Charlie Parker on CD - Where to go from here?
colinmce replied to colinmce's topic in Recommendations
Definitely have this! -
I'm sure this thread has been done before, but if you'll humor me, I'm wondering if there are any particularly notable Bird CDs you'd recommend for someone such as myself who already has the following: Label Box Sets: -Complete Savoy & Dial (official Savoy and Stash issues, respectively) -Complete Verve (official issue) -Complete Live Performances on Savoy (official issue) Blue Note Issue CDs: -Washington Concerts -Bird At The Hi Hat -Bird & Diz At Carnegie Hall -Charlie Parker At Storyville Various other: -The Quintet - Jazz At Massey Hall -Charlie Parker (Bird At St. Nicks/Bird On 52nd Street) -Live Performances (ESP) -Rara Avis (Stash) -Bird You Never Heard (Stash) -Town Hall, New York City June 22, 1945 (Uptown) Not looking to go the total completist route, but always open to having more to hear.

Listed under Upcoming Releases at ezz-thetics: (Hopefully the albums will be presented in their entirety, of course)

As respectfully as I can put it, I have not found a way to understand what he’s trying to accomplish with his music (if anything) in quite a long time and have pretty much given up on following his work, so .... fine with me. Morally this is reprehensible but musically it sounds absolutely dreadful as well.

RIP. For my money, Tones For Jones Bones & Now He Sings, Now He Sobs are two of the absolute best jazz records ever made, and just the tip of the iceberg in terms of his accomplishments.
-
I think you'll be quite pleased. I've only had a chance to listen to it a couple times but there's lots to hear on this one.

This should be a good one: https://www.dustygroove.com/item/974010?sf=joe+mcphee&incl_oos=1&incl_cs=1&kwfilter=joe+mcphee&sort_order=artist

Squidco just got theirs yesterday, so I would imagine DG’s will show soon. Definitely an unusually long lag this time around. I scooped up the Rivers, RED Trio, & Takayanagi discs + the new Blasé/Yasmina on ezz-thetics before they go OOS.

Some other sideman dates I enjoy: -David Egyes - Crossroads -Khan Jamal - Infinity & Black Awareness -Dwight James - Inner Heat The co-leader CIMP disc Philadelphia Spirit In New York is pretty excellent as well A little more outside the jazz realm, I also love the Garret List & Napoleon Cherry (Cool Waters) records he plays on. Very cool and interesting player, but a bit of a challenge to collect at times.

Listed as Upcoming at Squidco: Cecil Taylor Quintet featuring Harri Sjostrom, Tristan Honsinger, Teppo Hauta-aho, Paul Lovens: Lifting The Bandstand Listen! Foundation (Fundacja Sluchaj!) Very happy to finally see one of Cecil’s groups get an archival release (and especially this one!); since his passing, only solos & duos with Oxley and Dixon have seen release.

Andrew Cyrille - The Declaration of Musical Independence -
This latest batch sure is taking its time making its way stateside.

A massive loss. What a legacy. RIP.

Pretty disappointing to hear about the editing and all the rest. And since we're bitching, it just seems like there were problems all around with this one. I had initially planned to order the CD from Amazon, but it was immediately out of stock, so I placed an order with a record store. A couple weeks went by without a shipping notice, and when I inquired, they said all their copies came with 2 of the same disc and they were waiting on replacements, something I hear happened with the LPs as well. I'll be happy to have it when I finally do get it, but this seems like a misstep all around. I'd call it a rush job, but they announced this almost annoyingly far in advance.

I'm definitely a fan of his solo and sax ensemble works, but I'm hoping some of those loft-era jazz groups are represented as well.

My assumption is that is has something to do with this. Very interested to get some more details. https://wp.nyu.edu/library-hemphill_papers/

I would agree with this. Lots of 1970s Tapscott music available, not so much from the 90s. I personally also find it musically more interesting as well.

Noticed this in a New World ad in the new Point of Departure. Very very intriguing! No information on the NW site yet that I can see.

My favorites: Tomeka Reid/Joe Morris - Combinations; one of my 2 or 3 favorite pure improv records from this year. Really tremendous. Roscoe Mitchell - No Side Effects; my favorite of the RM titles on RA that I've heard; I find some of his other output for the label to be a little unremarkable Joshua Abrams Quartet - Unknown Known; incredible session with David Boykins, Jason Adasiewicz, and Frank Rosaly. In the pocket at all times, just awesome. Nicole Mitchell's Sonic Projections - Secret Escapades of Velvet Anderson; makes a fine pairing with the Abrams above, very spiritual Jacques Coursil/Alan Silva - FreeJazzArt; a rare-ish chance to hear two masters at work in their advanced years, exceptional Robert Dick/Tiffany Chang - Raise The River; wide-ranging flute & percussion duets Tarbaby + Oliver Lake & Marc Ducret - Fanon; passionate and fascinating Jeff Albert Instigation Quartet - The Tree On The Mound; fun out quartet date elevated by the great Kidd Jordan, who you often don't get to hear with another horn The Turbine + Cappozzo/Garcin/Wm Parker - Entropy/Enthalpy; 2 bass/2 drums group (thankfully imo) expanded any of the Tiger Trio dates, if you enjoy any of the players (which I do quite a bit, esp. Myra Melford) Also hard to go wrong with any of the Steve Swell, Rob Brown, Jemeel Moondoc, or Matthew Shipp dates. There are still plenty others I need to hear as well.

He contributed memorably to Ran Blake's Chris Connor and Claude Chabrol albums on Impulse!, which were both recorded in 2012 and released a couple years later. And of course he plays wonderfully on The Short Life of Barbara Monk and That Certain Feeling, also with Blake. I especially enjoy his sideman appearances on Mal Waldron's two excellent, underrated Soul Note albums The Crowd Scene and Where Are You (both recorded in 1989). I don't recall him having a lot of solo space on Lacy's Vespers or Beaver Harris' A Well Kept Secret, but they're both very good records he plays on all the same.

Very much looking forward to this: https://sluchaj.bandcamp.com/album/the-great-tone-has-no-sound
