  1. Thanks for the clarification & assurance - my Hipp box certainly appears to be a labour of love. The MOD box is another I have been very keen on but have been hesitant
  2. I was under the impression that these sets are not actually part of the Bear Family (releases) but they just distribute the label which has a variety of names but I think the parent company is Be! (includes Be! Jazz, Be! Sharp). These sets are under the B.free banner which is a subset of Be! Jazz. Basically it appears to be a bootleg/pirate label AFAIK. https://www.bear-family.com/more-sections/distribution/be-records/ I've been interested in these since their release but I tend to reneg after reading the reviews of the label in discogs https://www.discogs.com/label/695643-BE!-Jazz I actually have the Jutta Hipp set & it is an amazing release - was gifted to me by another Organissimo member (thanks Dan) almost a year and a half ago The accompanying book is also superb So, I'm torn between buying their material or avoiding it 1 – 55 of 55 Prev 1 Next Jump to Genre AllElectronicJazzLatin Show 2550100250500 Reviews Show All 10 Reviews Add Review ZavezLoir November 17, 2018 I love this label very much. they have been released many rare reissues. It’s extremely hard to find those records’ original 1st pressing in mint condition. Artists should claim their right it is okay. But as a listener and consumer, I think the artists or their estate should re-release their old and ridiculously high priced albums before being ripped off. Bad quality and unlicensed bootlegs that should be avoided at all cost. Do NOT buy anything from these shameful pirate pressers. Reply See 2 replies Notify me 3 Helpful FrederiksbergRecords February 6, 2016 Please don't buy the BE Jazz bootleg of Carsten Meinert Kvartet "To You". We've made a remastered version from the original tapes and we've paid mechanicals as well as master rights. BE Jazz has done none of that and has no permission to release this title. Straight pirate bootleg! Shame on you Micha Gottschalk of BE Jazz. Concerning the Barney Wilen "Zodiac" release by BE Jazz, Patrick Wilen - son of Barney, wrote on his Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/barneywilen/?fref=ts "This bootleg of "Zodiac" came out under the label "BE! JAZZ". Don't buy it. Thank you in advance for being loyal customers and respecting the rights of musicians and their heirs. - Patrick Wilen" Reply See 1 reply Notify me 16 Helpful savagesaints December 22, 2015 I will never buy any BE! Jazz release. I've bought new Komeda "Ballet Etudes" LP (it's quite a lot of money) without any scratches but the sound is like from the sawmill. The publisher didn't say any word that the source is not from the master tapes but it's re-recorded from other LP in bad condition. Reply See 1 reply Notify me 6 Helpful
  3. Almost 70 mins of "Golden Circle" material will be missing Why not go "Live At The Lighthouse" style and make it 8 LPs or more to fit the unreleased material OTT & certainly of no interest to me
  4. whereas with some of the releases the opposite has been true ie Miles Davis Columbia Mosaic on vinyl commands big bucks (the CDs were released by Columbia/Sony & don't cost that much in most cases).
  5. RIP Robbie you Rhythm Killer!!
  6. Cheers, just listened - hadn't previously heard the Billy Parker/Dee Dee Bridgewater track very familiar with the Tolliver, Harper, Cowell, Jordan material
  7. none of those "Copy Controlled" CDs (only have a handful) were a problem on any of my Mac computers. Wasn't the software on the discs aimed purely at PCs?
  8. highly recommended & worth getting but if you have the earlier single CD released in 2005 (Nothing Is ESP-Disk 4024) then don't ditch it as it contains material not in the double set ie the first 4:35 of "Outer Nothingness" is called "Interplanetary Chaos" on the newer version (double CD) but the remaining 11 minutes of "Outer Nothingness" are missing/omitted (see pp 188-189 of Sun Ra Omniverse (Geerken & Trent)
  9. What a master he was I was lucky enough to see his trio perform at the VV in NYC in 2017 (September) plus the added bonus of a scatting chorus by Lee Konitz who was seated near us in the audience. Very special night indeed.
  10. Agreed - essential primary texts I was lucky enough to receive the BN Label (first edition - as above) as a birthday present in 1996
  11. All of my discs were CDs, even the Harry South 4CD set - I was expecting CDrs there
  12. Just received a few Rhythm & Blues discs two Rendell/Carr BBC Jazz Club 65-66, SME Question & Answer double plus the Harry South 4CD Currently listening to the Harry South - Further South: Broadcast Recordings 1960-67 - five hours of his Big Band & Dick Morrissey Quartet recordings (live & studio) for various BBC shows - all from Harry's personal tapes - what a treasure trove - highly recommended IMHO (It's also on special for £12 at present - I buy directly from the label - they remove the jewel cases making shipping to Australia a cheaper option. The lineup for his Big Bands were a namecall of many significant early to mid 60s UK jazz "modernists", the first session (1960) includes Joe Harriott The real bonus is the 27 page booklet packed with Simon Spillett's superb writing & research - hope he gets recompensed for the phenomenal input he has with the booklets/liner notes of many UK jazz releases - this one is more like a novella rather than just liner notes (you may need a magnifying glass to read them though)
  13. yes at last!! wonder if the "digital" release means download only or will we see physical product? I presume it'll be a CD since there's a 23 page booklet associated with the release The Complete, Legendary, Live Return Concert by Cecil Taylor will be available as a digital release on February 11, 2021 via Oblivion Records. Accompanying the digital release is a 23-page booklet featuring an essay by Alan Goodman. This release marks a revival for Oblivion – the label’s last announced release was in 1975.
  14. Just got the Esoteric 6CD set of the Nucleus Vertigo Years (70-75). I know its a few years old (have known about it since its release in 2019) but just wanted to comment on how amazingly good this is. Nine LPs on 6 CDs & mastered from the original tapes. SQ is stunning IMHO. I've had the original vinyl of the first two releases for many years (original australian Vertigo pressings) but had not heard the later material Chris Spedding's comments in the booklet are quite revealing (had a feeling that was the case) Essential & timeless (doesn't sound dated IMHO) listening for British Jazz fans
  15. Thanks for the link
  16. As mentioned above it can be purchased (as download) from Apple or iTunes but only as MP3 files https://1201music.com/js_albums/dewey-redman-look-for-the-other-black-star/ pity about the lack of file format - find it hard to justify paying out that much for MP3 files If they were available in FLAC, WAV, AIFF formats, I would definitely be buying (this is a wonderful session & alternative material would probably be up to standard too) I normally burn my downloads to disc (usually AIFF format) & listen on my HiFi setup rather than listening to MP3 files on my desktop computer (Harmon Kardon "Jellyfish" speakers. It's a pity the recent Japanese Freedom/Muzak "paper sleeve" edition of "Look at the Black Star" didn't add this to the original album, making it a 2CD release just like the Dudu Pukwana one from the same series ("Diamond Express+6") that added previously unreleased Freedom material from the same sessions
  17. is Julian Priester still active? Been listening to a lot of Phil Ranelin lately
  18. Brass & Ivory Tales 9CD set with Polish label "Listen Foundation" brass/piano duets including Burrell, Crispell, Fernandez, Courvoisier, Taborn https://sluchaj.bandcamp.com/album/brass-ivory-tales
  19. I've been listening to Ivo for a few years now & have many of his Leo CDs up till 2011-2012. Looks like he has been unbelievably prolific since then. I've had a hiatus for a few years. I want to pick up a bit more of his material from the yearly Leo "End Of The Century" sale - there is so much to choose from Any recommendations - possibly the Art of Improv Trio & Quartets (6CDs), Perelman-Shipp series vols 1-6 or the recent Efforvescence 4CD box, maybe Live In Brussels Any other fans out there? Updated/more recent Cook/Morton volumes would have been useful buy they are no more!!
  20. I generally pick up (or have done so) all of Dennis Gonzalez's CF releases - love his work His Silkheart releases with Charles Brackeen are highly recommended IMHO as is his Ayler & Daagnim material
  21. he has a passing similarity to Tubby Hayes - clip kept reminding me of Tubby
  22. Interested in the two Blackwells plus the Cecil Taylor Ruvo 2009 which looks like a new release? unless it's a redo of Cecil with The Italian Instabile Orchestra at Ruvo (but that was in 2002)
  23. romualdo

    Frank Zappa

Think I'll stick with my partially censored (and one track deleted) Australian double LP - that'll do But I'm loving the "Hot Rats" box & the three disc redo of "Orchestral Favorites" Some of the Wazoo period material (one of his best eras IMHO) has also been released on various (Zappa/Vault) CDs over the past 10 or 15 years
  24. leased from Blue Note?? Why??? these releases are getting more & more perplexing
  25. Blue Hat!!
