  1. He died of an asthma attack. A wonderful pianist and a fine composer as well. He will be sorely missed. Bertrand.
  2. Hardbopjazz, Are you sure you saw him with Curtis Lundy? At what venue was that? I was under the impression he had not played with this group before. He has been doing gigs in D.C. and NYC with saxophonist Brad Linde. Could that be the group you saw at Dizzy's, Smalls' or Birdland? Bertrand.
  3. One more chance to catch Freddie Redd in the DC/Baltimore area tomorrow night. He will be at the Cyclops bookstore at 8:00 PM with Curtis Lundy, Eric Kennedy and special guest Tim Green. The address is 30 West North Avenue (corner of Maryland Avenue). Bertrand. P.S. I have no financial interest in this gig.
  4. I wonder what tunes they played. Bertrand.
  5. Odd - most of these tracks are from the Swedish sessions, but there are four I do not know: Guessin' Tunnelbanan Duo Ohio I wonder where these tracks are from? Bertrand.
  6. I left off a smiley. Bertrand.
  7. Last Friday the deal of the day was an Airplane gig from February '68 at the Matrix ($4.20 for the FLAC). Some great playing on there; the instrumental version of 'Ice Cream Phoenix' is worth it by itself. Not sure I need this box set, though. Seems a bit steep for a USB and a book. Bertrand.
  8. If I were a politician and Bono would try to sway me I would make a point of voting against any cause he is peddling. Bertrand.
  9. If ever they make a movie about Herbie, 'Love Gloom Cash Love' would be a great title. Bertrand.
  10. Why did he allow Fresh Sound to reissue this record but not Mosaic? Bertrand.
  11. It's coming - I'm in touch with them and they are working on it. I'll keep you posted. Bertrand.
  12. Those tapes belong in an archive. Bertrand.
  13. Happy birthday! Bertrand.
  14. The Body And The Soul is from March 1963, so I don't see how Golden Boy can precede it. Lee was not playing at all in that time frame. So Wayne's memory is faulty. If Curtis' is as well, then I'm ready to go with summer of '64. Bertrand.
  15. In my haste this morning, I did not explain myself very well. Also, I now have located my notes. What I meant to say is that the date could be 1963 rather than 1964. I'll give some pros and cons for each scenario. - The musical opens in NYC on 10/20/64. It actually opened in Philly first on 6/21/64. How could the Messengers get a hold of the music early? This would indicate a 1964 date, but probably not until June/July, and Wayne may have been gone by then, although we don't know exactly when he left. His last gig listed in the chronology is 6/19/64. - I was told Blakey and Sammy Davis were tight, so Blakey could have gotten the music early. - Curtis Fuller told me that Freddie was still the official trumpet player in the band, and Lee was an add-on. Lee was back in the band by 3/10/64, according to the chronology. - We also know Lee was off the scene from 11/62 to 9/63. So the record had to be after that. So either of the following situations could have occurred: 1) It was recorded 6/64/or 7/64; the musical has opened in Philly and Wayne may not have left yet. In this case, Curtis Fuller's statement is incorrect. 2) It was recorded between 9/63 and 3/64. This supports Fuller's statement. Perhaps they got a sneak preview of the music through Sammy. Two of the six tunes on the record were actually cut from the show, so they may well have written their arrangements before the NYC debut. This could be a question for Wayne or Curtis - how did they get the music? Bertrand.
  16. David Weiss can hopefully fill in with more details later since he studied this record carefully while preparing the first live perfromance of these arrangements, but here are some of the mysteries surrounding this session: 1) The date is probably 1963, not 1964. 2) David does not hear two trumpets on all the tracks. 3) Charles Davis may not be the baritone. 4) Colpix is now under the Blue Note, but Michael Cuscuna said the tape was missing. The issue of the date is key. The presence of Wayne Shorter on the record, presumably before he left the Messengers, suggests that the group had access to the music for the musical before the musical was performed in public. Also, Wayne claims in an interview that this record precedes Freddie Hubbard's The Body And The Soul which is from 1963. He remembers these as the first arrangements of his for larger ensemble that were recorded, and specifically stated they were before the ones he did for Hubbard. Bertrand.
  17. Also, the percussionist on Moto Grosso Feio is Micheline Pelzer, not 'Michelin Prell'. Bertrand.
  18. Art Blakey's Golden Boy is on the list. Does this mean they found the tape??? Bertrand.
  19. There are definitely some boxes that are missing: a collection of various live gigs from the 60s quintet, and a collection of live gigs from the lost quintet. We know there are good quality recordings out there. So far most of the material is from the Sony vaults, although the new BB sets show that they may be willing to open up. Bertrand.
  20. Oh, that changes everything. Bertrand.
  21. I hope they do a 50th anniversary of Quiet Nights in 2012. There must be some way to turn a 26-minute record into a 6-CD box. Bertrand.
  22. Butch will be at Blues Alley tomorrow night 10/19 with the Brad Linde ensemble (including Robert Redd on piano). They have a nice repertoire from various stages of his career planned, including some of the recent compositions. I hope some of you can come out. This will be a whole other dimension than that bullshit Columbia Station gig which was beneath his dignity, quite frankly. Bertrand.
  23. Can't decide which one I would have picked. Bertrand.
  24. Sorry I can't be there. I will definitely look out for this CD. Bertrand.
  25. I bet they're French and this is a crappy translation of 'tous mes succes'. Bertrand.
