Miles Davis - Complete Live at the Blue Coronet 1969
JETman replied to mjzee's topic in New Releases
What I've heard so far of this set smokes most of the widely circulated lost quintet Euro tour stuff from that Fall! -
Not suprising....he had an absolute stellar year on the mound. He deserves it. He had a GOOD year, but still nowhere near the 1.53 ERA Doc posted in 1985. Now, that was some serious quality pitching! And he was only 21. All this talk about Halladay, Lincecum, CC, Santana makes me laugh. None of them even compares to Seaver, Gibson, Carlton, et. al. Good point. However, I would argue the batters are that much better than they were back in the day. A pitcher has to be much more of a craftsman with his pitches these days. The days of just having one or two pitches [fastball/curve] have been replaced by pitches [sinkers, sliders, spilters, slurves, off speed stuff, etc] that rely on much more movement and placement. No doubt guys like Seaver, Gibson, Carlton, Drysdale, Koufax, Juan Marichal, etc would have been an anchor for any of today's pitching staffs, but they would have a hard time with guys who are a tough out. A straight-up hard thrower gets lit up a lot more often now. Just my two cents... Oh, really?

This release was in the email I received today from True Blue/Mosaic. Carpe Diem!

Is anyone else having a tough time getting into the Dixon box? There's a sameness to the sessions that I find somewhat.......boring. Very dark, brooding music. Some of it works, some of it fails miserably. But I guess it's the journey that matters.

(New) Album of the Year: Michael Formanek on ECM
JETman replied to MomsMobley's topic in New Releases
Music does NOT have to swing in the traditional sense to be worth an investment of time. Those who think so are seriously selling themselves short. -

As you would with any Blue Note album from the 50s and 60s. I do NOT get the bias against ECM. Hang around here long enough and it will drive you batty. Makes no sense! I have and it DOES. -

FYI, it wasn't Jarrett who stopped Eicher from remastering those tapes. Eicher did not feel that they needed remastering, as he feels for most of ECM's holdings.

While I can certainly see your point, I think that ECM has consistently released some of the most interesting music (not necessarily what most diehards would consider jazz) of the last 40 years. -
Those Giuffre sessions were originally Verve and NOT ECM vault possessions.

oh well...it's only rock'n roll but I like it, yes I do... That's fine. Personally, I don't have the time to waste on listening to bad music.

As I've already said, the Stones have been milking the ignorant American music loving public of their money for the last 40 years. Yes, they were great in the 60s and early 70s, but they've been atrocious and grossly mediocre ever since. It doesn't even matter to me anymore that they were once great --- they've long ago used up their free passes with me. Ron Wood on guitar --- oy, 'nuff said.

Rick Fucking Aguilera made a career out of doing it. Are you EVER gonna get over '86? Are you EVER gonna get your head out of your ass? What would my comment possibly have to do with 1986? From 1990 to 1994 Rick Fucking Aguilera made a living retiring three, and only three batters, and never ever coming into a situation with runners ready on base or being asked to get more than three outs. Living proof that on average, a major league pitcher can get three outs before blowing a one, two or three run lead. Living proof that the save is a worthless statistic. Anyone else laughing over the fact that Joba is the first guy out of the bullpen in both games? This was the guy who was supposed to dominate the eighth inning and instead he's one of the scrubs who comes in when they're losing. And the first one at that. I'll bet you Joba is wondering where the hell is mojo went. And that 2007 was a long time ago. Dan, you keep proving yourself to be a Grade A asshole OVER and OVER!

Not really a fair comparison, Lon, since Kiss and Steve Miller were never even nearly as highly regarded as the Stones. As a matter of fact, Miles called Steve Miller a "no-playin' mofo". Kiss is only highly regarded by 12 and 13 year olds who don't know any better. My main issue with the Stones is that they haven't put out what most would call a terrific album in almost 40 years. Yet, they just keep on plodding along with that same old 4/4 party music. The fact that this is what people seem to want does not speak highly for musical tastes and desire for creativity.

Does anyone else here feel that the Rolling Stones may just very well be the most overrated rock and roll band of all time?

Cecil Taylor "2 Ts..." box at a great price on UK Amazon
JETman replied to alppila's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Their customer service is top notch. The only problem is that instead of just sending me a disc number 2, they can only send me the whole box as a replacement. Then I have to return the old box, and be reimbursed for shipping costs. More complicated than it needs to be, I say. -

My set arrived yesterday from Amazon UK. Sadly it contains 2 disc 1's and no disc 2's. -
I spoke to Fred on Monday, and he said that it should be shipping either late this week or early next week.

Just noticed that the excellent duet album "Flux and Change" is included on both the Pieranunzi and Motian boxed sets. Why Cam would do this is anybody's guess!

Is rap tomorrow's jazz?

As a NYC boy myself, I feel totally within my rights to say "Oy, Ve"! -
Thanks for the heads up! I'm keeping all of my options open.

Completely agree. For me, he comes off as a holier-than-thou-I'm-the-smartest-person-in-the-room-blow-hard. Everyone knows that the Enron guys were the smartest people in the room!
