  1. Those are the two extra tracks: 'The Intellect' by Moncur, and 'Plight' by Tolliver. They probably reordered the CD to keep the sets together by artist. I'll have to check the liner notes, it's possible the artists played in the CD order: Coltrane, then Shepp, then Tolliver, then Moncur (not sure where Ayler fit in, since his tune was dropped). The LP was probably sequenced to accomodate roughly the same amount of music on each side. Moncur and Tolliver's sets that night were brilliant, with Bobby Hutcherson a big asset in both cases. I just wish they had done more than two tunes each, but such was the nature of that particular concert. Bertrand.
  2. 'BTW, I don't think you should completely discount the fact that Redman's dad Dewey was friends with most of the judges. While I would hope that wasn't a deciding factor, I don't see how it could hurt Joshua if everything else was equal.' I don't think this is an accurate statement. The judges were Jackie McLean, Jimmy Heath, Frank Wess, Benny Carter and one more (possibly Branford Marsalis?). I have no reason to believe any of these gentlemen had anything against Dewey, but I don't think any of them hung out a lot with him, so I doubt this would have weighed strongly in their opinion. I was in the audience when Joshua won, and he just played better than anyone else that day. Since then, I have been more interested in Potter's work than that of the others. Bertrand.
  3. It seems the CD of the New Wave In Jazz compilation on Impulse! has a different track order than the LP, probably to accomodate the bonus tracks. Can anyone confirm the LP track order below that I found on the web? Thanks, Bertrand. Nature Boy (John Coltrane) Holy Ghost (Albert Ayler) Blue Free (Grachan Moncur III) Hambone (Archie Shepp) Brilliant Corners (Charles Tolliver)
  4. Now I feel bad about my crack in reference to his appearance at Amougies. I hope all the best for him and a speedy recovery. Bertrand.
  5. Please accept my deepest condolences. Bertrand.
  6. 'What's the story here? Is Jarman out of the Ensemble again?' Mitchell and Moye told him he couldn't play with them again until he put some pants back on. Bertrand.
  7. I was living in France when this film came out but I did not see it. I had no idea of Wayne's involvement; I was just starting to listen to Jazz. I probably knew of him, but that was it. It sounds like there is enough of him on this to track this down. Thanks for telling us about this one! Bertrand.
  8. I got all of them but the Jimmy Smith. The Blakey, Hutcherson and Reece are wonderful. The other three are only OK, but definiteky worth having. I remember at the time a lot of people complained that the Grant Green was pretty weak. Today, we'd be psyched if they announced they had uncovered ten more sessions of this caliber. Bertrand. I checked and there were actually *7* CDs in that batch! Art Blakey - Drums Around The Corner Lou Donaldson - Man With A Horn Grant Green - Blues For Lou Bobby Hutcherson - The Kicker Dizzy Reece - Comin’ On Jimmy Smith - Six Views Of The Blues Various Artists - The Lost Sessions Those were the days...
  9. I want to get an all region DVD player so I can buy DVDs in France and play things that I might buy fron ina.fr. It looks like I will have to get it online. Amazon has some by known brands for $50-$60. Are these all I need? Sounds awfully cheap. Are there any that anyone highly recommends, or any to stay away from? Thanks, Bertrand.
  10. Another effing compilation - no imagination whatsoever. Bertrand.
  11. I'm thinking of getting the MP3 from Amazon which can be had for under $4 (unless somoene can point me to a cheap copy of the actual CD). How is Grachan Moncur III on this? Does he get to solo a lot? Thanks, Bertrand.
  12. This was definitely a session that should never have stayed in the can for so long. IIRC, this was one of 6 CDs that came out in 1999 for the BN 60th anniversary, and the list was chosen by members of the BNBB (most of whom gravitated here). I agree that the arrangements are very inventive, and Lee is definitely on fire. Contrast this with the non-celebration of the 70th anniversary Bertrand.
  13. I saw a few at Staples as well. Gives new meaning to the slogan - 'yeah, we got that'. Bertrand.
  14. I am hoping WM is just kidding around. If not, he is even more of a flaming asshole than even I could imagine. He's offering Blood On The Fields as if it were a reward. Egads. Bertrand.
  15. They also voted to reaffirm that jazz is a national treasure (i.e. to renew H.R. 57). What was the alternative, to say 'after thinking about it, we changed our mind and decided that jazz is no longer a national treasure'? Bertrand.
  16. Looks like the problem had nothing to do with iTunes. I called HP (you can do that any time under the 1-year warranty), and my defaults did not give me admin privileges so the files were read-only. It looks like I can edit the info now on all of them, knock on wood. Next step: get rid of all the duplicates created by a manipulation error on my part when I backed everything up. Bertrand.
  17. So I just bought a new computer. I downloaded iTunes (version 9). I had all my music backed up on an external drive (good move since the old hard drive crashed). I dragged all the music from the external drive to C:. Then I went into add files to Library and everything got copied over. BUT when I try to go into 'get song info', everything is greyed out as if the file is a read only. With my wife's computer which has an earlier version of iTunes, it works fine and I can edit the song info. Did something change in iTunes 9? Am I supposed to import the music differently? Very frustrating. Bertrand.
  18. Isn't this one out of print? Bertrand.
  19. There are 2 Weiss's, both on this board, not related: David Weiss (trumpet) Michael Weiss (piano)
  20. The only Criss I have so far are This Is Criss which is very good and Sonny 's Dream which is a masterpiece. What are the ones you would get next? I'll still get the two listed above since they are cheap. How is his Jazz In Paris date? Bertrand.
  21. 'but I gotta admit the real reason I have trouble watching is that I grew up with the guy and every time I see him it reminds me of how much more money he has than I have'. Allen is far too modest to tell us his other connection to the show - he was the inspiration for the episode in which Elaine is dating a jazz saxophonist. Bertrand.
  22. See if Sam Rivers still has a weekly gig somewhere. He is a national treasure. Bertrand.
  23. Strouse donated his collection to the Library of Congress a year or two ago. Expect it to be fully cataloged and available to the public for research in the next 20 years or so. David, did you get a contact info on the Strouse expert you spoke to, by any chance? Thanks, Bertrand.
  24. I was browsing the Newbury comics site looking for some of the cheap Fantasy titles they have (a random selection of titles uncorrelated with the recent oldies blowout). The ones below caught my eye. Are there any in this batch I should avoid? Thanks, Bertrand. Sonny Criss: The Beat Goes On Sonny Criss: Up, Up And Away Shirley Scott: Blue Seven Jimmy Forrest: Most Much Gene Ammons: Late Hour Special
  25. The way Sony is packaging Miles is pathetic. Put out the DVDs from the 60s already, one at a time, no box set, no tee-shirts, just the damn music. How fucking hard can it be? Bertrand.
