's down to the the Columbia Swing Sessions... (thanks for the reviews Ron S. and if you've got any more thoughts now that you've had it for a few weeks, would love to hear them...) OR... Roy Eldridge set.... (I'm concerned about all the Oscar Peterson on organ,, OR.... and this is where I'm leaning... the Django Reinhardt set.... (since I don't have any Django and its one of the older sets...) Anybody got the Django set???
  24. hmmm.. Shaken, But not Forsaken (from the soundtrack to a scrapped Bond movie) - 11:30 McCoy & Bond.... what a match!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what was the scapped Bond movie???? Please tell me that it wasn't a Bond movie with Sean Connery (not that fraud Bond - Roger Moore)???? Hey on a related question... Art Blakey had a slammin' record called "Soulfinger" (spinoff of Bond movie "Goldfinger") which I've never been able to find on CD.... Here's the info from AMG... "After six years of very consistent personnel (with only a few gradual changes), Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in 1965 were in a state of transition. This particular LP found both Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard making farewell appearances on trumpet, pianist John Hicks and bassist Victor Sproles joining up as short-term members and veteran Lucky Thompson being well featured on both tenor and soprano sax. The music is more relaxed than usual but still contains some of that distinctive Jazz Messengers fire. This rare set is worth searching for." Anybody have it? Know where to get it???
