Trust me... it makes the drink better. Plus, its been around since 1957. Not too much new about Sweet and Low. And I think we're in good company! p.s. Couldn't find any good absinthe.

Alright, here we go. Take your favorite Old-Fashioned glass. 1/2 a pack of sweet & low 3 drops of bitters a spoon+ of mar. cherry juice 1 mar. cherry Mix. 2 oz.+ of bourbon (Old Taylor or something on the same shelf will do fine) fill glass with ice and soda water 1 slice of orange and juice from heel Stir. Cheers. Sip.

'Tis the season for Old-Fashioneds! As a kid, I looked forward to Egg Nog. Now, I look forward to Old-Fashioneds, reserved for the second half of December as a special holiday libation. They just don't taste right any other time of year. Seems that each Old-Fashioned conn has their own variation of the classic recipe. What's yours? Not a fan of the Old-Fashioned? What's your drink of choice this time of year?

I do agree with you there. He really picks up a head of steam about half-way through Hutch's solo, which leads into a drum break, followed by Hill's solo, where Hill really gives of a sense that he is pressed for time. I think this is a real stand-out track for all involved. This is yet another natural fit for Richard Davis' playing as well. The rubato feel of the music really brings it out of him.

I was listening to this again yesterday and I began to wonder how this opening track sounded back in 1964 when the album was originally issued. What an opener, all the way to that unexpected last note! I've had a CD-r of this album since the Hill Mosaic went extinct, and recently bought the RVG. It had been a while since I listened to this album, but I have been listening a lot to Hutcherson's vibes, piano, bass, drums dates lately. This session just blows me away. Hill's compositions (and comping!) move Hutcherson's playing into another league, sounding at times a bit like Dickerson, who Hill recorded with just two years before. They are entirely different musicians to me, but Hutcherson is heard here bridging that gap. I know Andrew Hill had been recorded for about ten years preceeding this album. The two leader dates on Blue Note immediately preceeding Judgement! (Black Fire and Smokestack) give the listener an idea of where Hill's compositions reside, and I think Judgement! fits very well into this established and unique mood that he is able to conjure. Still, I think this date really stands out among Hill's catalog, and Hutcherson's as well. For those of you who've been buying Andrew Hill's album the day they came out since the 1960's, how did this composition sound to you?

I find it interesting that a Frisell thread turned into a Cline thread that turned into a Rowe thread! Gotta love the internet. Knowing now that Allan is not familiar with this sort of music, it does make sense that four hours of solo Cline would fall flat. Then again, I am assuming I know what the performance sounded like. With Cline, I don't even have a guess. I really want to stress to Allan that I meant nothing against him when I told him that four hours of solo Cline just isn't enough to get a good representation of what he can do. My impression of Cline is that it is different from evening to evening. This is esoteric music we are talking about. Esoteric doesn't equal pretentious. Constructive comment though... nice. I wonder how you feel about Roscoe Mitchell SOUND or the NESSA AEC.

Yeah, most of the time, it is two and three guitars doing all of that. Cline is an interesting addition to that band, considering its, and his, past. He can add a real edge to the music that Tweedy seems to have decided to amplify over the past few years. The funny thing is, now all of my friends know who Nels Cline is! :: Allan, the reason I wanted you to talk further about the "bullshit" term was for the very reason that Nathan points out. You saw Nels play for four hours, but it wasn't his main stem! That is why I told you it was not enough to judge the man, much less call "bullshit". I hope you enjoy Interstellar. If not, I don't own that yet, and would also be happy to take it off your hands!

Happy Birthday Jim!

Yeah, I was the one that challenged the "bullshitter" label. I just don't understand that whole line of thought, Cline or not. Who do you think these people are trying to fool? What is their motive? The kind of music we are talking about here doesn't exactly appeal to the masses, and it doesn't exactly pull in the big bucks either. I just can't figure out what people are referring to when they call phony on someone. I'm not trying to hijack a thread here, but I am interested in hearing some people's thoughts on this. :::: :: :::: :: :::: :: I have to thank Nathan for turning me on to REQUIEM FOR JACK KIRBY. I love to listen to vibes recordings, and I am still amazed at Bendian's playing, not to mention the way they approach this music. I still haven't bought Interstellar, but I'm looking forward to the Andrew Hill music.

Apparently, the name Cary was given to 120 out of every 1,000,000 males born in the 1970s. I've only ever met one other. My Dad was named Cary in the 1940s, at which time 100 of every 1,000,000 males born were given the name.

Oh no... sad news.

Thanks fellas! Listening to the Ella disc now. Next up Organissimo! I'll try Big Al's playlist. -
Listen, I saw this group augmented by Sabir Mateen in Boston last year. Whoah. It was supposed to be two sets, but they never stopped. I'm still hoping that Eremite releases this recording some day. I haven't witnessed as much energy music, free jazz, what have you, as many of you have, but this was something else! Never a dull moment. Alvin Fielder. Period. GO.

This is what bbq looks like where I'm from. I had Arthur Bryants this summer. I'm a fan. I also like brisket and think that the KC style is very similar to the Texas style, generally, when compared to the East Coast styles. We don't do much brisket. Virginia and NC have the market cornered if you ask me. Don't make me choose though. Sometimes I'm craving the tomato based sauces, other times I just want that vinegar! Collards and corn puddin, hush puppies. And that's sweet tea by the way. I don't know what else you'd drink with bbq unless the other option is beer. Looks like y'all are just talking about "grillin' out" if you ask me!

What is the backroom?

Ornette also plays a heart-wrenching solo on Joe Henry's SCAR. Brian Blade, Marc Ribot, Meldhau also appear. Great stuff. Thanks Vint!
