MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR
bertrand replied to Claude Schlouch's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Claude, A very merry christmas and a happy new year to you as well! Bertrand. -
I hated Madame Bovary. Had to study it in high school; what a nightmare. Bertrand.

She kicked Peter Brotzmann out half-way through his interview. There was a half-hour of dead air on NPR that day. It was in all the papers. I'm surprised you didn't hear about it. Bertrand.

How does one get to hear this Berkeley concert? Is this the one that is allegedly unreleasable due to sonic problems? Bertrand.

Yeah, the 'read Flaubert crap' really pisses me off. I have noticed a rather hostile wave recently, mostly concentrated in the politics forum, fortunately, but spilling into other forums a little bit. It's holiday time, dammit. Bertrand.

David, I believe this album was not released until the 70s, in Japan first. In fact, I'm not even sure when it came out in the U.S. Herbie Handcock is a fabulous pianist. Too bad this is his only recording. Bertrand.

So, is this thing copy-protected? Bertrand.

I think the above posters have it right. I know it's a pain and an extra expense, but it seems like the wise choice in this case. In fact, you may already have trouble finding a room. Good luck, and enjoy your vacation once you get there! Bertrand.

I don't think Suzy Creamcheese (Pamela Zarubica) was a groupie in the sense where I don't think she was sleeping with rock stars right and left. She was very young when Zappa met her. I would normally feel somewhat callow discussing these matters in the presence of the person in question, but I don't think the organissimo Suzy Creamcheese is the same as Zappa's - I could be wrong. Bertrand.

I find the three compositions on Side One to be particularly strong, however. Bertrand.

The probability of unknown unissued sessions is higher with Roulette than with other labels, considering what a wacky businessman Morris Levy was (anyone see the film 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love?' about Frankie Lymon?). A 1961 or 1962 Downbeat blurb mentions that Lee Morgan was to do a session for Roulette with a large orchestra conducted by Tadd Dameron. I know for a fact that Levy gave up on Lee, who he could not pin down for a recording session, but we do not know for sure that some aborted session did not take place. And the details for the Lee Morgan half-session for Roulette (3 tracks, one each by Wayne, Lee and Bobby Timmons) are very sketchy, leading me to believe that Roulette was not nearly as meticulous about keeping session logs as Alfred Lion was. Just my two cents. Bertrand.

I hope this is released commercially as many of the piano jazz series are, and that Andrew's current record label (Green Note or something) doesn't put the brakes on it. Sounds like a great show. When was this taped? Is it recent? I heard that Andrew is doing pretty well all things considred and that his spirtis are high. This show may be one more indication of that. Bertrand.

I'm pretty sure he meant Cirrus. Bertrand.

There is no Hutcherson LP entitled Rosewood. Do you mean Cirrus, which opens with the composition 'Rosewood'? I would like to see this on CD as well. There was talk elsewhere of a Hutcherson Mosaic select with some of the 70s BN sessions. I don't know when it's supposed to come out. Bertrand.

I just called Will's Pub in Orlando. Sam played last week, and will play again tomorrow, so I will most likely be seeing him (I'm flying in to Disney for a few days). I was thinking of starting an Organissimo condolence thread that I could print out and bring to him, unless you guys think it is a bad idea (corny/tasteless, whatever). Let me know what you think. Thanks, Bertrand.

I believe there's a photograph in Valerie Wilmer's book. Bertrand.

And Rick James is de-funked. Bertrand.

Age on Organissimo Jazz Forums ?
bertrand replied to birdanddizzy's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
My son (6 in March) is the biggest Woody Shaw fan on the planet. If I have a 6-year-old, then I must be at least 24. Bertrand. -
I was planning on seeing Sam in Orlando this Wednesday. This is terrible news. He must be devastated. It sounds like she was a wonderful lady. Bertrand.
-
It may be listed in the Lord CD-Rom. Bertrand.
-
There's also a bio/disco by Norman Meehan. I believe it's published by Berkeley Hills. Bertrand.
-
Thelma Patton told me there's a third, unissued DIW session. Bertrand.

organissimo wants to play in YOUR TOWN
bertrand replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Jim, Any new date for Blues Alley yet? Thanks, Bertrand. -
By the way, Allan, how do you know about the Lee Morgan gig? Is it somewhere on the web? The American Jazz Institute's site has not been updated yet. Bertrand.

Now that I've been able to listen to this in depth because I WAS ABLE TO PUT IT ON MY IPOD, here's my thoughts: 1. I have to say, I'm not crazy about the Gumbs composition, and I'm not that crazy about the one they left off either - I guess his composition style just leaves me indifferent. I find them both a little cloying. 2. The rest of this CD is just fabulous - 'Escape Velocity' in particular is just amazing. The band was on fire! Now the bad news: How fucking hard is it to properly separate the tracks on a CD??? Here are two major flaws I found: 1. The spoken intro to 'In A Capricornian Way' is part of 'Stepping Stone'. Why? The intro to a tune should be part of the tune itself. But there's much worse: 2. A few seconds of 'Second Avenue' are to be found at the end of 'In A Capricornian Way'. It's only Victor Lewis hitting his sticks together for a couple of seconds, but it is part of the song, not part of the previous song!!! I'm sure it's a Sony problem, not an iTunes problem but I would love to be proven wrong. How lame can a record company get??? Bertrand.
