Has any non-musician influenced the way we listen to an entire musical genre more. A true original -- you will be missed, Rudy.

I will miss him terribly. Redefined the vibes in jazz on countless classic recordings in the 60s (and 70s in my admittedly biased view). I went to Lincoln Center last year to attend a Hutch tribute concert from my home in MD only to find out that because of his failing health, Bobby couldn't attend. However, at the end of the show he Skyped in from his home in CA and sang a few verses of "I'll Be Seeing You" that brought tears to my eyes. Boy has 2016 been a year for losing great musicians. Heaven just got a hell of a vibes player.

JS, When I wrote that, I also didn't appreciate the potential double meaning! -
DTMG is selling a whole bunch of these compilation sets (i.e. Horace Silver Complete 1952-62, Mal Waldron Complete 57-59) that appear to be label-independent for about $4-5/disc. Seems shady to me. Anyone know anything about these?

Peter, Don't mean to burst your bubble but many titles have sat on that list for years. Not saying it's not going to happen by any means; just saying that it might not be as imminent as any of us would like. -

Scott, You'll have to write about your impressions of the Alesis once you break them out (and in, I suppose). I'm itching to play again and our home will only accommodate a small electronic kit.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/CECIL-TAYLOR-TONY-OXLEY-Ailanthus-Altissima-LIMITED-2-LP-book-/251243681374 Someone should inform this dude that there's this thing called the internet where people can actually easily search to see where this item can be found and for how much. Then again, given some of the prices I've seen people pay for things that were still in print, I shouldn't be surprised. And I wholeheartedly agree with Joe -- where the money is going definitely affects my feelings about cost and willingness to pay.

Dirtbag -- nothing lower in our society than those that prey on those that are among our most helpless: the elderly, the frail, children, etc. This guy probably hasn't the faintest clue how great of a man and artist the gentleman he tried to swindle is.

Wow, Michael -- that was some quartet! Saw him once with John Scofield's great "Groove Elation" quartet (Goldings and Irwin) once with Andrew Hill and Andy McKee as part of Jim Dilts' (sadly no more) "Jazz in Cool Spaces" series. Idris -- your impeccable sense of time, funkiness and unadultered joy will be missed!
