  1. I feel like Brownie - 'Malachi', the piano solo track is gorgeous. I also wondered why RVG was not involved. Bertrand.
  2. The other three tracks: 'Blues For Mr. Tatum' (Mabern) - 'The Chief' (Mabern) - 'The Sleepwalker' (Morgan) have been deemed unfit for release by Blue Note. A live version of 'The Chief' with Bennie Maupin can be heard on the Lee Morgan Fresh Sound CD Live at The Lighthouse '70 (last track CD #1). It's mistitled on an earlier pressing, but the title is correct on the new pressing. Frank Strozier also plays this tune (with Mabern) on his 1975 CD What's Goin' On. I wouldn't be surprised if Mabern also recorded 'Blues For Mr. Tatum' elsewhere. Tom Lord anyone? Bertrand.
  3. Be-bop, Make sure Kenny G-spot is not beating up his girlfriend in the hotel room. Bertrand.
  4. 'While some casual listeners might recoil at the details of Yanni's personal life, hard core fans understand all too well that this sort of thing is standard fare for the sex, drugs, and scented candles lifestyle of a new age musician. The gallons of Pinot Noir before each gig, the lines of coke snorted off a druid's ass, the underage sex slaves- Yanni doesn't just write filthy lyrics about everlasting love and natural harmony, he lives them.' Priceless! Bertrand.
  5. Man, I would have used that opportunity to curse him out a storm! Bertrand.
  6. 'Couldn't It Be You?' is credited to Blakey and McLean, 'Fidel' to McLean alone. The only copyright deposit I found is for 'Fidel'. Peter, a list of such retitlings would require a web page unto itself. Often, it is done for publishing purposes. A composer will deposit a piece with a publisher he has already deposited with another publisher under another title. Bertrand.
  7. Is the Fresh Sound CD remastered at the right speed/pitch? Does Teddy Charles really talk that way? Bertrand.

Something came up, and I'm going to hold off on getting involved in this for a while at least. I've shared all the info I have with the 'powers that be', so there's not much more I can do. Bertrand.

Hmmm... The plot thickens. If there was no organ at the 'fishing cat', then where was the 'Zoltan' I have recorded? Perhaps I need to ask Andre Francis. I know he retired. He is still living, correct? Jim, I don't think Nathan Davis knows the last name of this Michel, at least from what I am reading. Bertrand.
  10. Trombone summit? How are people going to get their pizza delivery that week-end Seriously, I will try my best to be there. I'm at the hall tonight for a Horace Silver tribute. Is your hit really at 8:15? Then I will have time to go home and get my car. What are you doing the next day? Bertrand.

Brownie, There is an interview in Jazz magazine by Maurice-Louis Blanc (did you know him?) and he also claims he taped this band during the gig. There is a photo in this article (or another article I have) where Larry is on organ. Did they ever play another club, or did they squeeze in an organ eventually? I do have a 19-minute performance (bad audio, great music) of 'Zoltan' (it's definitely Woody and Larry, and probably Davis and Brooks). This seems to be a radio broadcast, since Andre Francis pops in at the end and hilariously identifies the tune as 'Scotch Blues'. Again, Larry is on organ. I have already started some inquiries into finding these tapes. We have already hit one snag: we thought we knew who Michel(le) was, but it's not who we thought it was. Brownie, any suggestions other than our mutual friend Michel who worked for Sony but not Pathe-Marconi? If these tapes exist, we will find them. I don't think anyone will have any objection to their release; obviously not Nathan Davis. Bertrand.
  12. It's also my son Matthew's 6th birthday. I'm glad he shares a birthday with the best jazz forum on the web. Bertrand.
  13. Sorry to post this so late. My friend Harold Summey (winner of the 1992 Monk drum competition) is doing a Horace Silver retrospective at Fort Myer. Should be a great gig; I'll be there. It's a quintet featuring the amazing Kenny Rittenhouse on trumpet. Don't know why this site says 'saxophone'; the leader is a drummer. http://www.usarmyband.com/event-calendar.html Send me a PM if you think you might go - we can hook up. Bertrand.
  14. Mark Masters and his octet did a kick-ass version of "Our Man Higgins' at the gig in Claremont, CA on 1/30. I hope this sees the light of day eventually. I'll keep you posted. Bertrand.
  15. I corrected a typo to make my posting comprehensible, not that it seems to have stopped Jim On the topic of Dewey Redman (and off the topic of Ray Charles), was anyone ever able to get a copy of his gig at UNC with the student orchestra a couple of years ago? I saw this mentioned on the web. Apparently it's so-so (not enough Dewey, too much students), but I still want to buy a copy, as it's Dewey's only recording in a while, other than the thing with Arthur Blythe which is still not scheduled for release. Sorry to bootleg the thread. Back to brother Ray. Bertrand.
  16. A couple of good reviews and there you go, the guys start acting like prima donnas. Next thing you know, you'll refuse to do a Downbeat cover shoot because you have a zit. Musicians, I swear. Bertrand.
  17. Yanni needs to learn to chill. Perhaps listen to some of that 'new age' music. I hear it's very relaxing. Bertrand.
  18. Thanks. I thought I heard that story when I was out in California, but I was mistaken (Horace was discussed). I read it right here! I wonder why Allen phrased his question in such an obscure way. Just ask already. Now the guy has no clue what he was talking about. Bertrand.

    Larry Young

(I did a search on Larry Young going back 6 months before posting this, so don't shoot me). Something caught my eye in this month's DB (page 18). January 23 was Larry Young day in Jersey. There will also be a festival on Memorial day in Atlantic City (?!?), and there is a new website which seems to have been started by his son (larryyoungmusic.com). Add to that this article which I was made aware of a little while back: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=16789 Enough news to keep any Larry Young fan happy for a while. Bertrand.
  20. Lon, You say you know a label rep for Tuff City? Elsewhere, Jim had posted a thread concerning a Dewey Redman LP on this label called 'Jazz Horns for DJs' or something like that. Could you ask your friend how we could score a copy of this? Thanks, Bertrand.
  21. I'm with Soul Stream on this. So he posted a thread on a topic already discussed elsewhere? BFD. Guy, What $2 are you alluding to? I know a story involving Horace and $2, but I don't see where it is mentioned. It's a great story. Bertrand.
  22. Ok, that's the same e-mail I have. He actually lists the boots!!! What a cool guy. Bertrand.
  23. This session also sounds muddy in the Mosaic box. You take what you can get... Bertrand.
  24. I was just teasing you, or course. I hope you realized that. I have an e-mail address for him, so I was going to use that. I don't quite see the contact info on the web page... Bertrand.
  25. Thanks for posting Erskine's contact info. I need to write to him about something. Bertrand.
