Are there any box bargains currently available?
romualdo replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The coltrane Impulse boxes # 4 & 5 are going for $28.99 (US Amazon) or 18.38 pounds (UK Amazon) - both via the same dealer (NAGIRY) ordered both through UK Amazon (slightly cheaper for me) hope these are legit releases (not Eastern European/Russian counterfeits!!) -
Picked up the box in the early 90's - havn't listened to it for years - these are quadraphonic alternate takes & mixes Wooden Ships - quad alt mix (5:55) Volunteers - quad alt take (2:17) We Can Be Together - quad alt take (6:04) Hey Frederick - quad alt take (9:07) - can't comment on differences between JK's solos as I don't have an original quad recording

Received my set yesterday (Euro version) My Disc 2 appears to be faulty It's difficult to load into my computer - keeps rejecting the disc but was eventually able to load it into Itunes Track 2 (Footprints) has quite audible clicking/ticking at 4:10 (lasting about 20 secs) & 6:25 (lasting approx 10 secs) Track 5 (Masqualero) as above @ 5:40 (approx 10 secs) These "anomalies" are most evident when the disc is in the car player - don't think they are part of the recording; nothing mentioned in the liner notes Anyone else had the same problem? Would appreciate someone else having a listen to their disc at those times listed above Will probably have to send the set back for a replacement - usually easy procedure with Amazon UK (have done this before)

Schildkraut CD reached Antipodean shores late last week thanks again -
Maybe this has been covered previously but here goes take 5 of Jumpin' Punkins from the Buell Neidlinger/Cecil Taylor Jan 61 candid session was omitted from the Mosaic set (only included takes 4 & 6) Take 5 has been included on the Candid CD Cell Walk For Celeste (9034) was it an oversight on MC's part or is really a different take I've listened to all three takes (have the Mosaic set & downloaded "tk 5" from Itunes) - all 3 takes sound different Any comments?

Trunk records (bless em) have just released a pair of obscure/early Airborne EP's on CD - recorded in the early 60's One is a very rare Garrick/Keane quartet EP (A Case of Jazz) - according to the liner notes, only 99 were pressed The other is a previously unreleased Airborne Acetate EP (personal copy of MG) of Shake Keane with the Hasting Girls choir & Gordon Langford Orchestra Listening to it now - the unreleased EP is quite eclectic/exotic (no wonder Johnny Trunk gravitated to this) - contains an interesting Bossa Nova track What a pity Joe Harriott wasn't on the released EP, still its great early 60's modern jazz

Have just found the short dance film made by Fred Baker in the summer of '62 - "On The Sound" The soundtrack was produced by Gigi Gryce & his Orch-tette & the three dancers came from the Martha Graham Troupe It won a few awards at film festivals Hard to imagine it was made almost 50 years ago

I've just finished reading "rat race blues" & listening to the recent uptown GG CD. Repeated themes of sadness & frustration abound but also very uplifting (just like Kelly's recent Monk tome) Interesting to see that the Mercury "Reminiscin" sessions (including 2 unreleased titles) have never been released on CD (not even Japan). I think this would be a great potential Mosaic "single" release (or even stretch it out, with other sessions, to a Mosaic select) Anyone agree? going through a Gigi Gryce phase at present

A new batch of these twofers is slated for release at the end of this month 15 more are already listed on the Grooves-Inc site Some mouth watering stuff here (I think very little has had previous CD release, except maybe in japan) I quickly jotted these down so don't have the LP names Sonny Criss John Handy Blue Mitchell Sonny Stitt Keith Jarrett Mel Brown Howard Roberts Marion Brown Oliver Nelson/Hank Jones Charles Mingus Alice Coltrane Freddie Hubbard Clark Terry Michael White Chico Hamilton

Picked up three in the last month (Stitt, Kelly & DeFranco)via Amazon & this site - all in great condition & very reasonable prices (most under $10) Don't think they were played much as the discs had virtually no scuffing There seem to be more VE's on the market these days & at lower prices (have a number of these on my Amazon Wish List & check daily) I use CD inner cellophane/plastic sleeves (like small LP inner sleeves)to protect discs that are housed in these situations (tight digipaks) - works very well - they come in packs of 50 (japanese origin but sourced from the US) Luckily I bought quite a few of these in the early 2000's when they were on sale here in Brisbane - think they were selling them for $4 (Aus) a piece

Can anyone confirm if there are two takes each of Elysee(s) & Hilo The Lord Discography lists two for each title Elysee tks B (78 vers) & ? (LP vers) Hilo tks C (78 vers) & ? (LP vers) other discographies don't make the distinction I have the titles (1 tk each) on the Rollins Prestige 7CD box (don't have any other versions for comparison ie OJC CD "Trombone By Three" or LP's) Lord lists the LP versions on the OJC CD (the 7 CD set is not mentioned) while the 78 versions are on the Proper Intro set (2069).

I tend to download the MP3 files & load them into iTunes For FLAC files (better quality) - you need a FLAC player (won't work in iTunes) -

Looks like Set #5 is being released on September 20 can't find any individual album listings methinks this is an error - that's the same date of release as Vol. 4 A few sites have this release listed as Vol. 5!! this is getting confusing check the MTV site http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/coltrane_john/albums.jhtml?albumId=2740715 it shows Vols 4 & 5 (different covers) but both being released on Nov 1 So, is there a Vol. 5 in the wings??

What prompted my initial interest was the cover to Double or Nothin' - In small print was Liberty Lighthouse Series, Vol. 1 then recently I found an image of the cover to Drummin' the Blues & again in smaller print, Vol. 3...... Check this site - page from Billboard discussing the new deal between Rumsey & Liberty http://books.google.com.au/books?id=KiAEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA48&lpg=PA48&dq=liberty+lighthouse+series+jazz+records&source=bl&ots=OsPsD8a6yO&sig=8VKY81fbuyRJBupuOGKizldyo48&hl=en&ei=rwZNTvjcDOjhiAKH28l3&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CBsQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=liberty%20lighthouse%20series%20jazz%20records&f=false Maybe the only to find out is to search relevant Liberty covers

Don't you think they would have made an exception for the "colonies" -
In the late 50's (and beyond?) Howard Rumsey & Liberty were involved in releasing a series of LP's I know of 2 Vol. 1 - Lighthouse All Stars - Double Or Nothin' (recently released as Japanese TOCJ CD) Vol. 3 - Lighthouse All Stars - Drummin' The Blues (On Lonehill Jazz CD Jazz Structures) Anyone know how many were released in this series
