  1. I'm a big Elvin fan.... This stuff is really good... And what's really strange about Elvin is that it seems that a lot of his solo stuff is not in print.... or is very hard to find (foreign labels)... The Live at the Lighthouse sessions are great... A fair amount of this set is trio and quartet dates (which is my preferred configuration..) Out of my 25+ sets.. this is in my top 5.... And no one else is going to give a drummer a 8CD set.... This wasn't on my radar screen, but I take it you think it should be. ←
  2. Sidewinder... You DON'T have the Elvin???? AUGHHHH!! You gotta grab it....
  3. I saw the following post on another board and wanted to get your take on the question and my reply..... (I'm deleting the poster's name.) -------- From my perspective... I can't imagine them doing this for a manipulative sales based reason... I think it is related to licensing issues and how many sets they have already printed. For example, if the license for a 5000 set of xxx is due to expire at the end of 2005, and they've already printed 3500 and sold 3100, they might move it to "running low." If this is accurate, they would do this since a) the license is going to expire and b) there's no point in them printing another 1500 (to get the 5000 limit) since they are not going to sell them. Secondly, I think the loyal Mosaic base might catch on to this and would not take it well. It seems to be that we (at least me,) assume that there is a high level of honesty at Mosaic in terms of the production, selling and distribution of the sets... but that's my opinion... I'm not sure how the licensing thing works but that's my guess...
  4. that's a great question!!! Hmmm... to me it seems like one way to figure this out is to do the following... 1) Start with the sets of 5000 (not the 7500 or 10000) 2) look at the copyright date or set # (highly reasonable to assume the some of older sets will go OOP sooner) 3) focus on the popularity of the artist/genre 4) safely eliminate some of the more obscure (pre bebop sets - IMHO those will take a LONG time to go oop.. .but that's just my opinion)... and that might lead me to believe... Hmm.... drum roll please????? Horace Parlan...? maybe Max Roach??? That's my thought... And I don't think the Parlan is going OOP soon. I bought mine a year or two ago and it was #1912 - Copyright date 2000.
  5. Anita O'Day Disc 3... This is a really strong CD...(Hope the rest of the set keeps up with it...)!! I have not been happy with Mosaic vocalist sets..... but so far.....
  6. Anita O'Day Disc 2.... Excellent!!! It's pushing that BAD Dinah set out of my head...
  7. OKAY OKAY YOU WERE RIGHT, RON!!!! Ahh... but commonsense overcame me (at least momentarily.... ) and I did get it!!!! AhA... Another reason to stay away from the evil cluthes of.... E-BAY!!! That was really fast. Hope everyone here pulled the trigger in time! ← And to think that some people (we won't embarrass tranemonk by mentioning him specifically) actually thought that they could wait until this weekend to order. ←
  8. My set #3167.. just arrived... based on the numbers of the sets of those of us who just ordered it... it is going fast.... Will be listening tonight and tomorrow... thanks again Ron
  9. wow that is weird... You should call them and talk to them about it... I usually order via the web but I had a feeling it would be slower than if I called, so I called my order in.... AND.... on a related but different note.... I think this is a board first... (At least in my era).... "obsequious" .... Wow... didn't know I needed to use a dictionary to read the board... Good job!!! Always keeping us on our toes....!
  10. Amen on the Turrentine and the Parlan..both outstanding...!! Methinks the Mobley is the better of the two Complete sets you ordered. However, both sets are highly recommended by me. Uhhh... you still need the Horace Parlan and the Stanley Turrentine boxes. ←
  11. okay... OKAY... I FINALLY called them and ordered mine.... The guy who took the order said he thought the rest would be gone within 2 weeks... Also mentioned that someone called in and ordered 6 (SIX) copies... Smells like an E-BAY Profiteer to me... (NOT to start THAT Debate over again...@!) Anyway... I hope this was a good purchase.... $70 I can swing... (Although I definitely should have saved my money from that god AWFUL Dinah Washington set...) -_-
  12. Whoa! THAT'S fast! ← Okay .. okay... I'll probably place my order today....
  13. just what I was thinking too Ron... Guess I'll have to cough up a couple of more bucks... Just glad it's not a 10CD set... Whew.... I'll probably order mine this weekend... thanks for the news... Sounds like the license is expiring significantly short of the 5000 limit. ←
  14. It's a really good set... There's a few songs which are a dud but overall... a B/B+ .. see the previous threads when I was thinking about it... http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...1&st=&p=entry http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...l=gerald+wilson
  15. Hey Ron.... Are you/Did you get this??? Wasn't high on my radar screen.... but....
  16. for those of us who haven't got the catalog yet....Anything else in there we should know about?
  17. I can relate to that... I've lately gone to the other extreme... where if I have even the strongest hint that I'm going to want this... I'll cough up the $$ to get it... It's led me to some purchases I actually DO regret... (See my Dinah Washington rant... STAY AWAY from that one.. IMHO! ) It's really tough to be really selective... Fortunately through my crazy spendthrift ways.... there aren't ANY more sets I really want.. (Especially since I've already ordered my Jazz Crusaders set... )
  18. all of a sudden.... the fonts have changed.... and I can't tell which posts are new.... or is it just me?
  19. I know I bugged you guys about this before... but since you NOW have the Basie... How does it compare to the Live Roulette set (which is what I have....)???? I'm debating on this one.... Very hesitant... after my last Mosaic experience... the Dinah Washington set... ( I know one has nothing to do with the other - other than in my imagination and wallet....
  20. Well I posted this in another thread... and the beauty of America is we can agree to disagree... Well I'm just about finished listening to this set... and I've got to give my 2 cents... Let me preface this with 2 comments... 1) I have 25 Mosaic sets... so I'm very familar with them and their stuff 2) I had not heard any Dinah before this... (and yes I had read the AMG bio...) Given that... I have to say... this is a DUD! Actually it's kinda painful... Parts of Disc 4 are the only worthwhile tunes... The general reasons to stay away from this set are the following: 1) WAY TOO MANY POORLY DONE sessions with strings. This composes probably 60% of the set. Generally speaking - IMHO, it is very difficult to put together a GOOD jazz record with strings. (It has been done.... ) but NONE of these are on this set.... 2) ALL the tracks (6-12) with a vocal background group are AWFUL. Just bad. 3) Even the few tracks on Disc 4 that are okay... it feels like Dinah is just NOT into it... I had some problems with the Sarah Vaughn box for similar reasons... but there were 2 or 3 CD's in that box that are very good. There's very little in this set worth giving a 2nd look to. Sorry but this is the most disappointing Mosaic I have - by far. At least I've got the Sonny Stitt and Anita O'Day to look forward to on my listening list!!!

  22. Dinah Washington - Disc 4... Finally getting better... Will post a mini-review when I'm done....
  23. It doesn't include enough "Desperate Housewives" commercials? LOL... I guess I'd hold out for another chance to see Nicholette Sheridan drop her towel... excited: Although I must say... I'm more of a Teri Hatcher or Felecity Huffman kinda guy... So let's see T.O. wants more $$$ and more commercials with Nicholette Sheridan... and Tom Brady gets more $$, another ring AND Bridget Moynihan.... HM....
  24. completely agree with Ron S. (It's not the first time nor the last. .I'll agree with my Phillly comprade.... minus one tiny Super Bowl game... Sorry Ron... had to get that one in.... ) Anyway on the Golson/Farmer set... 2 things surprised... I forgot how strong a tenor player Benny was in his prime (or near his prime)... and the Art Farmer ballads are gorgeous... !!! As a result of this set.... I went out and bought a couple of more Art Farmers.... On a related note... 441 records is releasing a lot of stuff from the 1970's (no, it's not electric...) originally from the East Wind label.... I just picked up Art Farmer's "Yesterday's Thoughts" off their "Test of Time" record label... Excellent... here's the URL at cduniverse if you're interested in more recent Art reissues.... http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...&cart=246380519 the same CD at overstock.com is a couple pennies cheaper... http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?pa...prod_id=1411747 okay returning to the topic at hand... as many on this board will know, I've been doing a Mosaic splurge this year... (and last year... and the Farmer/Golson set is high on my list of excellent releases....!!!! So GO FOR IT MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh any BTW Ron.. you're gonna kill me... But what's the scoop with Terrell Owens sissy fit about ANOTHER new contract?? B-)
