  1. Yep, it is - he's "The Genius of the Electric Guitar". The box contains his 1939-1941 recordings with various Benny Goodman bands.
  2. Didn't that box come with a toothbrush to remove the rust?
  3. The online stores I checked either don't carry the set or are selling it for $100+.

    That is a great movie
  5. Well, I like it that he does not round out all the edges - Tafelmusik always sounded too polished for my taste. But if that's what you're looking for ... Hogwood was criticized for not rehearsing properly enough by his double bass player of the time, Barry Guy. But with a project of these dimensions one has to compromise, I'm afraid. Haven't yet heard the Freiburger's version - although they always delivered fine performances when I heard them, live or on record. I have Pinnock's version of the Tageszeiten Symphonies which is nice, but I haven't listened to it for a long time. That's exactly how many Hogwood recordings sound to me, under-rehearsed with rough edges - too much so for my ears. Tafelmusik may be a tad too polished (I agree with you there), but I prefer their approach to Hogwood's.

I prefer the W.C. Handy album.

    Played by?
  8. I sold several sets over the years (replaced many of them with individual albums), and now I've got 18 left (not counting Selects).

Ray Draper's tuba playing is exactly the reason why I sold this album.
  10. Oh...
  11. Do these two albums have many vocals?
  12. I never liked the Hogwood versions; to my ears they sounded too abrasive at times, and I found the playing often not very polished. I prefer the "period performances" by the Hanover Band and Tafelmusik and for the late symphonies, the "big-band" versions by the Concertgebouw Orchestra under Sir Colin Davis.
  13. David French told me his name is Ted Kendall, a John R.T. Davies pupil. He did the Clarence Williams QRS volumes for Frog.
  14. Scott told me today that the Classic Capitol Jazz Sessions will not go out of print for at least another year.
  15. Frog's David French just told me it was the late John R.T. Davies. French still has five J.R.T. masters to issue.
  16. He hasn't posted on AAJ for quite some time either. Maybe he's on a long, long vacation...

If you're referring to Other Dimensions in Music: Time Is of the Essence Is beyond Time, it's on AUM Fidelity 013.

Got this one a few months ago and for some reason haven't played it yet; I don't know, something (wish I knew what) is keeping me from listening to it...
  19. I wouldn't, I prefer Getz in quartet settings.
  20. These Italian sites list it: ControTempo (€11.91 or about $14.70 plus shipping), Jazzos.com (€13.30 or about $16.40 plus shipping).
  21. Errr... Amir Bagachelles mentioned DMG first.
  22. I misunderstood both your posts...
  23. Downtown Music Gallery is selling it for $15 plus shipping.
