  1. I dropped in to Amoeba in SF (Haight) back in 2017 on our US trip Never seen such a big record/CD store - picked up a handful of CDs but the cherry on top was the Shorty Rogers "Modern Sounds" Capitol box set (3 x 7" 45s) in beautiful condition - $7.99!! IMHO a bargain just for the cover alone
  2. loved Tom & Television - played Marquee Moon today RIP
  3. don't get me started when it comes to Asendia & International shipping (Australia) - total cockup for my last two orders (Hubbard/Tristano most recently & earlier Black & White) - probably going to happen to the JATP order too
  4. Received the below message this morning - anyone else get the same ? Had to reorder due to cc expiry - hope I don't get charged for 2 sets Thank you very much for the order. The sets are ready to ship and we proceeded to charge your credit card. Unfortunately the charge window expired after 30 days and we are unable to charge your card. Entirely our fault and our sincere apologies. For security purposes we are unable to enter your card data and charge. Therefore we are leaving the preorder sale price on the site and request that you reenter your order. https://www.mosaicrecords.com/product/classic-jazz-at-the-philharmonic-jam-sessions-1950-1957-mosaic-records/ Apologies for the inconvenience and thank you very much for your support. 5. About the Author Richard Koloda has a master's degree in Musicology from Cleveland State University (having written a thesis on the piano music of Frederic Rzewski). He was a contributor to the critically acclaimed documentary My Name Is Albert Ayler by Swedish filmmaker Kasper Collin and was a consultant on Revenant Records' ten-CD retrospective of Ayler, which has been called 'the Sistine Chapel of box sets'. Richard lives in Wayland, Ohio, where he practices law. When he is not in court, he is working on his second book (not about music).
  6. yep, it's my fav Zappa period - so, no original Waka & Wazoo standard recordings then (unless you have Blue Ray)
  7. back to the Waka/Wazoo box I presume the 5th "Blue Ray" disc can be also played in a standard CD player
  8. wonderful octet session with Osborne, Skidmore & Surman
  9. I had never heard of the '66 Helsinki Recordings - I managed to get the Ayler Rarities tracks from UBU a few years back - contained any previously unreleased material (in the Ayler "Tree") up till (IIRC) the Revenant Box (that removed many of the previously unreleased tracks) - as of 2022 all that was left in the can was the Copenhagen concert (Nov 11, 1966) & a single Burton Greene live Slugs track that may not have even included AA. No mention of Helsinki.
  10. been eyeing off this set since I received their promo email a few weeks back. 150 euros is a bit steep for a 5LP set especially when there are only two previously unreleased longish tracks - been buying the CDs over the past 3 years anyway. Probably not worth it for me.
  11. AFAIK FZ has been cancelled in the eyes of the younger generations (millenials & more recent) due to his homophobic & misogynist lyrics - that's what I'm told by my children (27, 28 & 30) who were well versed in his music while growing up - they still like it & accept his faults great release if you're a Twardzik fan
  12. His general psychological state & health (including mental) issues would have been a major contributing factor from what I've read
  13. The 72 (Village Vanguard) & 75 (Newport Festival, Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center, NYC) recordings were released in 2009 on a double CD spanish boot plus I sourced a FLAC of the 72 concert a few years ago - I'm surprised no one has officially released these - the SQ sounds pretty good to me - I've heard much much worse. When Robin Kelly knew (I've communicated with him a number of times) I had these recordings he asked for a copy (he didn't have this music himself) but it was for TS Monk who played on both dates and was very very interested in hearing it, again!! I Was happy to oblige & he sent me some unreleased Monk in return.
  14. Did anyone order the Tippett double LP "How Long This Time" - i missed out on the CD version so had to opt for the vinyl I ordered in mid November but havn't received any shipping details - IIRC it was supposed to have been shipped round December 23 - have messaged Matt Parker https://britishprogressivejazz.com/album/how-long-this-time-live-1970
  15. just pre-ordered (credit card) & got an email invoice within a few minutes. Also a pending charge has appeared in my bank account
  16. Currently listening to this release & enjoying, especially Detroit Contemporary 4 - this looks like the only (so far) released recordings of this lineup Charles Moore cnt/Stanley Cowell p/John Dana b/Danny Spencer dm Anyone know who was actually in the Paradise Theatre Orchestra - I know some of the Blackbyrds (Toney & Killgo) were present Need to look into Lyman Woodard a bit more - is his Strata East release "Lyman Woodard Organisation" worth getting?
  17. Wow!! I always thought they were legit - have been buying their material (CDs) since the early 90s the bootlegging probably relates to the Revisited series (11xx) - admittedly I have been perplexed by the Blue Note & OJC inclusions https://www.discogs.com/label/171702-REVISITED
  18. Just received a batch of the Hat Hut ezz-thetics Revisited CDs (via Tommy's Jazz & Squidco) This live Horace S Quintet (64-66) is absolutely superb (including SQ) from a stellar period in his career. It's basically a compilation of live tracks that Horace released on the Emerald label (one LP & one CD), which was a subsidiary of Silveto. The whole of Emerald CD 1003 (Half Note) is replicated (sans the Alan Grant Intro) & two tracks (of 4) from the Emerald LP 1001 (Cork & Bib) making 80 minutes in toto. For Joe Henderson fans it's a real bonus - standout track imho is The Tokyo Blues (Cork & Bib) running in at 15 minutes. BTW the Emerald CD was rereleased on the 32 Jazz label, titled Re-Entry. Looks like the two Cork & Bib titles are on CD for the first time.
  19. R.I.P. John Pochee Legendary Australian jazz drummer passed (82) earlier this month - he had been part of the australian jazz scene since the late 50s John with fellow journeyman Bernie McGann (alto) played together on many sessions (early 60s to mid 2000s). He also formed/organised the large group Ten Part Invention https://www.smh.com.au/national/the-heart-that-shone-through-the-music-20221122-p5c0ab.html Sydney Morning Herald link above
  20. my first Bechets were the Australian World Record Club pressings (1975) of both these LPs
  21. One of my fav compilations is the 14CD set released by Universal France in 2011 "The Complete American Masters, 1931-53" (it does include "Days Beyond Recall"). I remember it being quite affordable/cheap at the time. Excellent transfers
  22. anyone listened to the Jazz In Britain Tubby Hayes 2CD set "Live At The Hopbine '69?" Track 4 on disc 2, "Walkin" with outro/band intro appears to be duplicated ie tagged onto the end of track 3 "Vierd Blues" On both the CD release plus the download

    Fip Ricard

The Sun Ra (Sonny Blount) 14CD set "Eternal Myth" has at least 24 tracks covering Flip with the Red Saunders Orchestra (Sonny as arranger) from the early 50s
  24. also missed the CD release but opted for the vinyl (late Dec release) & have received an immediate download - AIFF's onto a CDr & the music is stunning
  25. unfortunately Martin has no more copies of his recent rerelease of Karyobin & is not considering reissue at this stage. Contacted him earlier this year regarding this CD. http://www.emanemdisc.com/cd-stevens.html#5046
