I wondered about that actually. Anyway, I'm going tomorrow not for Joshua or the SF name, but for Hutch and Renee. What Hancock tunes will be on the CD? I can't seem to find a track listing. Bertrand.

And yet, Hendrix put out TONS of records after his death. Bertrand.

I'll be glad to pitch in - I was just thinking the other day that it had been a while since my last contribution. Bertrand.

Here's an article from CNN: http://money.cnn.com/2006/03/21/technology...dex.htm?cnn=yes I'm not sure what it all means. I have a 40-gig which my wife was thinking of taking, and I was going to replace it with the 60-gig model. Personally, I don't really need the video - I just want more gigs. I was hoping they would come up with a 100-gig model, and was waiting a bit. But now, this article makes me think the 60-gig isn't doing so well, so they may not be shooting for more gigs because the demand isn't there. I'm not sure what is better about this alleged new model. How many gigs would it have? What is bluetooth? I suspect it's nothing I need. All I want is to be able to put most of my CDs in there. I don't need anything fancy. Should I just get the 60-gig now before it's too late, or do you guys think more gigs are still on the horizon? Thanks, Bertrand.

Yes, the music on the CD is the soundtrack to the show. Bertrand.

There is 20-25 minute episode of the TV show Soul with Morgan's last quintet plus Bobbi Humphrey, filmed just a few weeks before his death. They play 'Angela', 'I Remember Britt' and 'Sidewinder' (cut short at the end of the credits). Bertrand.

That cover looks strangely like another one - possibly Playing Possum by Carly Simon. Bertrand.

Miles - On the Corner and Beyond
bertrand replied to Aggie87's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yes, I think Cuscuna was working on it. There would be a box assembling some of the best live stuff from the second qunitet, so I guess '67 or maybe even '68. This would be a legit release of stuff that was out in Europe. There are rights issues to be worked out, hence the hold up. Bertrand. -
THE MUSIC OF WAYNE SHORTER w/W.Shorter Repertory Orchestra
bertrand replied to Lazaro Vega's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Adam, Thanks for the set list. It's Mr. Jin - I think he was a Japanese promoter who brought the messengers over there. Sounds like some great music - I hope I can catch this one day by hook or by crook; too bad it's during the week How were the Pogues? Bertrand. -
I disagree about the Mobley Savoy sessions - there's some very strong compositions on these dates, especially 'Madeline' and 'Spece Flight'. Besides, the tracks are way too short to be considered 'blowing tunes'. The solos end way before they get old. I haven't listened to the Prestige stuff that much. I never did buy the Fantasy CD since a tune was missing, and I was annoyed since they could have easily solved the problem by leaving out 'Au Privave' instead and making it a bonus track on Jackie McLean's 4.5 and 6 album. Johnny Griffin's A Blowing Session - now that's a Blowing Session! Bertrand.

U. of Michigan to stage lost James P. Johnson opera
bertrand replied to ghost of miles's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
There are rumors going around on the net that James P. Johnson's nephew (the one who played drums with him for a year before being fired because he couldn't keep time) who is now executor of the Johnson estate is trying to put the kibbosh on this project. Bertrand. -
In the Lee Morgan folder at IJS, there is a copy of the flyer for Slug's showing that Keith Jarrett was scheduled to play there right after the infamous week that Lee never got to finish. It must have said quartet, because I remember thinking 'wow - Dewey Redman was scheduled to be at the club right after Lee was killed'. I always assumed the gig did not take place. I stand corrected. Bertrand.

Don Cheadle may play Miles Davis in biopic
bertrand replied to mgraham333's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
You guys can laugh, but Vincent Wilburn just slipped me a cool million to write the screenplay for this biopic. Only problem is, it seems they are in a hurry to get this flick started: I have to finish it over the week-end. Any ideas on how to put a novel twist on the Miles Davis story? Bertrand. -
Mike, Is this the Chained session that is 4/19/67? Bertrand.

Artists that retired at the top of their game.

Teddy Charles played at Blues Alley in D.C. last year. Bertrand. -

Teddy Charles is still playing. Herbie Nichols retired by dying. If you widen the net to include that scenario, then I could list hundreds of names. Bertrand. -
Is this the one with Gryce compositions? Bertrand.

The other half I was thinking about was the Lacy date. Other half in the sense where, if these are ever issued, they would naturally fit together to make a decent-length CD. That is up to the reissue producer, natch, whoever he/she might be. Bertrand.

A little birdy told me there is a crummy bass solo on one of these tracks. Was I misinformed? Bertrand.

From the Henry Grimes discography at jazzdiscography.com: Date: November 29, 1961 Location: New York City Label: Atlantic Don Cherry (ldr), Don Cherry ©, Henry Grimes (b), Ed Blackwell (d) a. 5829 The Idiot - 04:56 (Ornette Coleman) b. 5830 Harlemite - 08:34 (Don Cherry) c. 5831 Black Elk Speaks - 07:10 (Don Cherry) Details from Raben who says: Erroneously "Black Elk Speaks" was assigned to 2 masternumbers (5831 and 5832). 5829 is untitled - Raben says: Ornette Coleman composition - prob. "The Idiot". Chuck Nessa advises that this recording still exists. Comments from Bertrand This is obviously a half-session; I forget what the other half was. Neither Cherry tune was copyrighted, at least not under those titles. All other Cherry copyrights are the BN stuff, the tune from the Coltrane album and a tune from a Dave Pike record. Did Ornette ever record 'The Idiot'? Bertrand.

I didn't say they weren't any good. I just said Blue Note said they were unfit for release. They initially said the whole session should be burned, yet later released three cuts so go figure. The same discussion applies to your KD post. Bertrand.

Kenny Dorham's Blue Lament. 1961 unissued BN session.
bertrand replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Discography
The decision is made by Blue Note. Some people may have different opinions, but there's nothing that can really be done. Back in 1999 on the old board, we were asked to select unissued sessions to be released for the 60th anniversary hooplah. This one was requested multiple times, but the answer was a firm no. I could have sworn I was told that KD was off-mike. Is that the case? BTW, why are you referring to it as Blue Lament? I don't think they had gone as far as picking a title. That's the name of a tune that was on the session that Don Sickler recorded later on his KD tribute. Bertrand.
