  1. Excellentissimo! Bertrand.
  2. An iPod is a playback medium, just like a turntable or a CD player or a tape deck. If you choose to play your CDs back through your iPod, it's your choice. If you choose to tape your CDs and listen to them on your walkman, it's your choice. RIAA is full of crap. They don't even understand the copyright law. Bertrand.
  3. I don't want him to re-record the albums, but I would like to hear him play these pieces with the quartet and maybe an orchestra. A Wayne Shorter composition has not been fully explored and dissected just because it was recorded once, regardless of the instrumentation. There are many other pieces from throughout his career I would like to see him revisit, beginnning with 'The Albatross'. Bertrand.
  4. I agree that this music is highly-underrated. I recently put Navigator in my iPod and it's been on heavy rotation since. I agree with Stefan about the synthesizer gurgles, but I have learned over time to get past them, just as I learned to get past them with Weather Report (it wasn't always easy - Zawinul went overboard with that TONTO thing on Tale Spinnin'). I saw Wayne live in Paris on 3/17/87 during the Navigator tour, and it was this gig that made me realize how amazing he really was. In a way, it was this gig that changed everything for me. I would love to hear more live stuff from this tour, too bad only the studio album came out. If Michael Cuscuna could get a hold of some good-quality private tapes, this would make a wonderful Mosiac select: some material from the Atlantis tour, and some from the Navigator tour. I'm not sure if he toured behing Joy Ryder. Wayne has been playing some material from Joy Ryder with the current band, and also with the orchestras. It would be great if he were to dig up some of the Navigator material. The orchestra does a better job of achieving the full sound that Wayne was reaching for than the synths do (IMHO). Maybe I'll toss the idea at Wayne at the next Monk competition. Bertrand. P.S. Some people seem to think of Atlantis as an electric album. Except for the bass and the opening track, it's all acoustic. No synths in sight.
  5. Could be the John Pearson portion they're playing... I doubt it's 'Falling Water'. Greaves would have had to pull some strings to get to the vaults. Bertrand.
  6. I'll try to check out a few of the free things, notably James Zimmerman, who is an excellent Hendricks-influenced singer. Do you know anything about the group Masquelero? There was a scandinavian group named after this (mispelled) Wayne tune, but I know it's not them. Do they have any Wayne connection at all? Bertrand.
  7. I just was made aware of the existence of an experimental film called 'Symbiopsychotaxiplasm' by William Greaves whixh apparently features a Miles Davis soundtrack. It was filmed in 1968. According to the blurb in the Washington Post Express, 'the spacey-funky Miles Davis soundtrack underscores the role of improvisation in Greaves' creative process'. So what is this spacey-funky soundtrack? A google search shows additional music by John Pearson (?) and Joe Zawinul. 1) If it's something from a record, it's probably side 2 of In A Silent Way, although tis was recorded 2/69, which seems to be a little late if the movie was filmed in 1968, but then it depends on when it was edited. Plus, it looks like the fim was not released at the time. 2) If it's new music not available on a record, then it gets really interesting. I tried to go to Losin's site, but it's down. Miles and Robert Irving did a couple of things in the mid-80s that have never been released as recordings (soundtrack to Street Mart and music for an Alfred Hitchcock TV show), so there is a precedent. You would think Sony would have managed to get everything out. So what is this mystery soundtrack? Anyone seen this film? It's playing at AFI, so I may invest $9.25 myself to solve this puzzle, if my schedule permits. Bertrand.
  8. I see no problem, unless he sent it to you with a note saying: 'Here, save me some money and post this for free on as many jazz sites as you can' Posting these does everyone a favor: the public, by hipping them to gigs they might have missed, David, by freeing up his time to concentrate on the arranging rather than having to write up his own press releases, and of course the promoter, who we do want to stay in business, after all. I see no problem posting these. Citing the source is certainly a bonus courtesy, but not citing it is hardly equivalent to spam. My two cents. Bertrand. P.S. If Jim were to charge for these, then he would have to start going all Lois Gilbert-y on us and saying 'you can say no wrong about David Weiss, The Iridium or Jin Eigo because they are our clients'. Then I would have to leave the only jazz forum I enjoy. I savor the right to freely express my opinions here within the bounds of common decency.
  9. What's the controversy here, exactly? Bertrand.
  10. Pathetically, I have absolutely no idea how to do that
  11. Good news - I was waiting for 30% coupons for the new Andrew Hill and Joe Chambers, which both come out on 2/21. You know all is not lost in this crazy world when Andrew and Joe both have a NEW record coming out the same day. There's still hope for mankind. Bertrand.
  12. I'm going to try to be there. Also Joe Chambers the Thursday and Friday. It's intended to be a mini Blue Note-fest. Jazzshrink, Did you figure out a good place to stay in NYC? I need recommendations. Bertrand.
  13. I'm thinking of catching the Baltimore show - do they do all originals? Bertrand.
  14. Some of the unissued material should have remained so, but I'm glad they put out the tracks with Joe Chambers, as well as those with Larry Young. Bertrand.
  15. Andrew Hill Bill Heid Bertrand.
  16. Allen, It was posted on this forum a while ago that Jordan was still living in Europe (Denmark?) and quite ill. Brownie, Did you know Boris Vian? He was one of my heroes growing up. Bertrand.
  17. I'm a moron - what's the mis-print on the Mobley, I just don't see it. Bertrand.
  18. No other label makes as many errors; it's mind-boggling. Tons of people have offered to proof these things in exchnge for a few freebies, but they're too fucking arrogant to take them up on it. At least the music's still great. Hank Mobley is the Rodney Dangerfield of jazz. Bertrand.
  19. I am of course going to buy this - I love Joe. I'm just curious to know if there are any new originals. I do hope there are not vocals on every track, but even that would not keep me from getting it. I'm glad Dwayne Burno finally got to record with Joe - he told me a few years ago how much he loves playing with him. He's at the Iridium 4/6-7; I plan to be there. Bertrand.
  20. 'Trapped is composed by Wayne Shorter on the cd label'. Thanks. I'm glad that got corrected this time around. Bertrand.
  21. Did Wayne show up to collect his statuette? Bertrand.
  22. This is coming out on 2/21 on Savant. Didn't even know about it until yesterday. There are some tunes from other records, some new stuff. I don't know how many are new Chambers compositions. A vocalist is listed at CD Universe. What do we know about this CD? How many tracks have vocals? Thanks, Bertrand.
  23. Who is credited as composer of 'Trapped' on the RVG of the Gigolo? Thanks, Bertrand.
  24. Blue Note is putting out CD-rs now? I guess it's their form of copy protection. Bertrand.
  25. Adam, Thanks for the set list. There is a piece called 'Not Sa No Sa' on the Jazzpar CD The Day The World Stood Still. I was hoping they would do some material from the Mosaic Select - I think 'Monkash' (AKA 'Gentle Suspension') would work in this context. Sorry I missed this group. Bertrand.
