  1. Speaking of meeting up, maybe we could plan going to a festival (e.g. North Sea Jazz)?
  2. The hmv.co.jp website lists quite a few. Some are issues of US titles.
  3. Recall pulls things in from all sorts of sources. I've just found their jazz list at Crazy Jazz -I'll post it. It includes the Blakey - duh - should have looked there first, but this is an elusive label more associated with other genres and it never ocurred to me they would have a listing! The only Recall I own is Soft Machine, Kings of Canterbury. Poor sound, very short measure, outstanding music. These things can be worth a punt but if the Blakey sound had been as bad as the Soft Machine I doubt it would have been worth it. These *can* turn up cheap and the Crazy Jazz price is pretty much a maximum. Here's the list from Crazy Jazz, for interest. 20947 : MONTY ALEXANDER feat. 4. I think you're right - thanks!
  5. What Lon said - the 2006 DSD remaster in the mini-LP sleeve is the way to go. It is a different mastering than the earlier Japanese CD. Unfortunately, it appears to have gone out of print almost immediately after it was released last December, but I guess that's not so surprising since it was billed as a "limited edition". There's some info about the DSD remasters of both Agharta and Pangaea buried in these threads at the Steve Hoffman forum: http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthre...ghlight=agharta http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthre...ghlight=agharta and here's a pic of the disc in question: I try not to be greedy these days, but I'd like to have that!
  6. Success or not, I'd like to see a good remastering of this on general release (i.e. outside Japan). Maybe there is more material that could be added.
  7. Anyone know anything about this live set? I have found a track listing, no personnel details. 1. Pamela 2. Song Is You 3. 1977 AD 4. Webb City 5. How Deep Is The Ocean 6. ETA 7. In Walked Bud 8. La Mode 9. Falafel 10. Oh By The Way 11. Jody 12. Polka Dots And Moonbeams 13. Dr Jekyll
  8. I have this on a cdr. what i thought was interesting was a version of the song Skies Of America which, to me, doesn't sound at all like the released version and I LOVE that version. OK well as long as you didn't pay for it I guess it has some interest!
  9. Thanks for the advice. I think that the remastering dates from 1988, which made me sceptical, and while I don't have any ECM reissues, I have heard quite a few of their new recordings from the 1990s which were sonically disappointing - of their time, maybe, but nothing like close to the standards of the LPs. I guess I'll just have to shell out for this and take the risk. Or maybe re-buy the LP...
  10. What about those new MP3-CDs for €9.99? About 10 hours of music?
  11. There is a track list in this thread. So far no-one has posted the complete discography. [link fixed to remove highlighting]
  12. Well, he's trying to compensate for the drummer and hold the whole thing together.
  13. I used to have this LP - and maybe I still do - but I can't find it and thought I'd buy the CD. However I don't know the date or quality of the remastering. Can anyone comment? Thanks.
  14. To my mind, with Ornette the unlicensed recordings are a big part of the story (as with many major jazz artists). If I were you, I certainly wouldn't miss this. In fact, even though I have the vinyls I'll probably pick one up myself when it appears. BTW, with reference to the original discussion, Get Back is Italian, not Spanish. Yes, I won't miss it. There's mention of the Get Back label on this thread? It's Gambit that's releasing the Hillcrest recordings. Of course, if the Siberia label Jhunip released the recordings, I'd buy it from them. I've resisted purchasing the slew of Ornette bootlegs that have recently been dumped onto the market, although a fought a pretty hard battle for a CD copy of The Fabulous Paul Bley Quintet on ebay a while back (not that expensive in the end). As much as I want to hear the rest of the sessions, if it's on one of the "sordid" labels, I don't think I'm going to be picking it up (as if there weren't enough to listen to as it is). Come to think of it, I don't know of any CD releases of the rest of the Hillcrest material (that is, outside of the stuff on Fabulous)... In the days of vinyl I'm not sure how many enthusiasts used to worry about these issues or were even aware of them. We have to 'blame' Bley himself for the licensing irregularity of the short-lived IAI title (which, you're right, has never been on CD). I'm not sure what the issues were on the related America release. Of the various Ornette boots which I have heard, NO ONE should spend a cent on Stating the Case - a total rip off. Unpresentable sound by any standard, and side two is the same as side one, minus one track for the sake of 'disguising' this fact visually.
  15. You heard me. Got this one at CD Spins on Monday for 7.99. Does anyone have a list of TOCJ 54xx and related titles? From 1992 LP-like presence and realism to 2007 AM sound. Why oh why oh why etc.
  16. 169 pages by now... (still everything marked as sold out...) Looks like an error, doesn't it? With so many pages who can even browse through them properly?

  18. As people may be aware, Ornette played tenor for many years before moving to alto. This casts his tenor outings in a slightly different light.
  19. Now that's a Mingus title! You're right! I wonder if Ornette and Mingus would have been compatible. If so, they could have made some interesting music together — Mingus playing piano on his bass and Ornette playing bongos on his alto saxophone. In fact Ornette played with Mingus at Newport one time- there is a photo but AFAIK no recording.
  20. Still a number of (lesser known?) Hatology's going for a few euros each.
  21. This is the LP "European Concert" released on Unique Jazz (UJ 013). There are five tracks, less than forty minutes length. Recorded in Berlin and proabably different from the Belgrade concert (which I don't have but is usually listed separately, but has the same track titles). Fair sound (for a boot), very worthwhile music.
  22. Hey, I love this thread! As a one time OC-reverer I have often questioned his performance and recording strategy, and I also wonder about what happens when he DOES turn up (sometimes unlistenable balance) and also the desire to EVOLVE his art and work with others.
  23. I like it that we can pick up a conversation from four years ago and just carry on.
  24. You and me both. Same here. Shouldn't there be a statute of limitations on April Fool's jokes? Like, only on April 1st for fuck's sake.
