  1. http://www.amazon.com/Sleeper-Tokyo-April-16-1979/dp/B0085G0DH6/ref=pd_sim_m_6 Standard Jarrett/ECM-not-everyone's-cup advisory but I'm excited for this. Looks like they spread waaaay out on these tracks, and seeing how they can ride a groove like no one's business I'm interested to hear the results. This is from the same tour as Personal Mountains.
  2. I have two lps in the "Father of Modern Jazz" box set with the same crew except for Buck, and they're possibly "reigned" in but it seems all want to play this way, with elegance and beauty. I love 'em! Yeah, I mean, how do you not love those guys, right? I hear ya'. But on this particualr album, there's a few cuts where they loosen up and play...uh, looser, and the rest sound kind of..."produced", maybe with an eye towards radioplay. 1968 had to have been a weird time to make a major label record like this. I know it's unreasonable to look at Milt Gabler & a date like this in 1968 and expect a Commodore-type 1940 thing, but still...not a bad record at all, really, just would have preferred just a teence a bit more looseness overall. What is this 5 record Hines set, btw? What label was it released on? Is it all live stuff? I might need to go a-huntin' for that one! MF Distribution. 3 LPs of solo, 2 quartet. I passed the damn thing up a million times for $10 at my old record store, fool that I am.
  3. John Lloyd's Four and Five on Hatology is also quite nice.
  4. 1. The Bley is great 2. Performance 1979, Charlie Parker, Koln 3. The Way, Songs 4. Way good Gotta put in a good word for the McPhee/Plimley/Ellis, Cecil Taylor, Murray, Carter-Bradford, Nagl/Big 4, and of course The Dark Tree. I also like the Graewe, Konrad, Wallin and Oliveros titles.
  5. Yeah, the Blackhawk box is OOP and quite pricey now. The two 2xCD sets can still be had for normal costs.
  6. Sounds like a nice proposition!
  7. Yep. Steve Lacy at Unity Temple has it bad, too.
  8. If I'm not mistaken the writers of the film version of THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY inserted jazz into the narrative. Matt Damon does a pretty cringey Chet Baker impersonation and carries around Bird and Dizzy Savoy 12"ers, alongside Chet Baker Sings and, erm, Complete Communion (the story is set in the mid-to-late fifties).
  9. My fears here were not unfounded http://www.hathut.com/media/HatHut_LimitedShareholderPlan.pdf
  10. Anyways, I agree re: Jones-Lewis, not that I don't enjoy the band on some level.
  11. Good record, but my least favorite of the 1963-4 live albums for no fault of Sam's. The others are just too damn good.
  12. Love that Endangered Blood record, will take a chance on the others given the personnel. Send 'em on over!
  13. Doesn't bother me either, though I prefer discreet. I have a reissue of MUSIC FOR PRANCING that has an address label and a small note saying which store the LP was purchased at and the date. I think that's neat.
  14. I'm in the market for this album but I'm wondering which edition to get, the older CD with the drawing (by DSM?) or the newer Verve Original with the photo of Stan. I seem to recall the newer edition having an edge for some reason or another, but perhaps I'm imagining that.

  16. An all-time favorite!
  17. Also now in stock at Jazz Loft for $79.95, just $5 more than at DG.
  18. Currently spinning Threadgill's Rag Bush & All and When Was That which I just grabbed off eBay for 99 cents.
  19. Never had a problem like that. Mostly I'm just disillusioned by people's absurd expectations for Buy It Now items. When I find the same items up for auction I usually walk away with them handily for about 1/10th the price.
  20. Rashied says in AS SERIOUS AS YOUR LIFE that he was not the most humble young man in those days. That couldn't help with a guy like Elvin. As for Alice, I'm with Jim. I trust the great artists to take me where they will; this isn't Burger King, you don't make it your way.
  21. I have this on LP, too. Great album; I love all of Surman's ECM work.
  22. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mobileweb/2012/07/08/lionel-batiste-dead-dies-treme-brass-band_n_1657509.html?icid=hp_entertainment_top_art Sad news. He was featured in both Treme and Spike Lee's documentaries.
  23. Good lord! If their Cecil Taylor LP is any indication, what will this cost, $500? Kind of a pity that most fans won't be able to enjoy this music. I don't want to jump to conclusions but really, there's no way this will be remotely affordable. Kinda wish they'd save the music for a company regular folks can actually patronize...
  24. They also put out a 3xLP of the Sun Ra Horo sessions.
  25. Due to financial difficulties I had to sell all 15 of my black boxes and all 20+ of my Selects. It was incredibly painful but I've been slowly buying back some of the individual LPs I lost and have generally decided to steer clear of buying Mosaics in the future as I feel I simply have no business buying or owning something so expensive given my situation. That said, I'm buying this. If its the only Mosaic I ever own again I'm fine with that.
