  1. This one killed me today: http://www.theonion.com/content/news_brief...ource=b-section
  2. 'Valley Girl' might work.
  3. 'Got tickets to see his quartet at the Salle Pleyel in October!' I noticed on their website that this concert is listed as a tribute to Miles Davis. I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that the 10/29 concert is occurring during the time frame of the exhibit below. Bertrand. Miles Davis – We Want Miles 16 October 2009 to 17 January 2010 Organised with the support of Miles Davis Properties, this exhibition by the Cité de la Musique follows Miles Davis’ musical and personal journey, from his hometown, East St-Louis, to his retrospective concert at La Villette in Paris, just a few weeks before his death. Beginning in the mid Sixties, Miles Davis began printing “Directions in Music by Miles Davis” on his albums, rather than just his name. As a tribute to his visionary approach, visitors can discover each of these “directions” along a pathway displaying photographs taken by the biggest names in musical photography, video excerpts from his concerts, instruments he or his travel companions played, rare scores and stage costumes, documents related to the creation of his albums, original releases of his great records, as well as works of art, paintings and sculptures, testifying to an aura which vastly exceeded the sphere of music. 4. I went to see the Wallace Roney quintet at Bohemian Caverns tonight. Fantastic gig - his current rhythm section really gets a great groove going. They've added a lot of tunes to the repertoire, including Tony Williams' 'Only With You', which Wallace recorded with Tony. I highly recommend this gig - I will try to go back on Sunday. If you are not in the DC area, you can hear live feeds at www.wallaceroney.com Bertrand.
  5. 'Wayne Shorter never could play no changes'. The use of double negatives actually turns this into a correct statement, although that was not Lou's intention, I'm sure. Bertrand.
  6. Isn't he an attorney as well?

    Wayne Shorter

Still going strong with a major European tour coming up. I hope he puts out a new recording soon. I saw him last December, and hope to catch him again soon, although I doubt it will be this year, unless he plays a bit at the Monk competition or I trek up to Boston. Bertrand.
  8. Was anyone able to get the Shirley Scott Legends Of Acid Jazz with Turrentine? It's on their site, but the price is scratched off. Bizarre. Bertrand.

    Rashied Ali

Don't forget his work on Jackie McLean's 'Bout Soul. Some really great stuff going on. I actually was introduced to Rashied by Larry Ridley at Jackie's funeral. I wish I had gotten to speak to him longer. Bertrand.
  10. The thing about the break-in seems a bit far-fetched... Bertrand.
  11. What is the origin of this Freddie Hubbard meltdown? Bertrand.
  12. What record does Sonny Clark's 'My Dream Of Nica' appear on? Bertrand.
  13. Smart guy - probably did some research beforehand so as to figure out how NOT to introduce oneself here for fear of garnering the wrath of the 'welcoming committee'. Welcome aboard! Boney M. rocks! Bertrand.
  14. It's the same organist as on Iron City. Bertrand.
  15. I'm lucky my Borders' still has some titles. I picked up Tolliver's Impact on Enja (and the Airplane Woodstock set). Bertrand.
  16. What four were removed from the sale, since Stitt's Bits finally showed up? I'll see if I already have them or need to hunt them down some other way. Thanks, Bertrand.
  17. Fantastic news! Bertrand.
  18. So they could have just put the Woodstock set on 2-CDs of almost an hour each and I would have picked it up right away. But they included Volunteers, so I didn't get it thinking: 'I already have some of this'. How stupid. Bertrand.
  19. Still waiting for an official release on DVD of some of this stuff... And whatever happened to the 2-CD set from Juan-Les-Pins in 1969? This stuff would sell if marketed properly. Bertrand.
  20. Has anyone picked this up yet? By 1969, the Airplane live were hit and miss (if the set list includes 'You Wear Your Dresses Too Short', I'm outta there as a rule - I know this one doesn't). How are they on this date? Is Jack Casady heard prominently? I do like the song selection. I had passed on the Fillmore set for years, but then when I found at Daedalus for $6 I picked it up - It's astounding. The version of 'Star Track' blows my mind. Does the Woodstock set come anywhere near this? Bertrand.
  21. That's my theory too - Concord must have discovered the error and told Oldies they couldn't sell it that cheap. Let's see if there are any other titles on which they cancel the backorder. Did anyone order Blues For Dracula and get a Joe Pass CD instead
  22. The Max Roach Mosaic set includes a 7/6/58 Newport date where they do 'Tune Up'. Roach specifically credits Vinson in the announcement that I believe was unissued until the Mosaic set. A Jazz research friend of mine in France had Vinson over to his house, and he played 'Four' and 'Tune Up' for him as he had conceived them. The story is that Vinson gave these to Miles, so credits will always go to Miles; the estate could theoretically sue otherwise. That's some serious chunk of change that Eddie gave up to Miles. One thing I never hear about is what their relationship was. It's not like they are known to have played together all that often. Bertrand.
  23. I was more trying to pinpoint titles they could not fill and had to be officially canceled. So far, it seems like it's only the Stitt. Bertrand.
  24. I got my back-ordered Setting The Pace today, which completes my order of 9 (modest by youse guys standards, I know). So other than Stitt's Bits, what titles have been declared officially unavailable by oldies.com? Note that it is still listed on their site (1-3 days), but the 'over 2,300' titles is now 'over 2,000', so they must have dropped some titles. I plan to make small orders from time to time until they declare their stock depleted. I know some of these will be gone for good afterwards, but I just can't get 100 CDs at a time. I have accumulated a healthy Fantasy collection over the years. It's astounding how much good stuff there still is in their sale that I could get, and I'm not even thinking about stuff that I could get for regular price at Concord, Newbury etc. Bertrand.
  25. I believe both tunes were copyrighted by their respective authors. I will double check that. Which was recorded first? Bertrand.
