"Yo, Miles" - and other Electric Miles tributes
.:.impossible replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
Has anyone heard this? George Schuller Round 'bout Now Round ‘Bout Now: George Schuller Quintet [PSR#J021302] PERSONNEL George Schuller- drums and percussion/composer Donny McCaslin- soprano sax, tenor sax and alto flute Ingrid Jensen- trumpet and flugelhorn Tom Beckham- vibes/composer Dave Ambrosio- bass Matt Darriau- kaval and bass clarinet (guest appearance) Pete McCann- guitar (guest appearance) Sonny Barbato- accordion (guest appearance) TRACKS 1. Sidecar 2. Blackamoor 3. Vat 19 4. Quiet Ruckus 5. Circle in the Round 6. Miles Later 7. Having Big Fun 8. Filles de Kilimanjaro about After four years of regular live performances around New York, the George Schuller Quintet, formerly known as Chump Change, makes its recorded debut, documenting what AllAboutJazz.com calls their "rigorous, unpredictable approach to group improvisation." Round 'Bout Now pays tribute to Miles Davis' pre-fusion transitional period, as documented on records like Circle in the Round, Filles de Kilimanjaro, Water Babies and In a Silent Way. Included are Schuller's arrangements of Miles' "Side Car," "Circle in the Round," and "Filles de Kilimanjaro," as well as original works that use that period as a jumping off point. As in his other groups, Schuller's inclusive compositions and arrangements provide the ideal framework for the improvisational abilities of his talented collaborators. -
Trumpet ideas for Andrew Hill / Jason Moran???

And yes, that new Lanois release is fantastic.

I really like 'Standards' as well, though I haven't seen them perform any of the songs live. Yet! I'd love to see Tortoise live. I've seen John McEntire play drums with The Sea and Cake though, who I love. I am a big Sam Prekop fan. Both of his solo releases are fantastic, especially the first. If you haven't checked out Jeff Parker's Delmark recordings, 'Like Coping' and 'The Relatives', I would highly recommend them to y'all who are more jazz-minded while still interested in the Tortoise aesthetic. His playing has really revealed itself to me over time and I think he can be a fantastic guitar player. While we are on the subject, I would like to mention Rob Mazurek, who also plays with this crowd. I really think his trumpet playing continues to evolve and grow into itself. His intonation and control really catch me by surprise at times. He must have an incredibly strong embochure to get the wide array of sound out of his horn. I have not heard his recordings employing electro-acoustic technique yet, but I am curious. Any other fans?

I couldn't find the thread. Oh well. Anyway, I decided to see how far the other party would take it. They went ahead and sent me a huge check, I told them that I would deposit it, wait for it to clear, then send them their money. I never heard back from them. -
This is incredible. I was digging through my old topics, and came up with a thread on receivers. Mike Fitzgerald and Dmitry had recommended this receiver to me. Of course, I never parted with the dough and still have the same old receiver I've had since my cousin sold it to me. Now that my wife has graduated from school and is gainfully employed again, we will be able to save a little money so that I can look seriously at receivers and speakers again. Hopefully. Hey, better do it before she decides she wants to start having kids, right?!

Ignore it. I posted something similar here this Spring. I'll dig up the link for you. Its a scam. -
I wouldn't buy an Enigma CD for a penny. I'm twenty-eight. No offense of course.

Guitar and the Wind was great. I've heard it a couple of times. On Decca. I'm not sure if this was his leader debut, but 1958. I'd like to hear it again. Not on CD I don't think. Also, on Blue Note with Sheila Jordan... Portrait of Sheila. On CD. Enjoy!

I do.
-
I haven't either. Then again, I really haven't bought much lately. Still holding out on the Bird&Diz and new Organissimo! I feel dirty.

I want em, but I can't afford em... I wish I could help.

Where was there talk of Ray Anthony? My grandfather loves that guy. Ever heard "Dirty Trumpets"? You should see my grandfather dance to that! Love it! I'm not ashamed of any of the music I enjoy.

Yeah, I'm bummed about that. Dance With Death was also in my queue...

Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane

I can help you with that. ← I know. I know. I will be placing an order soon... times is tight and I can't order just one disc from YOU! -
That warm, fuzzy Organissimo package feeling
.:.impossible replied to ghost of miles's topic in Forums Discussion
I haven't been in the mail loop lately, but I always recycle packaging, and I've noticed others have done the same. I think I've gotten more packaging with Pete Bainbridge's info on it than anyone though, and I've only traded with him once or twice! He keeps popping up everywhere! I'd love to get a package some day with my old Charlotte address on it, or my Rhode Island address! -
Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane
.:.impossible replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in Re-issues
I was wondering where this thread was. I've been listening to this disc since its official release and I am absolutely blown away by Epistrophy. I mean, every time I hear Monk and band (pick one) play Epistrophy, I'm blown away, but this band had a unique approach to it, led off by Shadow. Wow. What a setup! All aboard! At times, I don't even realize that Coltrane is playing. Some of the unison sections on the slower tempo tunes, he finds a way to blend into Monk so well. Other times, I feel like he is working up enough velocity to the point where he is moving in place and the rest of the music is moving forward. It puzzled me at first. I was listening and thinking that he wasn't moving with the music, but it only took a few listens to break in on me. Coltrane is in total control of his instrument here, and able to trace through this music with a real sense of familiarity and exhilaration. The bass does seem to be the lowest in the mix, but not terrible at all. Shadow is very up front, along with Monk and Coltrane and I actually like this mix quite a bit. Especially considering Shadow's stripped down drum kit. This is like a stripped down quartet. Monk is having a blast. I'm sure he was a lot of fun to be around that night! Great release. Still looking forward to hearing the Bird&Diz for the first time. -
What's the instrumentation? I remember you trying out quite a few instruments over the past few years. Did you settle on bass?

This may be a shot in the dark, as was the request for recommendations for Harvey Averne, but I am looking for a source for a good nautical wall map of St. John USVI. I can't believe how difficult of a time we are having to locate this map. Any recommendations? Thanks.
-
Hey, anybody that strips his kit down as far as Shadow did in this group deserves praise. His strokes pierce through the music like very few that I have heard. Yes, another more forward-thinking musician behind the kit could have changed this music entirely, and my mind runs wild thinking of the possibilities, but it is pretty f'ing great with Shadow back there.

What's up everybody. I'm looking for some knowledge from those of you with the deep record collections, specifically y'all with the soul and r&b. I haven't had much luck finding any Harvey Averne on CD, but I am looking for his soul side, moreso than his latin side, though any recommendations will be very welcomed! Think "You're No Good"!

Great shots, especially of Joe. I like that group shot too!
