  1. I hate to sound nit-picky, but it's Rene McLean - he's a guy. Bertrand.
  2. Valerie, I sent you a PM with my contact info. Bertrand.
  3. I'm surprised they didn't say the lovely Renee McLean. Sheeesh... Bertrand.
  4. Adam, I was told there could be last-minute tickets for Wayne. When I booked it, there were only a few left. Please do let me know about Freddie Redd. I know the Morgan is tough because of the distance and it's a work-night. I'll be staying in Pasadena, and I'll probably spend the whole day at Claremont College. RDK brought up the idea of maybe meeting afterwards for a drink. There may also be a reception - I'll try to find out. The film forum looks interesting as well, but I would still prefer a gig if I can find one. I'll keep searching. Bertrand.
  5. Oh, does Miles Davis' ex-wife Frances Davis still work at Hamburger Hamlet? Which one? Thanks, Bertrand.
  6. We've talked about this on other threads, but now it's time to formalize this. I'll be in L.A. from 1/27-1/31. It'd be great to meet the L.A. contingent, either as a group or separately. I've spoken to RDK already, and I think L.A. is also the home to Adam, Noj and ValerieB. So far, I am doing the following: 1) Lee Morgan tribute at Claremont College, 1/30 2) Wayne Shorter at Disney Concert Hall, 1/28 (if only Wayne could be at the Lee Morgan concert!) We could meet before or after these gigs. I know some of you are plannning to attend one or both of these shows. As for other gigs, I checked the site that Tom Marcello pointed out last week, but didn't seen anything really gripping. I am certainly open for suggestions. I fly in pretty late on Friday, but I'm pretty open for Sunday. Is Freddie Redd playing anywhere? He will not be at the one place he played on the Friday after Thanksgiving, unfortunately. Maybe I could at least meet him for coffee or something. Wasn't someone on this board (Adam?) in touch with him? Anyway, if you would like to try to hook up, please send me a PM and I'll give you my cell and the number of my hotel in Pasadena. Looking forward to meeting you guys! Bertrand.
  7. In the golden age of Tower records, they used to have tons of TOCJs, including many titles not available in the U.S. at the time. Depending on the yen, the prices would fluctaute dramatically. Tower also used to have the clearance sales, which sometimes would be up to 30% off. So, I would be able to get TOCJs for $14-$15, like Stylings Of Silver, the two Thad Jones not available in the U.S., Tyrone Washington etc. etc. I miss those days. Bertrand.
  8. Shouldn't be protected. Do they play on your computer? When a player refuses to play more than one or two CDs, it's probably the player on the fritz. Bertrand.
  9. I'll be in LA next week (1/27-1/31). There was talk of us all possibly getting together for a show, maybe the Lee Morgan Tribute at Claremont McKenna College on 1/30 (which is why I'm going). I'm also going to the Wayne Shorter gig on 1/28. Bertrand.
  10. Are the Jazz at the Maintenance Shop DVDs still scheduled? I'm really looking forward to those. Bertrand.
  11. Wilson Pickett, Archie Shepp and Moondog on the same bill? Amazing! Bertrand.
  12. Good choice of 'Carolina Moon' - that's a fantastic arrangement that Monk does. Bertrand.
  13. Didn't Eddie Moore die onstage at Yoshi's? Bertrand.
  14. Which he actually read. Maybe dubya was just trying to save his own ass. Bertrand.
  15. LCJO has a comfort zone?
  16. I wonder if there will be a rebuttal to Sue Mingus' letter? Bertrand.
  17. Have you guys seen the bitchy letter in this month's DB? She practically calls Sunenblick a bootlegger. If she lost the case, why is she still whining? Bertrand.
  18. Or sideperson? I have her 5 albums as a leader on Concord, plus the one with Coryell. I am avoiding This Is Me (David Benoit, I don't think so), so what's left? It seems she didn't do too many sideman gigs. I think she was with Astrud Gilberto for a while. Is this documented? Anything else? Thanks, Bertrand.
  19. I was hoping to go this year, but work got in the way I recommend the panel on Friday 1/13 at noon hosted by LLoyd Pinchback, Larry Appelbaum and Sam Perryman of the Library of Congress. It's entitled: 'Jazz Resources at the Library of Congress: Collecting Is Our Business'. It's in the Central Park Room of the Sheraton Hotel. Bertrand.
  20. I think someone once Id'ed it as a well-known LA landmark, but I did a search and couldn't find it. Perhaps on the 'other' board? Bertrand.
  21. What is that bizarre piece of architecture in the backdrop on the cover of Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Bertrand.
  22. I don't know the Ray Brown, and I bet it's good, but you cannot live another minute of your life without the Brooks and Hubbard. They aren't quite the same band - different piano and drums. Bertrand.
  23. AMG also claims Lou is playing baritone on these dates. That's VARITONE, not baritone. Bertrand.
  24. From today's Washington Post, it appears Barry feels hurt and betrayed because: 'There is a sort of unwritten code in Washington, among the underworld and the hustlers and those other guys, that I am their friend'. No comment. Bertrand.
