  1. I think it was because Mosaic was still mainly LP-oriented at the time (the late 1980s).
  2. If you want to know how many Wilson sets are left, why don't you call Mosaic (203-327-7111) or send them an e-mail (info@mosaicrecords.com).
  3. As far as I know that thread only mentions the number on the set purchased, which we're pretty sure is not an accurate reflection of the number of sets remaining. (For one thing, we don't even know for certain how many more are in this pressing.) I'm not sure what you mean - just click on the link, and you'll see Billyboy's July 8 post about the Wilson set being on the "Last Chance" list; Bright Moment's first post here was a repeat of that info, which is why I posted the Running Low / Last Chance link (click on "Running Low / Last Chance"). Mosaic's Scott told me a while ago that their Wilson licence expires at the end of this year, which is probably why it's on the "Last Chance" list now.

Just listened to this one, and you're right, there's quite a lot of noodling going on. It couldn't keep my attention and I'm not sure it'll grow on me, but I'll give it another shot some time.

Someone better not sneeze very loudly or get into a rage in there...
  6. It was an LP-only set which, if memory serves, contained Hodges' 1951-1955 Verve small-group sessions.
  7. Happy birthday.
  8. This info has already been posted in the Running Low / Last Chance thread on July 8.

    Yes, they do (usually).
  10. Yep, it is - he's "The Genius of the Electric Guitar". The box contains his 1939-1941 recordings with various Benny Goodman bands.
  11. Didn't that box come with a toothbrush to remove the rust?
  12. The online stores I checked either don't carry the set or are selling it for $100+.

    That is a great movie
  14. Well, I like it that he does not round out all the edges - Tafelmusik always sounded too polished for my taste. But if that's what you're looking for ... Hogwood was criticized for not rehearsing properly enough by his double bass player of the time, Barry Guy. But with a project of these dimensions one has to compromise, I'm afraid. Haven't yet heard the Freiburger's version - although they always delivered fine performances when I heard them, live or on record. I have Pinnock's version of the Tageszeiten Symphonies which is nice, but I haven't listened to it for a long time. That's exactly how many Hogwood recordings sound to me, under-rehearsed with rough edges - too much so for my ears. Tafelmusik may be a tad too polished (I agree with you there), but I prefer their approach to Hogwood's.

I prefer the W.C. Handy album.

    Played by?
  17. I sold several sets over the years (replaced many of them with individual albums), and now I've got 18 left (not counting Selects).

Ray Draper's tuba playing is exactly the reason why I sold this album.
  19. Oh...
  20. Do these two albums have many vocals?
  21. I never liked the Hogwood versions; to my ears they sounded too abrasive at times, and I found the playing often not very polished. I prefer the "period performances" by the Hanover Band and Tafelmusik and for the late symphonies, the "big-band" versions by the Concertgebouw Orchestra under Sir Colin Davis.
  22. David French told me his name is Ted Kendall, a John R.T. Davies pupil. He did the Clarence Williams QRS volumes for Frog.
  23. Scott told me today that the Classic Capitol Jazz Sessions will not go out of print for at least another year.
