  1. Pete LaRoca, Baghdad Oh, wait...
  2. I remembered there was a thread on this... I'd forgotten that I started it! I did buy the LP, as it happens. 'Quite good' rather than 'best' would sum it up for me. The LP mix is not too great (at least on my Arista copy) and I wonder how well it will come up on the eventual CD - I have a few doubts. Does anyone have further info about the CD release?
  3. I'm watching it on DVD. It's a joint BBC/HBO production. Guy Thanks Guy - I'll see what I can find out. MG It has been on TV here and it might be being repeated.
  4. Had it (La Placita) sold it. Rare, so I wish I'd auctioned it! Annoying guitar, generally thin and amateurish mix?
  5. If anybody is interested in the BL Sound Archive and what it is trying to do, it has a website here.
  6. Speaking of 2001, when are we going to see some action from those boys on Gillespie/Nelson/Rich. Come on gents, I'm waiting...
  7. You are probably refering to this book: Le Jazz est-il encore possible?. (Is Jazz Still Possible?). The author turned away jazz criticism and - unless he retired recently - is now a successful book editor! That certainly looks like it... but I had a feeling there was another... I think perhaps I am just misremembering the publisher (which I thought was Galilee or Editions de Minuit - excuse lack of accents).
  8. Hey that CD of Evan Parker in Atlanta is a (still available) classic! [there's a book by a French guy on the end of jazz - anybody remember what it is called? I don't think there was a translation]
  9. First, I'm a convert to the Elvin set, having thought based on what I had heard that I didn't need it. In a different way than the Andrew Hill, but in some ways on a par, it is a Mosaic modern jazz classic. Which brings me to my question - what could replace Elvin in the Mosaic lists? The demise of the Andrew Hill set left a huge gap. The absence of Elvin leaves the later sixties and after wide open. I know there are several post-bop Selects, but I am trying to work out what big chunk of post-hard bop material is up there begging for Mosaic treatment. I know we all mention the Braxton Arista from time to time (and I am definitely with that even though I have it all). Any other candidates?
  10. IMHO, it was a lame attempt to get bucks for decent musicians. No reason to pay for it. Really? Have you played it again in recent years? I think it's quite good. Have not listened in recent years. It could be nice but the feeling of "missed opportunity" lingers. I was hearing all these folks live at the time and the record seemed a huge compromise. I'm certain the musicians didn't embarrassed themselves and delivered a decent project. I had the CD and sold it on (probably to someone on this board). It is one of those that you want to hear, but once you have heard it you find yourself able to let go.
  11. Seems in the case of the British Library that they could get the resources to preserve this stuff if they had the legal right to do so. I think they are looking for a modification of copyright law with reference to archiving. It may be, with respect to recorded music and film, that copyright holders take steps to preserve the physical integrity of their archives, but it seems that other material is not so preserved and will depend on library work to preserve it. I dare say that applies to much of what they have in the archive at the BL.
  12. see here
  13. I had a similar experience with John Peel (the influential indie DJ). Result: tiny audience for my band, and I missed seeing John Peel! Those were the days.
  14. Mine arrived a few hours ago... but I wasn't here... Just to recap: ordered Monday afternoon, arrived Wednesday afternoon ... in UK!
  15. What happened to Chaney? Last I recall he was discussing Guerrilla Mosaics and started a thread with a soundclip which was subsequently deleted. What gives?
  16. Not good. It also makes you wonder how they might replace defective disks if there is - as in this case - not a single copy of a particular disk left.
  17. John T I was being a bit humorous... that said, I think that Elvin, like others of the Coltrane circle after his death, struggled to find a music that was valid and necessary.
  18. That is really true. The Lighthouse set had already been out on CD in the same masterings - why not just let it have a life of its own? A six CD set would be a more economical proposition. Also I agree with Jim and Chuck's comments - there is some flawed music here and I think anyone who has missed this needn't worry - even if this music offers certain pleasures it strikes me as much more OF its period than transcending it. And Chuck's right about the 'name': if you thought of most of these sides as Joe Farrell plus congas you wouldn't go near them!
  19. Well I cut that fine...
  20. I just went for one, so...
  21. I've got the Prestige box of this. The quality is pretty poor. Jazz View CDs seem always to be (poor) LP dubs and are to be avoided, IMO. I wish there was a good CD version of this.
  22. This UK amazon seller routineley sets prices over £100 ($200) for in print CDs. What sense does it make?
  23. Well a common thing is to strap it to the adjacent finger - at least while you are not playing you could maybe do so?
  24. Uhhhh... you might not care for every track on this album. 'Little Betty Hen' is a rock blues complete with guitar scribble; 'untitled' is pretty whack (improv percussion and chant). Probably would make a well filled single CD with a couple tracks missed out; as it is I suspect we'll see an under-filled double with question marks against a couple of the inlcusions. Or maybe there is more that never got on the LP (doesn't seem so).
