  1. Very cool, never seen the original tape issue before.
  2. So the vinyl only has 3 of the 6 tracks?
  3. Do appreciate the offer, but prefer the CD in this case 👍
  4. Wondering if anyone has a copy of the Gitanes/EmArcy issue of this CD they'd be willing to sell:
  5. Yep. I wasn't aware of those earlier issues, but I can see the logic in your thinking. I think I'm set with this; still plenty of Symphony Sid!
  6. I'm listening to the 4xCD Savoy box now!
  7. The next 3 titles are shipping from DG now: Peter Kowald Quintet (no extra material here), Phil Wachsmann - Writing In Water, and Sun Ra - Solar Myth Approach 1 & 2. Interesting note here about that last one: As with many Arkestra records, the information on these gatefold packages was dubious at best. Here they appear with corrected lineups and dates, showing that the music actually stretches back to the early 1960s, but was assembled into a beautiful chronological mosaic that serves as a gripping survey of early-post-Chicago Ra. It's an ideal way to start listening to his music, and for his fans absolutely essential items in the gargantuan discography. These LPs have been reissued a number of times since BYG/Actuel folded, and with each new batch the fidelity has diminished, so that they've been a pale shadow of the original recordings. For the first time, the sound has been lovingly restored to a previously unimagined level of omniversal fidelity, and one track ("Scene 1 Take 1") that was mastered at the wrong speed on the original – perhaps a Ra idea, perhaps just a disconnect between the producers and the composer – has been included as a bonus track remastered at the corrected speed. Packaged in the glorious original LP designs, with a definitive essay by Irwin Chusid, this is The Solar-Myth Approach as it was meant to be experienced.
  8. A huge Second on Seabrook/Cooper-Moore/Cleaver - Exultations. It's been on constant rotation over here, one of the more exciting releases of late.
  9. Amazon is also a terrible deal for buyers because they will not combine shipping on multiple orders from the same Marketplace seller, so you're paying $4 extra per CD. Trash.
  10. I buy CDs all the time; it's by far my preferred mode of listening to jazz. Due to space constraints, I've had to recently jettison all my non-jazz CDs, so all other music gets purchased on vinyl. I hate downloads. I'm also always looking to fill in gaps, so I'd happily take a look at the list.
  11. I think about the Joe Daley box he was working on all the time. Still hope someone can take the reins on that one day, but I'm not counting on it.
  12. Just saw that Discus has reissued this very rare 1977 Oxley Incus LP on CD. With shipping the total delivered to the US was just under $20. https://discus-music.co.uk/catalogue-mobile/dis99-detail
  13. His playing on The Quest in particular was mind-altering for me early in my jazz listening. To this day one of the great jazz performances ever.
  14. As a favor to you I will buy the new one alongside Fantastic Ms. 10 and compare. I was underwhelmed by the 3rd ECM quintet album after loving the first 2 acoustic ones, and the live quintet stuff I saw on youtube didn’t change my mind, but perhaps I just need to squeegee my ears some; it’s been necessary before!
  15. I personally like the Sommer one best. I like the first one with Bennink (haven’t heard the more recent one), but that is a ymmv situation. I need to pull out that Taktlos set soon. Great varied program, but the trio with Léandre & Lovens is one of the all-time great ripping chunks of free improv.
  16. Glad to see the group back to a quartet! I will check this out for sure, not a fan of the guitar.
  17. The only one I've owned is the Don Ellis, which is not a CDR. But there could be issues with re-pressings. Hopefully not.
  18. FYI Mosaic is selling copies of the Mighty Quinn RE of Roy Ayers' great West Coast Vibes for 11.98. For whatever reason this is a very hard to find CD if you run a check through Discogs/ebay/Amazon/etc. Great opportunity. http://www.mosaicrecords.com/prodinfo.asp?number=AYERR01
  19. I spent some time with these two recently, both very strong sessions. I also don't pay a ton of attention of this label, lots of watered-down music coming through. I would also recommend this fairly recent one:
  20. Aside from the long OOP Mosaic Selects, Charles Tolliver's 60s & 70s music was only released on CD overseas (on Black Lion, Charly, Bellaphon, and Bomba) in a rather patchwork form of re-titlings and compilations (Paper Man of course not being released at all until recently). Even today those discs are very hard to get a hold of. Which is to say nothing of the Germany-only Live In Berlin albums and general lack of new recording opportunities during the 80s-00s. Cuscuna did his part but it still astounds me generally unavailable one of our great living jazz musician's work has been in his own country.
  21. I really like Nigel Coombes/Steve Beresford - White Strings Attached (reissued by Emanem) and Wachsmann/Oxley/Fuchs/Metcalfe - The Glider & The Grinder, in addition to the aforementioned Groups In Front of People LPs.
  22. NB direct on ebay is definitely a great option but everything international is a bit iffier these days unfortunately.
  23. it’s unfortunate that these NB CDs are so difficult to obtain in the US. Squidco and DG get them occasionally but they sell out immediately and are not often restocked. I was very lucky to grab all 3 a couple months ago, still need to work all the way through them. As for the question of later Rivers, I find a lot to love in Configuration, a ‘96 session w/ Akchoté, Thollot, Paul Rogers, and Tony Hymas that veers between some very beautiful straight ahead playing and freer material. Also love Portrait and the All-Stars discs. One more shoutout for Celebration, a very deep effort from his working trio.
  24. Nice to see Bead finally getting some love. Excited to hear that Stabbins LP, which I'm not familiar with. A Groups In Front of People 2fer RE would be awesome.
