  2. One of our board members drew mine (apologies for forgetting) in response to a thread I started, which was an apology for what I thought was a pretty tacky thread I'd started earlier. I like it because that's the way I hope to come across to others: forgiving, accepting, and inviting. It also ties in with my favorite verse from Scripture, Matthew 11:28-29, the "come to Me all you who are weary" verse. Which was ironic, as the artist later pointed out to me that he was an atheist. Oh well..... I still like it.
  3. In the Melvin Sparks thread, a lot of the recommendations of recent records seem to be on Savant Records (a division of Highnote?). I checked their website, and found a lot of the recent greeeeaze (Sparks, Charles Earland, Reuben Wilson, etc) is being released by Savant. I have nothing released by these artists on this label, so what do y'all think? It seems like a throwback to the late-60's era Prestige when organ-jazz dominated their roster and releases.

    Melvin Sparks

Man, I've been listening to clips of Melvin Sparks all morning: solo stuff, stuff with Reuben Wilson, Ron Levy, etc. and I am HOOKED!!!! Some titles on the immediate short-list: Fun House - Reuben Wilson I'm a Gittar Player - Melvin Sparks It Is What It Is - Melvin Sparks This is It! - Melvin Sparks Legends of Acid Jazz - Melvin Sparks Greaze is What's Good - Ron Levy Where's the best place to acquire these? They're pretty pricey at Amazon, and I'd rather get 'em new.... y'know, supporting the artist & all that. I especially love it when Idris Muhammad is on board to keep the greeeeaze flowin'! More recs, please!!!!

    Melvin Sparks

Very nice indeed! Thanks for the heads-up! I love Sparks! He very definitely lives up to his name! The two recordings that spring to mind are Reuben Wilson's BLUE MODE and Red Holloway/Plas Johnson's KEEP THAT GROOVE GOING. His sound doesn't seem to have changed much over the years, and ain't nothing wrong with that! The man knows how to grooooooooove!!!
  6. OH MY LORD!!!!! I remember watching this when it was first broadcast! and thinking how COOL it was! Oh the shame of it!
  7. Don't know much about him, but I sure love his playing on a couple of lovely albums: Peter Leitch Colours and Dimensions Sonny Fortune From Now On RIP
  8. AUUUUUUGHHHHH!!!!!
  9. Would you believe I never knew that song was Aldo Nova? Every time I hear that on the classic rock station, I turn it off because I thought it was either Loverboy or Bon Jovi. Can ya blame a guy for being confused? So now that you know, you'll be rockin' out to it, right? We could have Jim change your name to "Big Aldo Nova"! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
  10. This one has always been a favorite of mine. I guess the word that comes to mind is "lilting." This music just makes me feel like I'm floating thru the air like a leaf falling from a tree in autumn. Favorite track is "Baseball Theme," but they're all good. Love the fadeouts of "Oh, Good Grief" and "Pebble Beach." Funny thing is, where A Charlie Brown Christmas is very obviously a winter-time album, A Boy Named Charlie Brown feels like a late-summer early-autumn album. I need to listen to this again!
  11. Man, some pretty harsh comments about this. To each his own I guess. This is one of my favorite Baker albums. I love everyone's playing: Baker sounds confident and forceful throughout, Griffin comes out swinging and never lets up, Haig comps and solos as beautifully as I've ever heard, Chambers and PJJ are Chambers and PJJ, and I'd rather hear them on a bad day than some others at the top of their game.
  12. I wonder how many other teams in either league wish they could be in the AL West? Some teams that are 5+ games out of first in their own divisions would be sitting alone atop the AL Worst!
  13. Hey! I may be dumb, but I'm not STUPID!
  14. That Elvis '56 looks like the one to get. Dad's pretty much a singles guy, and one disc oughta do the trick for him. Thanks again, guys!
  15. Believe me, I could easily start a "Dumb Question of the Day" thread for the rest of my life!
  16. What on EARTH are you TALKING about? Dumb questions around here?
  17. My dad got a car with a CD player in it, so now he can't listen to all the tapes he has. I'm trying to help him out by making CDs of his old albums (or albums that I've upgraded to CD), but I have absolutely no Elvis in my collection. Now, my dad loves Elvis, but really only the period from 1955-60. I realize Elvis' discography is a nightmare, so I was hoping some of y'all might know of a good Elvis comp that's readily available that covers that period. Thanks!
  18. Original New York Blue Note LP's were pressed by a company named Plastilyte. The ear symbol on the runoff groove area indicates that this is a Plastilyte pressing. Thanks!
  19. While looking at LPs on eBay, I notice some of them say "mono w/ ear." What does "ear" mean?
  20. Lately been spinning MONK & COLTRANE AT CARNEGIE HALL and wondering what took me so long to purchase it....
  21. Can I humbly request one of our US participants to forward a copy to me? PM me for my address. Thanks!
  22. Some friends of ours saw this movie and reported that it was a very uplifting movie. You've just given me two more reasons to see this picture!
  23. I must not've posted much since October; doesn't look like my post count was affected all that much!
  24. That stuff that Ben Dixon pulls on "Each Time" is flabbergasting!!! One arm's doin' one thing in 4/4, the other arm's pulling it along at 3/4, and the left foot's also playing 4/4 but with a different edge! WOW!!!!!
  25. Personally, I'd love to see a 2-fer containing that and Harold Vick's STEPPIN' OUT, since the both have the same lineup and groooooooove!!!
