  1. I think I saw on jazzmaztazz that it's been remastered and reissued later this year.... If that's correct... then this person is an even bigger fool.... see October... http://jazzmatazz.home.att.net/upcomingjazzreleases.html
  2. Sitt... Disc 8... Damn... that Bobo Stenson musta went straight to Last Chance.... Whew! Shit now I have to pay $5000 on e-Bay.... I knew I shoulda got that
  3. Gerald Wilson Disc 4.... :tup this is a really good set.... thanks to the board for cajoling... (I mean - providing me with encouragement to buy thus set.... !! Okay it's my time to plug it.... I think this set is low on people's radar screens.... Check it out....
  4. anybody got the CD discography of the Nat King Cole Set???? thanks
  5. thanks... Nice to know that I haven't lost my mind... (not on this topic anyway..) It's funny... since I don't recall having that reaction to any other altoist... (and it's not even all his alto playing... just select tunes...)
  6. no offense taken... I love Bird... and I've heard a lot of alto... and love it... But as I said... it does seem like on a few tunes... Stitt sounds like he's playing in a really high pitch.... bordering on unpleasant.... Now... jazzbo may be right and it may be my system.... Don't get me wrong... I'm still loving this set...
  7. so I just finished listening to Disc 6.... LOVED IT... and I finally pinned down why I had such a hard time deciding whether or not to buy this set... I LOVE Stitt on tenor but have very, very (not 5 very's but 2) mixed feelings about him on alto. It often seems to my non-musician ears that his alto playing is an acquired taste..... It feels like (to me) he often plays in a very high pitch (or very high notes) almost bordering occassionally on unpleasant.... It seems like its a very angular sound.... He doesn't do it on all tunes... just certain ones... I'm not explaining this very well... But here's a contrast... I consider Jackie McLean's playing very angular but NOT high pitched.... Does anyone else hear this? Am I correct that his alto playing takes an acquired taste??? But am I loving the set..... :tup Feedback?
  8. you all are making me feel better... I had my order in already for the Mulligan + the Brookmeyer Select... and then decided to give another listen to the Cd's I had and decided that the Mulligan was going to be around a lot longer than the Mobley. So I called Mosaic and changed the order.... so I'm due to get both the Mobley and the Brookmeyer select.... :phew: I hope I don't regret this.....
  9. I sense I will be taking your advice jazzbo....
  10. okay... so I'm looking at the Mosaic site and one of the reasons I had ruled out getting this set was I have several Mobley Blue Note Cd's.... the title of the box says the "Complete Blue Note Hank Mobley Fifties Sessions" and the discographical info on their site says the following: "Album index: BLP 5066 The Hank Mobley Quartet (J)CJ28-5128 CD reissue of above BLP 1540 Hank Mobley Sextet BLP 1544 Hank Mobley And His All-Stars BLP 1550 Hank Mobley Quintet B2-46816 CD reissue of above BLP 1560 Hank BLP 1568 Hank Mobley (J) BN 61006 Curtain Call (J) GXF 3066 Poppin' BLP 1574 Peckin' Time B2-81574 CD stereo reissue of above" I have "Peckin' Time and ... His All-Stars' on CD... Is this set worth the other 7 sessions??? I assume there's no new material... just the 9 alternate takes the website mentions?
  11. so as I mentioned... I heard this on another board... Anybody got an "in" over at Mosaic and want to ask, a) if it's true, b) what's on it and c) ETA?
  12. okay now why would I bid on this???? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...4742753253&rd=1 at least he got the starting bid right.....
  13. I heard a rumor on one of the other boards that there was always a plan for 2 Brookmeyer Selects.... Anybody know anything about this? Fact or fiction? What would be on it? ETA?
  14. thank you jazzbo... you hit the magic words... "NOT ESSENTIAL..." phew..... i'm still thinking I'm gonna pass on this one...
  15. finished listening to the set a few weeks ago.... Just great... By far this is my fave Mosaic vocalist set......
  16. had NO interest in this... but I guess YOU PEOPLE forced me to go the Mosaic site and listen to the online samples.... Damn....
  17. Just finished Sonny Stitt Disc 1.... and despite all my bitchin and whining about whether to buy it or not.... WOW.... Disc 1 is great.... :tup more to come....
  18. personally I can't stand the Proper boxes... these kinda sets make me very nervous.... Feels like it's inevitable that the artists (and their estates) are getting COMPLETELY ripped off....
  19. okay update.... after about 3 tracks... it was not working for me.... so away with you.... !!! Had to slip in an Elvin Jones CD (Very Rare! W/ Art Pepper).. to get MY groove back.... (forget Stella.... That chamberjazz stuff was (in the words of super-spy Austin Powers wilting my mojo).... Phew.... thank you Elvin....
  20. I have gone back and forth on this set... When I first heard it ... I hated it.... I was like WHAT THE HELL was that???? Hello.... didn't listen to it for years... and pulled it out about a week ago due to some conversation on this board (about Jim Hall, I think? maybe West Coast jazz?? ).... and liked it much more.... Giving Disc 2 a spin right now.... Hm..... I think i may be going back and forth again...
  21. the good news is.. I'm VERY confident this is going to happen... the bad news is I know nothing else about this set... I'm going to have to rely on you experts here.. to fill me (as to your best guess about what's in the set.... who's on it...and do I want it...?)
  22. Rumor has it... (and I feel reasonably confident with my source that..) other than the Crusaders box in August... one of the next ones will be..... ".....a Buddy Rich small group 50s Verve box coming in November."""" I will not name my sources... and NO it's not Mark Felt....
